How to split a file into several parts for sending by email. How to split a file How to split a rar archive into several parts

Greetings to all readers of my blog! In today's article I will tell you , how to split a file into parts using archivers. I think that every user at least once in his life has encountered a situation where he needs to write a file of, say, 800 mb (megabytes) in size, but there is simply no suitable storage medium at hand. Or there is a CD, but, as you know, you can write a maximum of 700 mb on it.

One way out of this situation would be to use Winrar or 7-Zip archivers (archive the file by breaking it into parts), but you must understand that some file types have a minimum compression ratio. If the data is in text form, then archivers will cope with this task without any problems, significantly reducing the total amount of information. The same cannot be said about video files.

Let's imagine that we have a video of 800 mb in size. How can we burn it onto a CD? I already mentioned above that we will handle this task with archivers, and now I’ll tell you in more detail about how they can split a file into parts and then reassemble it into the original file.

This method is widely used on the Internet, when files of 100-200 mb are posted on file hosting services. So you download a large file in parts. If the Internet is lost while downloading data, then you will not need to re-download the entire file, but only the part where the Internet was lost.

Also, file hosting sites often have restrictions on downloading files, for example 200 mb. If you need to upload a video to the server, it is uploaded in parts. This method of separating files can be used in different cases.

We've learned the theory, so let's get down to practice and see how to split files into parts. I will show an example with which you can split a file into 200 mb parts, since this size is considered the most common on the Internet.

First, install any archiver (if it is not installed) that you like. You can read about how to install the archiver in my article “”.

Winrar program

Right-click on the file and select “Add to archive” from the drop-down menu.

The “Archive name and parameters” window will open, go to the “General” tab; by default in the Winrar program you should be in this tab.

Now you need to enter the size into which you want to split your file. Enter the number 209715200 in “Split into volumes of size (in bytes)” and click the “OK” button.

In new versions of Winrar, you can not enter numbers in bytes, but select unit sizes (let's say megabytes and specify the number 200).

For you to understand why I indicated the number 209715200, you need to know that there are 1024 kilobytes in one megabyte, each of which has 1024 bytes, which means that in a megabyte there are 1024 * 1024 = 1048576 bytes. To divide a file into exactly 200 megabytes, you need to specify 209715200 bytes. With these calculations you will know what number is needed to split a file of a different size.

After this, you will need to wait until the archiver splits the file. The waiting time depends entirely on the size of the source.

Please note that "part1", "part2", "part3" and "part4" have been added to the end of the file names. This means that the file has been split into 4 parts. The first file in this case is “part1”, which means the beginning of the file, and “part4” is its end.

Sometimes, pdf files are made large and for some users downloading them takes a long time. Therefore, if you have the task of transferring a pdf file, then know that you can also split the pdf file into parts using any archiver.

Archiver 7-Zip

Right-click on the file and select “7-Zip” - “Add to archive...”.

Enter the size 209715200 in “Split into volumes of size (in bytes)” and click the “OK” button. Now we wait for the process to complete.

This is how the files created by the 7-Zip archiver look like:

As you noticed, in the 7-Zip archiver file names end with “001”, etc.

If you are thinking about which archiver to choose, then feel free to click on the following link: “”

Combining separated files into one

So, you learned how to split a file into parts, but now you need to assemble these files into one. To return a file to its original state using the Winrar archiver, right-click on the first archive whose name ends with “part1.rar” and select “Extract files...”.

See you soon!

It is not uncommon for a situation to arise when you need to send a file by mail, but its size exceeds the permissible threshold. As a rule, in such situations, other methods of sending the file are used. For example, a file is uploaded to cloud storage and a link is sent with which this file can be downloaded. However, there is another way. A large file can be divided into parts and sent in several emails. In this article we will tell you how this can be done.

If you don’t know how to split a file into parts, then the first thing you need to do is download and install the archiver. In this article we will use the 7zip() archiver, but you can use WinRAR or any other that is convenient for you.

After downloading and installing the 7zip archiver, call the context menu (right-click) for the file that you want to split into parts. In the menu that opens, select “7-zip – Add to archive”.

After this, a window with archive creation settings will open in front of you.

At the bottom of this window there is a "Split into volumes" function. Using this function we can divide the file into parts of the size we need.

In order to divide the file into parts, you need to enter the size you want to receive. The size is entered in megabytes. To do this, enter the number of megabytes with the English letter “M”. For example, 5M, 10M, 15M, etc. You can leave the remaining archiving settings as default or change them as you wish. This will not affect the process of splitting the file into parts. The only note is that the archive format is best set to “zip”. This is the most popular format; using this format, you can be sure that there will be no problems opening it on another computer.

After you have entered the file size you want to receive, you can click on the “OK” button and start the archiving process.

For example, we split the file into 15 MB parts. After this, archive files appeared in the folder with the source file. The size of each file will not exceed the size you specified in the archiving settings. You can verify this by looking at the file size.

At this point, the process of dividing the file into parts can be considered complete. You can send the created archive by email, attaching one file to each email.

In order to unpack such an archive and get the original file again, you need to place all parts of the archive in one folder and use the “Unpack” function.

Using the program WinRAR. Let's now look at two more features of this program - archiving a file in parts, and creating a self-extracting archive.

Archiving a file in parts

If the file is large and it is impossible to transfer it due to size limitations of mail or a file hosting service, then you can split it into parts, more precisely, into several archives, and transfer these archives.

In the WinRAR program you can do archiving in parts. Let's do this now.

To archive files you will need WinRAR archiver installed. If you don’t have it, you can download the archiver from the link at the beginning of the article.

In the window My computer , or in the program Total Commander, right-click on the file that you want to archive in parts, and select the item in the context menu WinRAR - Add to archive . If you have an English version of the archiver, then you need to select Add to archive .

A window appears Archive name and parameters , in which you open the tab Are common, if it is not already open by default. In the English version of the archiver this tab is called General .

At the bottom, find the window under the item. In the English version the inscription will be Split to volumes, bytes .

In this window, enter the size of the parts into which your file will be divided.

For example, if you have a file of 6GB in size, and you need to split it into archives of 600 MB each, that is, into 10 archives, then enter the number 629145600 in the box, since 600 MB is equal to exactly this number of bytes: 1 MB is equal to 1024 KB, and 1KB is equal to 1024 bytes.

Now press the button OK. That's all, the file is archived and will be placed in several archives. The names of these archives will be the same as the name of the source file, with the addition of a dot ending: .part1, .part2, .part3 and so on.

You can safely transfer these archives, or keep them for yourself.

Combining them into one file is also very simple. Place all these archives in one folder, and unzip any of them. You don't need to unzip them all, just one is enough. All the parts will then come together, and you will have a complete file.

Self-extracting archive

You've probably seen some archives that you could double-click on to automatically unarchive them? There is no need to right-click and look for unzipping items. You don’t even need to have the program itself - an archiver for unpacking. Everything is inside such an archive.

The self-extracting archive has the extension exe. To extract such an archive, you double-click on it with the left mouse button, and in the window that appears, select the location where this archive will be unpacked.

If the destination folder is left as default, the archive will be unpacked into the same folder where it is located, which is very convenient.

Now let's figure out how to create such an archive. Everything is very simple. In folder My computer , or in the program Total Commander, right-click on the file or folder that you want to archive, and then select WinRAR - Add to archive .

Naturally, you must have WinRAR installed. Next, put a tick next to the item Create SFX archive , and press OK .

The abbreviation SFX stands for self-extracting, and is translated from English as self-extracting .

Upon completion of archiving, you receive this archive in the same folder where the original file or folder is located.

Self-extracting archive in parts

You can also archive the file in parts so that the first archive is self-extracting. This can be easily done by combining the method of archiving a file in parts with the method of creating a self-extracting archive.

Right-click on the file and select WinRAR - Add to archive , and in the window at point Divide into volumes of size (in bytes) specify the size of the archives. And on the right side, put a tick in front of the item Create SFX archive . Next click OK .

The self-extracting archive will be ready in parts.

Question from a user

Hello.

Tell me, I have one video of 20 GB (video recording of one game). I want to transfer it to another computer, but the file does not fit on my flash drive (it is 16 GB).

Now there is an option - either buy a new large flash drive (or portable disk), or find a way to somehow transfer the file in parts (for example, split the file into 2 parts). I tried to re-encode the video - but you have to wait a whole day, and it’s not a fact that it will be re-converted and become smaller...

Arthur, Petrozavodsk

Good day!

In general, a similar problem was encountered quite often earlier, when the Internet was not so developed and there were no capacious storage devices (now one external hard drive can solve this problem ☺).

In this article I will give several ways in which you can quickly split any file into several parts (the size you need), and then, when you transfer it to another medium, assemble it (so that everything opens and is readable).

Method No. 1: creating a multi-volume archive

One of the easiest and fastest ways to split absolutely ANY file(s) (or even folder) is to place it in a multi-volume archive. Moreover, the volume size can be set manually, exactly the one you need.

For those who are afraid that the archive creation time will be too long, I will say that the archive can be created WITHOUT COMPRESSION! Those. The archive will only be needed to pack information and split it into volumes (by the way, an uncompressed archive is packed quickly enough).

The best free archivers -

We find the folder or file that needs to be divided: right-click on it and select from the Explorer context menu "7-Zip > Add to archive" (see screenshot below).

In the archive creation settings you need:

  1. compression level: recommended “No compression” (this way you will spend much less time. Moreover, the video file will not be compressed this way);
  2. Split Volumes by Size: Enter the maximum file size in megabytes here. Let's say, for a 16 GB flash drive, it will be about 14500 MB (i.e. 14500M), example below.

After creating the archive, you will see that it consists of many parts of the same size. Now, to extract it, you need to extract the very first part of the archive (001) - see the screenshot below. In general, 7-Zip is a fairly “smart” program and will highlight the file you need with its icon ☺.

Method number 2: breakdown in Total Commander

Another very good and reliable way to split a file is to use a special function in the Total Commander program.

Total Commander

A very functional and convenient file manager (in my opinion, much more convenient than the classic Explorer). Allows you to browse directories without any problems, containing thousands of files. It also allows you to easily and quickly work with all popular archives: ZIP, 7ZIP, ARJ, LZH, RAR, UC2, TAR, GZ, CAB, ACE, etc.

There are unique features: group renaming of files (with custom filters and masks), file splitting, working with FTP, etc.

And so, first of all, we launch Total Commander and find our file. In my case, this is an archive with a photo ("photo.7z") - the size of this file is about 1 GB. Task: break it into parts, each of which is no more than 250 MB.

Let's split one large file into 5 parts

First select this file and then click on the menu "Files/Split file..." . See screenshot below.

As I said above, I indicated 250 MB (by the way, the program has all the most popular sizes: for Floppy 3.5 floppies, CD/DVD disks, etc.), and indicated the same folder in which the original file is located.

After which, the file was divided into 5 parts (plus the sixth part - the checksum of the file (necessary to check the integrity of the archive, I also recommend saving and not deleting!)).

Actually, now you can transfer all these separated files in any order to another PC, and then also select Total Commander in the menu "Files/Collect file..." . In general, everything is quite simple and fast...

Method number 3: cut the video into parts (without conversion)

If you are dealing with video, then in this case it is not at all necessary to pack it into an archive or resort to the help of Total Commander... You can use some video editor and split the video into certain parts (however, this is not very suitable in this case , if you don’t want to cut the video completely, because gluing the video together can be a longer procedure...).

How to do this simply and without “nerves” ☺?

You will need one video editor - VideoMONTAGE.

VideoMONTATION

One of the simplest and most intuitive video editors. The developers specifically made it very simple with a step-by-step wizard so that any user (even a complete beginner) could easily figure out how to edit and create their own video (perhaps the very first!).

The editor has all the most necessary functions for video processing. So, this option is one of the best for solving simple problems and for learning how to process video.

After installing the editor, open the function in it "Video cutting"(this opportunity appears in the first window that appears immediately after starting the program).

Then, when saving the video, be SURE to indicate that you want to save the video in original quality(see screenshot below). This way, the video will be saved without conversion and very quickly. In fact, we simply divided the video into 2-3-4 (or more) parts without editing it!

Well, that's all for me, good luck to everyone!

Additions are welcome...

Anyone who works in an office, and not only there, is very familiar with such a thing as email. I think there is no need to explain that letters, photographs and similar things are sent with its help, I am sure that everyone has known about this for a long time. But, this needs to be done wisely, as sometimes users try to transfer files of 200-330MB in size using mail, which is absolutely impossible. Some try to somehow archive them in order to compress the size, but still, even in the archive, the total size of these files will not change significantly. But not many people know that the archive can be divided into several parts with a smaller size and send them separately.

You can, of course, use some other mailer, but even they will not provide you with such an opportunity to send letters with such huge baggage. Instead, they will offer you to upload your file to the cloud and give you a link for further downloading. But what should those who need to send a file exclusively from corporate mail do, where, as a rule, the size of outgoing letters is limited to 3-5 MB.

Well, in this case, what will help us? WinRAR archiver using which we can compress our photo and break it into small parts, which can later be sent by email. So if this article is what you need and want to know how split the archive into parts using WinRaR, then be sure to read the rest of the article carefully.

Splitting or dividing a file into archives using WinRaR

In order to split or divide a file or the same folder into several archives, we will of course need a utility that is capable of creating those same archives. Here, I will show an example using two of the most popular archivers that have been recognized throughout the world.

Since WinRAR is one of the most installed programs, we will start this instruction with it. So, we have a 15 MB folder that we want to zip and split into three 5 MB archives. To do this, click on the folder to open an additional menu, where you should click on the “”.

The archive creation wizard should start, where in the “ Are common", going down to the bottom of the window you will find such a property as " Divide into volumes of size" Initially, several parameters specified by the program will be available, one of which you can immediately select and complete dividing the folder into several archives. For example, click on the arrow and in the menu of available options that appears, select the most suitable one.

If the provided parameters do not suit you, then you can easily indicate your number by exactly how many MB the archives should be divided. But, it is very important that this value be indicated in bytes, for example, as shown below. In new versions of WinRAR, you can simply set the value to MB, and next to it indicate the number 5

Note to those who don’t know how many bytes are in 1 MB

1 Kilobyte = 1024 bytes,
1 Megabyte = 1048576 bytes,
10 Megabytes = 10485760 bytes.

The way we intended split the archive into parts 5 MB each, in the field we will indicate 5242880 bytes or select MB and simply write the number 5.

To complete the process of splitting the archive into parts, click on “ OK” and at the output we get several archives that will not exceed the previously specified value.

How to split an archive into parts in 7-Zip

7-zip less popular than WinRAR, but it all has its ardent fans who use exclusively this utility when working with archives. In splitting the archive into parts in 7-Zip there is nothing complicated, moreover, the process of dividing the archive is almost the same as in WinRAR.

Well, by clicking on the folder, go to the 7-Zip line and in the menu that appears, click on “ Add to archive" or in the Russian version "Add to archive".

The Archive Creation Wizard will open, you should pay attention to the “ Split into volumes of size" or " Split to volumes, bytes"(in English version). So, we split the folder into archives of 5 MB, respectively, in the field we indicate the value 5242880 . In order to understand how much is contained in 1 MB, byte, pay attention to the table that I cited just above.

After specifying the size, click " OK"and you will receive a divided folder into archives that will not exceed 5MB in size.

Using this method, you can split the archive into parts, the size of which will allow you to easily send them by mail or use them for other, personal purposes.
