Those who work with large tables are faced with a situation where there is a lot of data and they have to use a scroll bar, while the table header and the first columns naturally disappear from view. Then, in order to understand where this data belongs, you crawl back to the origins, while your eyes lose sight of either a line or a column, which is a little annoying. There are several solutions to help with this problem, the most common is to freeze a pane in Excel so that some data is always visible no matter how far you scroll in your spreadsheet. An alternative way is to work in Excel in different windows with their own scroll bar.
Freeze an area
When you freeze panes, the Excel window is divided into two parts, a corner and a rectangle:
In this case, the options may be:
- The fixed area is the first line. In this case, all columns will scroll.
- The fixed area is the first column. All lines will scroll accordingly.
- Combined option. I have the most common option, I usually fix the top line and the first few columns.

At the same time, in order to select a combined option, you must first select the cell that is located in the corner of the moving area; it is highlighted in red in my picture.
Split window
The second method is window splitting. In this case, the entire program window is divided into four parts, each with its own scroll bar, although not entirely independent. For example, the top left window can have different columns from the top right window, but must have the same rows. Accordingly, they may have different lines with the lower left, but the same columns. 
But in the end, you will be able to work in an Excel document in different windows.
The instructions are simple - you need to select the cell whose upper left corner is the boundary between areas and execute the command View/Window/Split

First row and column

Button "...top line" will allow you to fix the row numbered “1”. As a result, when scrolling through the data, it will always remain visible.
Please note that such rows and columns will be underlined in the table with a black line.
If you select "...first column", then when you scroll the sheet to the right or left, column “A” will always remain in place.
In this case, this is not suitable, since the first column is located under the letter “C”, and the required line is numbered “3”.
Required row
In order to attach a header to an Excel table, which is located in an arbitrary place on the sheet, we will do the following. We select the row that is located immediately under the header, in our case it is 4. You can read a detailed article about selection methods. Now click on the button "To fix areas" and select the item of the same name from the drop-down menu.
As you can see, when scrolling through the table, the pinned header remains in place.
Required column
In order to fix the first column for the entered data, which is not in A, select the adjacent one - in the example it is D. Now click on the button "To fix areas".
You can make sure that when you swipe to the right, C stays in place.
Fast way
To anchor the first column and row in a table, select the cell that is immediately below their intersection: in the example, D4. Then click on the button we are already familiar with. Horizontal lines will appear to indicate the locked area.
How to delete
If you need to delete a frozen area in Excel, click the button "To fix areas". In the drop-down list you will see that now at the very top there is “Unlock…”, click on it.
As you can see, freezing the desired area in Excel is quite simple. Using these recommendations, you can fix the table header, its first row or column.

Note. This method of freezing rows is relevant for Excel versions 2007 and 2010. In earlier versions (2003 and 2000), the Freeze Panes tool is located in the Window menu on the main page. And there you must ALWAYS activate the cell UNDER the fixed row.

To freeze multiple columns, you need to select the cell at the VERY BOTTOM of the table to the RIGHT of the column you are freezing. And click the “Freeze areas” button.
How to freeze a row and a column at the same time
Task: When scrolling, fix the selected area, which contains two columns and two rows.
We make the active cell at the intersection of the fixed rows and columns. But not in the pinned area itself. It should be immediately below the required rows and to the right of the required columns.
In the drop-down menu of the “Freeze Areas” tool, select the first option.

How to remove a frozen area in Excel
After freezing a table row or column, the “Unfreeze Regions” button becomes available in the “Freeze Regions” menu.

Note. The Excel 2003 and 2000 Unfreeze Panes button is located in the Window menu. If you use tool buttons frequently, you can add them to the Quick Access Toolbar. To do this, right-click and select the proposed option.

How to fix the desired range in Excel?
Before fixing certain fields on the worksheet, you need to know some nuances:
- You can only mark those lines or columns that are located at the top and left, respectively. If they are located in the middle of the worksheet, then this condition cannot be applied to them.
- The procedure will not be available if the sheet is protected or the cell editing mode is used (to exit this mode, just press the “Esc” or “Enter” key).
In general, in Excel you can fix the left column or the top line. If you need to specify both a column and a row, then you need to do this at the same time. If you first mark, for example, only column A, and then the first row, then column A will no longer be fixed.
How to freeze a column or row in Excel 2003?
Fixing fields in different versions of Excel is done approximately according to the same principle, but still the process is slightly different. The first example will be based on the 2003 version. Now, when scrolling the table in any direction, the specified fields will always be at the top of the document (they will be underlined with black lines at the bottom and right).
If necessary, you need to specify the “Unlock” option in the “Window” item, and then mark the new cells. If you need to completely unfreeze the rows and columns, then you need to check the “Unsplit” option.
There is another, simpler way to solve this problem. In this case, you just need to click on the cell located below and to the right of the range that should always appear at the top of the document. And then you need to select the “Pin” command. For example, if you want to mark the first 3 columns (A, B, C) and the first 2 rows, then to fix it you will need to select field D4 and click on the above command.
How to fix a range in Excel 2007 and 2010?

Fixing a column occurs in the same way; you just need to specify the appropriate option in the list. To mark several columns, you need to click on the name of the column, which is located to the right of the desired area, and select the “Freeze area” command.
Fixing an area is carried out in exactly the same way as in Excel 2003. That is, you need to click on a specific field located below and to the right of the range, which should always be displayed at the top of the program worksheet.
After freezing the cells, another option will appear in the list - “Unfreeze”. It is this item that must be selected if for some reason you need to disable this option.
