Which iPhones support iOS 11

Where Apple CEO Tim Cook talked about the innovations and features of the new iOS 11. Let’s briefly talk about the most interesting ones.

The voice assistant update brings support for translating phrases into multiple languages, including English, French, German, Italian, Spanish and Chinese. The feature is still in beta. Thanks to machine learning, Siri's voice now sounds more natural.

Siri has learned to answer follow-up questions - something that Google Assistant has been able to do for a long time. That is, the voice assistant can now handle more complex multi-level questions. The new Intelligence feature allows Siri to tailor content based on the user's interests. This can be either news or current affairs and tasks. According to the developers, Siri is trained, the data is synchronized with other Apple devices, but remains private, accessible only to the user.

Multi-window mode on iPhone in iOS 11

Any smartphone running Android 7.0 Nougat supports split screen, while Apple has made the Split Screen feature unique to the iPad. The iPhone has a sufficient amount of RAM, a powerful processor, and a large screen, so there is absolutely nothing stopping you from introducing multi-window mode on smartphones.

No support for 32-bit applications on iOS 11

Apple began releasing 64-bit gadgets three years ago, but the advantage of the new processor architecture is only relevant if software developers support it. At the beginning of 2015, Cupertino obliged software creators to switch to 64 bits. To nudge developers, Apple added a special warning in iOS 10.1 about device slowdown that appears when running 32-bit programs. In iOS 11, the company intends to completely abandon support for applications written in 32 bits.

iMessage

The first and perhaps the most significant change in the current update is the synchronization of messages in iMessage between the iOS and macOS platforms. Now, if you delete messages on your iPhone or iPad, the changes will affect your Mac too. Synchronization is carried out thanks to the iCloud cloud platform.

In addition, iMessage has received integration with the Apple Pay service, which allows you to send and receive payments between users. Transfers will be made to a special Apple Pay Cash Card, where the user's funds are stored. Transferring from card to card is supported on iPhone, iPad and Apple Watch. In the future, the money can be transferred to an account in any bank.

Control Center, Lock Screen, Maps, App Store and more

In iOS 11, Apple has completely redesigned the control panel and redesigned the lock screen interface, which now houses the most important system settings and applications.

The App Store is also getting its biggest ever update. Games and apps are now divided into two separate categories. A “Today” tab has appeared, where the most significant releases appear.

Other changes in iOS 11 include support for augmented reality (AR) and the H.265 video codec, screen recording, one-handed text editing mode, live photos in FaceTime, automatic import of passwords in applications, AirPlay 2, new social functions in Apple Music and other.

Group video calls FaceTime

In the new mobile OS, Apple plans to introduce a group video calling feature for the FaceTime video communication service. At the moment, this service is not available to iPhone and iPad users; Cupertino plans to expand the capabilities of the proprietary service with the release of iOS 11.

Group video calls should appear in FaceTime 7 years after the launch of the service. Nowadays free VoIP calls to anywhere in the world are commonplace, but in 2010 it was a real revelation. The new FaceTime feature will allow you to make video calls with up to 5 users at the same time, the currently speaking interlocutor will be displayed in the center of the screen.

Black theme

This is perhaps the most desired and anticipated innovation of iOS 11. Dark theme. Last September, Apple introduced black iPhone 7s, which would be ideally suited to a dark interface. At the moment, most branded apps have a white background, but what's stopping you from making it black in the App Store, Apple Music or Messages?

When will iOS 11 be released, release date

Beta iOS 11 is already available for developers, the final release of iOS 11 will take place in the fall - three months after the start of testing. The release of a new OS is usually timed to coincide with the release of the new generation iPhone.

What devices will iOS 11 support?

The following Apple devices will support the new version of the OS:

    • iPhone 5s and later;
    • iPad Pro and iPad Air (all models);
    • iPad 5;
    • iPad mini and later;
    • iPod touch 6.

The annual release of new software has not been canceled. This summer, Apple will present a new platform for mobile devices, but not everyone will be able to download and install it! Device compatibility next!

The release of iOS 11 will take place, as always, as part of the World International Conference, which starts on June 5. The Cook Corporation has already officially announced the date and location of the event, so we can fully count on the possibility of installing iOS 11 on June 5th. However, the firmware will initially be available only to registered developers.

List of devices supporting iOS 11

With the advent of each update, the functionality on mobile devices expands, but the list of supported devices invariably shrinks. And in the case of iOS 11 there will be no exceptions. Not all current devices will be compatible with iOS 11. Thus, iPhone 5, iPhone 5c, iPad mini 2, iPad 4 and iPod touch 6G are not supported. The reason is an outdated version of the processor, which simply will not support the new functionality.

  • iPhone 5s
  • iPhone SE
  • iPhone 6
  • iPhone 6 Plus
  • iPhone 6s
  • iPhone 6s Plus
  • iPhone 7
  • iPhone 7 Plus
  • iPhone 8
  • iPad Air
  • iPad Air 2
  • iPad Pro 12.9
  • iPad Pro 9.7
  • iPad mini 3
  • iPad mini 4

Of course, one could expect that Cupertino would release some kind of stripped-down version of the firmware for these devices. But there’s no point in engineers spending time on this when it’s easier to captivate customers with new devices and their advanced capabilities. After all, you can put much more in your pocket...

At the moment it is unknown what changes will be in the new firmware. There are quite a few leaks, and perhaps the time for their appearance has not yet come. It's unlikely that you should expect anything fresh in design. The emphasis will be on the functional side of the firmware and improving the software.
Traditionally, after the release of the version for developers, the firmware will be available for public testing participants after some time. The final release of iOS 11 will take place in the fall. We wait! Along with the official firmware will be available

iOS 11 review

The new iOS 11 was presented to the public in June of this year. A full-fledged version of the system has replaced iOS 10. Let's take a closer look at the new iOS 11: date and supported devices.

On June 5, the world-famous WWDC conference was held in San Jose (California), at which Tim Cook and leading Apple developers presented the new iOS 11 to the world. All new functions and features of the system were also described at the event.

A few hours after the developer conference, a beta version of the new operating system became available to iPhone and iPad users.

Gadget support

Tim Cook was expected to confirm the end of support for the fifth series of smartphones. And so it happened, iPhone 5 and iPhone 5c do not support the new system.

Supported Devices:

  • iPhone 6;
  • iPhone 6 Plus;
  • iPad Air (both generations);
  • iPod touch 6G;
  • The entire iPhone 7 line;
  • iPad (9.7, 12.9 and 10.5 inch gadgets only);
  • iPad mini (2, 3, 4 generations).

Installing the new iOS 11

You can install a new operating system only if your device is on the list of supported gadgets and does not have a jailbreak installed. To install IOS 11, the latest official version of the system must be installed on your smartphone – IOS 10.3.

You can download the update in two ways:

  • "by air". All you need is a smartphone or tablet and a fast Internet connection;
  • Using iTunes. Requires a wired connection between the phone and PC, as well as Internet access from the computer.

Let's take a closer look at how to install iOS 11. To update to iOS 11 over the air, go to your smartphone's settings. Open the “Basic” tab and click on the “Profile” item. Then check your connection to the global network and press the “Install updates” button. The phone will be turned off, and then the installation procedure for the new OS will begin.

To install iOS 11 using iTunes, connect your mobile gadget to your computer and wait for it to be identified by iTunes. Then, in the main application window, click on the “Update” button and wait until the installation of the beta version of the new system from Apple is completed.

What's new?

Best features of iOS 11:

  • New design;
  • The Drag and Drop function has been introduced to quickly move elements by dragging them;
  • New tabs for apps and games have been added to the App Store. Also, the store interface has been completely updated;
  • All messages from iMessage are stored in the cloud so as not to clutter up the internal memory of the device;
  • There is a function to send money using iMessage or using Apple Pay;
  • Document scanning function;
  • Updated animation;
  • One-handed typing mode.

More new system features are described on apple.com

5 problems with iOS 11

In the first days after the public distribution of the OS, users noted several negative qualities in the design and functionality of the system:

  • Control Center design. This system window has undergone changes. The developers added more icons and did not finalize the final appearance of the options;

  • The 3D Touch App switcher is no longer available on iOS. Now users cannot quickly access the latest open applications;
  • Problems with the Drag and Drop function. This option has become a long-awaited new product, however, its operation is not yet stable enough. While dragging explorer elements, an error often appears;
  • Cluttered Notification Center. Users note that in future versions it would be better to separate notifications into groups and individual programs.

Overall, the new iOS 11 has a clear and functional design, and new features promise to make working with the gadget even simpler and more interesting.

In this article I will describe in detail the process of fully flashing iPad, iPhone, iPod Touch to the latest version of the operating system iOS 11. The process is briefly described in the article Firmware iPad, but here I have made it even more detailed with the most current screenshots from the moment you decided to flash it to the fully installed system. Plus, here in the comments you can ask questions about firmware for iOS 11, solve problems that arise, etc. We will try to help everyone in the comments.

You can always update via Settings->General->Software Update . This article describes exactly the flashing of the device, which the user may need for one reason or another.

So, you've made up your mind. Believe me, there is nothing complicated about this. Please note that this instruction is relevant for iPad, iPhone and iPod Touch. All actions are absolutely the same.

Step 0: Prepare the iPad

Make sure your device meets the requirements iOS 11.

All models supported except:

  • the long-outdated iPad 1, for which iOS 5.1.1 will remain the final version.
  • iPad 2, iPad 3, iPad Mini 1, iPhone 4S, iPod Touch 5G – for them the final version will forever remain iOS 9 (currently the most current iOS 9.3.5)
  • iPhone 5, 5C, iPad 4 (currently the most current iOS 10.3.3)

iOS 11 support:

  • iPad Air, iPad Air 2, iPad Pro 12.9, iPad Pro 9.7
  • iPad mini 2, iPad mini 3, iPad mini 4
  • iPhone 5S, iPhone 6, iPhone 6 Plus, iPhone 6S, iPhone 6S Plus, iPhone SE, iPhone 7, iPhone 7 Plus
  • iPod Touch 6G

Attention! If you have a flashing iPad now on iOS 7, iOS 8, iOS 9, iOS 10 then it is necessary temporarily Disable Find My iPad. Without disabling the firmware will not take place.

Settings->Click on your account at the top->iCloud->Find iPad.

Need to turn it off. The system will ask for your Apple ID password. Don't forget to turn the function back on after updating the firmware.

Step 1: Update iTunes

Update iTunes to the latest version available. You can do this directly from the iTunes menu. Or download it from the official page on the Apple website.

For those who need it, here are instructions for beginners: How to install iTunes on Windows. On Apple computers, iTunes is included in the operating system.

The current version of iTunes is 12.6.2.20! (or higher)

Step 2. Creating a Backup

You can skip this step if you don't have any valuable data on your iPad: documents in apps, saves in games, apps that are no longer in the App Store. This is extremely rare, so let's start with backup. Just in case, I will briefly explain the process.

a) Connect the iPad to iTunes. We are waiting for the iPad to be detected in iTunes. And we poke at it.

We wait until iTunes completes all manipulations.

b) You can also create a backup in iCloud without using a computer. In iOS 10 the path looks like this: Settings->[Your name]->iCloud->iCloud Backup->Backup.

In an older version of iOS: Settings->iCloud->iCloud Backup->Create Backup

Backup copy- your guarantee that you will not later ask questions like: “Where did my notes go!?” Don't ignore this step! Before a global flashing, I always make a copy immediately both on my computer and in iCloud.

I prefer to restore from a computer backup, because such restoration occurs faster than from the cloud. Difference between local backup and iCloud.

Step 3. Downloading iOS 11 firmware

From September 19th. Download current firmware from our special article (iOS 11 is already available). Bookmark this article - links to the latest firmware always appear there promptly. :)

Step 4. Flash iPad to iOS 11

When the firmware file is downloaded, open iTunes. Hold Shift if you have Windows (Alt-Option for MacOS) on your keyboard and click the “Restore” button.

The following message will appear:

Press the button Restore. The firmware process has begun. At this moment, it is better not to touch the computer and iPad.

The iPad or iPhone screen will display something like this:

Step 5. Setting up iPad/iPhone

After the firmware is installed, the iPad/iPhone setup begins. Press the Home button.

If you have an iPad with an LTE/3G module, it will offer to unlock the SIM card. Click Unlock and enter the PIN code for the SIM card.

Welcome screen in several languages. You need to press the Home button (before iOS 9 you had to swipe to the right).

Choose a language. The Russian will most likely be at the very top.

After that Absolute new feature of iOS 11 ! The device offers to bring another device on iOS 11 to automatically configure other settings. We do this and or continue to configure manually.

Next, you need to go through the procedure of creating a login password. Starting with iOS 9, you can choose a 6-digit password (I recommend choosing this for security). If you want to choose a non-standard four-digit password, then click “Passcode Options”. You can change your password settings in the future. I don’t recommend leaving your iPad without a password at all!

  • Recover from iCloud copy. If you made a copy in iCloud before flashing the firmware, you can select this option for recovery. The downside is the longest operation time due to the fact that applications will essentially be restored from the Internet.
  • Recover from an iTunes copy. If you made a backup copy on your computer before installing the firmware, you can select this item. The most optimal recovery method in terms of speed and reliability.
  • Set up like a new iPad. If you want to start from scratch. You will receive an iPad the same as you would buy in a store, only with new firmware. This option is also convenient for those who want to see how the device works with a clean operating system.
  • Transfer data from Android. In iOS 10-11, Apple developers have simplified the transition from Android to iOS. All you need is a special utility, Move To iOS, which will help you do everything.

We will consider the third option. After selecting “Set up as a new iPad,” the user is prompted to enter their Apple ID.

A window will appear with a six-digit number that must be entered on the device being configured.

If you have only one iPhone and two-factor identification is configured, the system will offer to send an SMS.

After briefly setting up your Apple ID, you will need to accept Apple's rules.

Express settings appear.

If you want to configure the settings, click the appropriate link.

We choose whether to use the Siri voice assistant or not. Everything you need to know about Siri. Now Siri supports the Russian language, so I don’t see any point in refusing.

Finally, you will see a prompt to get started:

The main desktop in iOS 11 looks like this:

Answers to questions about firmware

I tried to compose questions and answers based on the problems that I have ever had with the firmware...

What should I do if I flashed it and selected “Set up as a new iPad”, but I have a backup copy?

If you've already set up your device, you can reset it to go through the iOS Setup Assistant process again. Select Settings->General->Reset->Erase content and settings. Because this action will delete all existing content from the device, perform this step only if you have already backed up your data.

After the reset, the system will ask you again whether to download a backup copy.

iTunes crashes during firmware update on iOS 11?

This happened to me once, although in theory it shouldn’t happen. Update iTunes to the latest version.

Is your iPad freezing at some point during the initial iOS 11 setup?

If your iPad freezes during setup, I recommend holding down Home+Power for a few seconds. The iPad will reboot and the setup process will begin either again or from the place where it was stuck. Skip the item you were stuck on (for example, setting up iCloud). Everything can be configured later in the operating system itself.

Are the instructions suitable for iPhone?

Yes, and also for the iPod Touch... At the beginning of the article I indicated all the devices for which this instruction is relevant. Some points may change, but not significantly.

Continuing the topic:
Internet

Often, users of smartphones based on Windows Phone, in particular Lumia (formerly Nokia Lumia), have a question about how to set up the Internet on these devices. The interface of these...
