Continuation of the best role-playing game of 2009 from the authors of Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic and the Mass Effect series.
In a new journey through the fantasy world of Dragon Age, full of secrets and dangers, the player will play the role of a simple refugee named Hawk, trying with all his might to protect his family from the inexorable Blight. As fate would have it, he will become the main defender of the city of Kirkwall.
The plot covers an entire decade in the history of a harsh world, whose inhabitants desperately resist the invasion of the creatures of darkness. The player will have to make difficult decisions, enter into mutually beneficial alliances with rather dangerous individuals, gain wealth and fame, and, of course, tirelessly fight numerous enemies with sword and magic.
How the story will develop, which will forever change the Dragon Age universe, depends only on the player.

Game plot

The events of the game take place over 10 years in parallel and after the events of the first part - Inception. The main character is a man named Hawke, who, fleeing the Blight, flees with his family from Lothering to the Free March, where he becomes the Defender of Kirkwall. The story is narrated by Hawke's friend, the dwarf Varric, who is interrogated by Inquisitor Cassandra, who is clearly interested in some events from Hawke's life. In the dwarf's story, we learn how Hawk became a hero, the Protector. We have to stop the slave trade, fight the Qunari and resolve the conflict between magicians and templars.

Playing as Hawke, we visit such famous places of the Dragon Age world as the Free March, the outskirts of Lothering, and the Deep Roads.

Actually, the action of the game consists of a prologue showing the escape from Lothering and arrival in Kirkwall, and three acts, each of which describes Hawke's life in Kirkwall. Many storylines and quest chains run through all three parts.

The first part takes place a year after arrival and describes the preparations for the expedition to the Deep Roads and the expedition itself. Here Hawk meets all his companions. The second part takes place three years after the first and describes the conflict with the Qunari. In the third part, Hawk, who received the title of Defender of the City, participates in the conflict between the magicians and templars of Kirkwall. The action takes place another three years later (or seven years after arriving in Kirkwall).

Events of Dragon Age: Origins

The game allows you to load saved files from the first part. If they are not there, then the player is given a choice of three options for those events:

  1. The human guard makes Alistair king of Ferelden and personally kills the Archdemon, but remains alive. This is the default option.
  2. The young Dalish convinces Alistair to rule with Anora and dies heroically, killing the Archdemon.
  3. The gnome guard drives Alistair away and sends Loghain to kill the Archdemon, knowing that this is certain death.

Since Dragon Age II takes place in a completely different part of Thedas, the events of the first part do not greatly affect the main plot .

But what to do with classic RPGs, for which both parts take the rap? Dragon Age, they themselves don’t seem to know. That's why BioWare throws it back and forth, starting from a three-hour introduction in the first part and ending with direct borrowings from Mass Effect in the second. Dragon's Blood

The monumental core of Dragon Age remains intact: it's still the same hardcore RPG it was a year and a half ago. But with some important changes. One of the most significant is the threefold increase in the pace of battles. What happens on the screen during the brawl can very easily be confused with some kind of slasher film. After giving an order, magicians no longer stir the air with their hands while preparing a spell, but immediately unleash thunder and lightning on the battlefield, simultaneously releasing fireballs from their staves at machine-gun speed. The warriors swing their huge cutlasses with all their might and literally tear their unfortunate opponents to bloody pieces. Here you can even dodge a blow by jumping to a safe distance in time, which in classic RPGs is equivalent to blasphemy.

Many battles with ordinary enemies quickly end in your favor without any serious brain activity - you just need to configure the behavior of your fellow party members in a special menu, as in the first Dragon Age. But even here, an unpretentious player can choose one of the tactical schemes prepared in advance by the developers - they are not ideal, but they are quite workable.

However, don't think that Dragon Age 2 has become too easy and boring: there are enough battles (mostly outside the main storyline) in which to win you have to carefully monitor the progress of the battle and use the strengths of each class. Unique combo attacks play a huge role. For example, a warrior knocks down an enemy with a blow from his shield, and a magician fries him with lightning, the description of which includes the terrifying figure “800% attack against stunned targets.”

As a result of such reforms, Canadians managed to find a balance between complexity and excitement, at the same time adding dynamics to the battles that were so lacking before. You no longer shake like a leaf, knowing that even a pathetic gang of road robbers, with the slightest miscalculation, can cut up your elite, pumped-up party like a pack of stray dogs. In Dragon Age 2, your team will crash into this gang at full speed and, without much hassle, leave its horns and legs behind. But as soon as you come across a more serious enemy - a squad of well-trained templars, a brood of demons or an adult dragon - you have to pause the game and manually issue orders, showing your tactical genius.

Dragon hunt

Not only the battles, but also many other elements of Dragon Age 2 received a facelift. As a result, the game became more collected, more convenient and clearer. For example, you no longer need to carry hundreds of roots and pieces of iron in your pockets for crafting - just find deposits of the necessary materials and order things on the market or directly from your home for a small bribe.

The pumping system has also been “modernized”. The linear blocks of abilities that BioWare games have had since before the dinosaurs seemed to have gone extinct have given way to a much more flexible system: within each skill tree, you always have a choice of which ability to learn, and already memorized moves can be upgraded to make them stronger or stronger. adding some unique properties to them.

There are, however, ambiguous decisions. Friends no longer allow you to dress yourself in armor - at most you can change their weapons and pick up jewelry in the form of rings, amulets and belts. Only the main character can change his clothes completely. It is clear that this was done in order not to spoil the appearance of the heroes, honed by the designers, with clumsy armor - we ourselves would not have dressed, say, the pirate Isabella with such advantages in a nondescript shell. But this justification is unlikely to encourage fans of the board game “Dress Masha.”

However, this is by no means the main thing in Dragon Age - in BioWare games the plot and characters always come first, and everything else is just a background, a tool to tell an interesting story. The deeper you dive into the game, the less you care about the numbers in the characteristics of the characters and the more about their relationships with each other and with the outside world.

Shortly before release Dragon Age 2 The first humanoid robot flew to the ISS, and in role-playing games, huge interstellar metropolises are still represented by two streets, one tavern, ten residents and three lingerie merchants. Peace for the two of us

No matter how poetic and beautiful the relationship between the main characters of role-playing games is, their connection with the outside world is still very, very conditional. BioWare doesn't have it at all. In Dragon Age 2, you can kill bandits and mercenaries in front of civilians, flaunt in front of their noses in magical ceremonial vestments (and magicians are banned there), or loudly discuss your insidious plans two meters from the guards. There will be no reaction to this. Captain Shepard is not far behind: just think, he hit an annoying journalist in the jaw with all his might - what a miracle, no one even batted an eyelid. There are other extremes: if you took an apple without asking, you get a machine gun fire in your back.

First right turn

From time immemorial, developers of role-playing games (usually Japanese) have tried to weave a romantic line into the plot. Western game developers were much worse at depicting love-carrots. Then, however, CD Projekt RED came up with it The Witcher, and BioWare - Mass Effect: both had sex scenes and naked female breasts. That's when it dawned on everyone: why try to invent feelings if you can stop the camera on plastic breasts for a second? But there are no more emotions from such know-how than from watching porn: both here and there the actors perform poorly, and the plot is simple and predictable.

Election fraud

RPG is the only genre, other than puzzles, in which the characters still do not know how to plausibly express their emotions. It doesn’t matter what they do: they swear, they laugh, they kiss, they drink wine, they fight, they stab someone in the back - not a single muscle moves on the stony faces of the heroes. The characters, like talking dolls, can only say the right phrase at the right moment and, perhaps, move their hands. Of course, the developers mask the emotional helplessness of their androids by inviting great actors to do the voice acting. But in a world where there is already Heavy Rain, Uncharted: Drake's Fortune and will appear very soon L.A. Noire, this approach is similar to suicide.

Dragon wisdom

The story of Dragon Age 2 has lost its former epicness, the feeling of hopelessness and universal melancholy, but at the same time it has become much more elegant. For once, some kind of intrigue has appeared: if earlier, almost from the very beginning, you were told straight away that you need to save the world from the archdemon, now, almost until the final act, you don’t have any global goal, but there are serious suspicions, supported by mysterious half-hints, that very soon the usual way of life will go to hell.

The game begins at about the same time as the first Dragon Age: the Hawk family, shining their heels, barely manages to escape from Lothering, ravaged by evil spirits. The Hawks' ranks, thinned during the escape, cross the sea and find themselves in the port city of Kirkwall, with a rich slave history. But there are enough refugees there even without you, that’s why they don’t let anyone through the gates. Uncle Gamlen, who has long drunk away the family estate and is eking out a miserable existence in the slums, reluctantly comes to the rescue (after several days of being homeless in the port). Having greased up whoever was needed and shifted the debt burden onto your shoulders, your relative finally takes you inside the city.

From this moment begins the story of the protagonist’s rise from rags to riches, which stretches for almost eight years. You are not saving the world - the archdemon was killed long ago by the Gray Guardian from the first Dragon Age - but you are simply living in a new city, trying to arrange your life. Even your companions do not camp under the city walls, but spend their free time in their homes, where you can visit them and establish relationships in every possible way (even intimate ones, as has become fashionable now).

According to the good BioWare tradition, the attention to plot details here is simply incredible. All the characters are excellently written, each of them has their own character, their own history, their own problems, their own opinion about other companions and your actions. Half of them play a huge role in the main plot, although some reveal their cards literally an hour before the final credits.

The higher you climb the career ladder, the stronger the clouds gather, the more dirt, meanness, injustice and behind-the-scenes struggles fall on your shoulders - in general, everything that any more or less large female office team lives with every day. Throughout the game, the scriptwriters tell you stories that seem to be unrelated to each other, and in the finale they elegantly twist them into one elastic ball - then all your numerous moral choices made during the course of the story will come back to haunt you.

Dragon bile

The results of your decisions, big and small, appear even many, many hours after you make them. It depends on them in what composition you will approach the final battle, who will change their views on life, who will leave the team or even die, who will betray you, and who will follow you to the end. Moreover, all this applies not only to your companions, but also to other important personalities in Kirkwall.

Even the consequences of the smallest actions can one day surface in completely unexpected places. For example, one day our hero stumbles upon a gift for the guard Aveline, who joins the team at the very beginning of the game (the gift was the ancient personalized shield of the first female knight). But instead of thanking you, Aveline suddenly remembers that a long time ago you sold the shield of her deceased husband at the bazaar (we really sold it, like any other item from the inventory), and therefore now she is terribly offended by us. True, if you manage to conduct the conversation wisely, a scandal with breaking dishes can be avoided. What could happen in this episode if the ill-fated shield is not sold, we did not have time to check - these episodes were divided among themselves tens hours of play.

By the way, BioWare also modernized the dialogue system: the classic choice of answer options was replaced by the dialogue wheel from Mass Effect. Now you determine only the tone of the conversation: respectful, sneering or menacing. The innovation has taken root remarkably well in the fantasy world: conversations have become livelier, the character is no longer silent like a fish, but responds sharply to the interlocutor’s remarks.

The most attentive of you have probably noticed that the second option for conducting a conversation, unlike Mass Effect, is not neutral, but rather malicious, caustic, buffoonish. Since no one seems to be going to destroy the world of Dragon Age 2, the writers did not hesitate to add a pinch of humor to the barrel of dirt, betrayal and bedside intrigue. The fact that even their developers themselves are tired of the usual stoic seriousness of classic RPGs (we’ve been tired of it for a long time) is already a very good sign. The main source of tavern jokes is the dwarf Varric, on whose behalf the story is told (he tells our story to the competent authorities). This snub-nosed dwarf Casanova with a hairy chest regularly mentions the boobs of the prophetess Andraste, inserts caustic phrases into serious conversations and constantly embellishes events.

Even the tutorial is chic and humorous: Varrick begins his story, in which we, fleeing from the creatures of darkness, mow down hordes of evil spirits with a heroic face without harm to health, and suddenly at the climax a female investigator interrupts the story: “Stop, stop, this can't be! Come on, tell me how it really happened!” This is where, in fact, the normal game begins: no more heroism, and the breasts of the protagonist’s sister are reduced by a couple of sizes. Did we mention that BioWare takes the smallest details very seriously?

Dragonbane

If we forget about the details for a second and talk about the world of Dragon Age 2 as a whole, then it turned out to be even smaller than in Dragon Age: Origins. Yes, by the end of the game you will know everything about him (unless, of course, you are too lazy to find and read all kinds of notes and historical documents), but your playing space is quite limited: you will spend the entire game in Kirkwall, where there are hardly four more smaller locations, and in its surroundings, where three more will be added to them. Apart from a couple of story dungeons, all other quests (both main and side) take place in the same scenery - the developers simply “cut off” a piece from a large cave, close some passages, open others and launch you inside.

Fortunately, if you only go through the main plot and push through, the repetitive scenery will not have time to tire you: you can beat the game in 10-12 hours.

The game looks about the same as the Dead Princess after a century of sleep. The fashionable DirectX 11 was screwed onto the dying engine, but this did not make Dragon Age 2 much more beautiful. Moreover, our press version in DX11 mode, without any hesitation, produced from one to three frames per second.

There is no need to look for long reasons for such a depressing technical state of the game: Dragon Age 2 was made for only a year and a half, so all efforts were clearly thrown into the plot and characters.
