How to set a password on a computer with any version of Windows. Setting a password on your computer How to set a password to use the program

Setting a password on Windows is the most common way to protect a user account. It allows you to limit the use of your computer by other people and protect your personal data. Unfortunately, this tool is not able to ensure complete PC security. However, it helps protect the system from hacking by persons without the appropriate skills and significantly increases the time required for unauthorized access to the computer.

Setting a password in Windows 7

Click the “Start” button and select “Control Panel” in the column on the right. Find the "View" drop-down list at the top right of the window. In it, select the “Icons” display mode (large or small). After that, go to the “User Accounts” section. All accounts created in the OS are displayed there.

If more than one account is available, select the one you use. As a rule, this is an administrator account. Next, follow the first link in the section for changing account settings. Enter the new key on the first line and repeat it on the second line. Re-entering is required in order not to lose access to the OS if a typing error was made in the first field. In the bottom input line, set a passphrase that will help you remember your password if you forget it.

The more characters in the code, the more reliable it is. The variety of signs also plays an important role. Microsoft recommends using uppercase and lowercase letters, numbers, and special characters. However, such protection is often excessive, since “seven” profiles are rarely hacked by brute force. Burglars more often use other methods that do not depend on the complexity of the password string. In any case, adding a few numbers will not hurt, and will not significantly complicate authentication.

Important tip! Do not use a phrase as a hint that will help someone other than you solve the secret code. Before saving the changes, think again whether the new profile access key is too simple and understandable based on the hint phrase.

Windows 8 Custom Protection

Starting with this version, Microsoft is adding the Metro interface. The list of available user authorization paths is expanding. The following options are available to choose from:

  1. Set a password to log into Windows.
  2. Set a graphic key.
  3. Add a PIN.

At the same time, the last two options work only after specifying the traditional code. It continues to be the main method of protecting the system, and the visual key and PIN code work as additional ones on the authorization screen. If you forget them, you will always be able to log into your profile in the usual way. There is a separate option for this on the start screen.

To specify the required passwords, call the right Charms panel. On touch devices, this action is performed by moving your finger from the right edge of the screen to the left. It is also possible to launch the panel using the mouse. To do this, move the cursor to the upper right corner of the interface, and after the transparent panel appears, move it down. Another way is to hover your cursor at the bottom right corner and then move up. An option with hot keys is also available. To open Charms, use the combination “Win + C”.

In the panel that opens, select the bottom item - “Options”. In the new window, go to PC settings and open the “Accounts” window there. On the “Login Options” tab, click the first “Change” button. Type a new passphrase in the first text field and confirm it by entering the same characters in the second. Below you can set a hint that appears if you forget the security key for the “eight”. Save your changes.

To set a graphic password, click on the second button in the options window - “Add”. This authentication method involves performing a sequence of gestures with a mouse or finger on a touch screen. Gestures can be of three types: dots (single clicks), lines and circles. All actions must be performed in the right sequence and in the right places. For positioning accuracy, a background image is used, which is why this authentication method is called “graphic”.

Before adding a visual key, the system will ask for a master password. Enter it and click "OK". Next, click on the button located under the description of visual authorization options and select any image to use as a background. After that, draw three gestures one by one in the selected places in the picture.

Graphical login confirmation is most convenient for use on tablets and touch monitors. Since the number of possible gesture combinations is almost unlimited, this authentication method is secure. However, one caveat should be taken into account. On touch devices, there is a threat of recognition of gestures based on traces on the screen. If the screen was completely clean before touching, individual fingerprints, lines and circles may remain on it. It is recommended to remove them by wiping the surface after insertion.

The final type of security used as an alternative to the regular Windows authentication method is a PIN. Like on bank cards, it consists of four digits. This authorization method is the fastest and most convenient, since after entering the combination you don’t even need to press “Enter”. Login will be performed automatically after entering the last digit. But from a security point of view, it is the least reliable, because the number of possible code options (from 0000 to 9999) is only 10,000.

To protect the user profile from being hacked by trying combinations, Microsoft added a confirmation input after several unsuccessful authentication attempts. At the same time, a captcha appears on the screen, which must be entered to continue working. The PIN is added when you click the third button in the options window. To enter the desired menu, you will also need to set a master password, and the PIN itself will need to be entered twice. Click “Done” to confirm the changes.

Note! New settings take effect immediately, without restarting the computer. To see how authorization works, lock your PC by pressing the “Win+L” hotkeys. The system will be unlocked after entering the specified key.

How to set a login password in Windows 10

With the exception of some small details, the profile protection mechanism in the “ten” is organized in the same way as in the previous version of the OS. To open the settings you need, go to the Start menu and select the gear icon - Settings. Next, go to the “Accounts” section and select the “Login Options” tab on the left. The main code can be set by clicking on the first button in the right column. If you have previously specified an access key, instead of “Add” the button will say “Change”.

If you change, you will need to enter the old Windows access key, and enter the new value in the next two fields. If account protection is activated for the first time, it will be enough to install a new code. The PIN code is activated separately. Unlike the previous version of Windows, on the “ten” it can consist of more than just four digits. The maximum length of such a code is now 127 characters. After checking the box below the text fields in the PIN code, you can use:

  • Numbers;
  • lower case;
  • capital letters;
  • special signs.

Important! If you have forgotten your PIN code on Windows 10, you can log in using your main password. After this, it is recommended to delete the forgotten PIN and, if necessary, set a new code.

To protect your computer from unwanted users, it is better to take care of creating a strong and complex password that you must enter every time you log in. This is especially effective when you need to restrict access to children, curious friends or colleagues on your work computer. In Windows, there are two options for setting a password on your computer: one of them is simpler and faster, and the other involves installing a code in the BIOS, which in itself is difficult if you are an inexperienced user. Try to understand both methods and choose the one that suits you most, or install two codes at once for greater system reliability.

How to password protect a computer: the standard method

This option is perfect if you are protecting your personal computer from ordinary users who will not bother with password reset methods. In addition, you will always have a small hint available to you in case you forget the code. Other accounts on the computer will lose access to your personal folder and will not be able to view your documents, photos and other files.

  • Go to the Start menu and then to “Control Panel”.
  • Sort by category in the upper right corner of the screen. This will make it easier for you to find the item you need. Click on the line “User Accounts and Family Safety”.

  • In the window that opens, click on “User Accounts”.

  • You will now see your account settings. If you need to set a password for it, then click “Create a password for your account,” and if for another user’s account, then “Manage another account.”

  • Enter a password twice that you will not forget and no one will guess about it. At the bottom you can find a field to enter a hint. Enter a word there that will make you think of a password.

  • You can change your password at any time by clicking on the “Change your password” item.

How to password protect a computer through BIOS

You will need this method if you need to protect your network from a skillful teenager who has already reset your Windows password more than once. Try setting the code in the BIOS.

  • To do this, you need to carefully read the instructions on the screen while the operating system boots.
  • As a rule, you enter the BIOS by pressing F7 or F11, but these buttons differ on all computers.
  • After entering the BIOS, find the “Set User Password” item and enter the code.
  • Restart your computer.

This password cannot be reset without switches on the motherboard. Your computer is now securely protected. Don't forget it under any circumstances.

How to temporarily password protect your computer

There is another method that allows accounts to use the computer temporarily and then blocks access. This is very convenient for restraining children.

  • Go to Control Panel, and then to the “User Accounts and Family Safety” section.
  • Enter the “Parental Control” subsection.

  • Here you can manage a particular account, for example, a guest account.

  • Switch the checkbox to the “Enable using current settings” line.

  • Select the setting you want to block. For now, consider the “Time Limit” item.

  • You are offered a convenient schedule. Mark with blue marks those hours when you can use the computer without a password.

  • Once the schedule is set, click “Ok”.

  • You can also select the programs that you can use.
  • This type of parental control gives you confidence in your child if he or she uses the computer too often.

It is much more effective to set a password to boot the system through the BIOS. The advantage of this method is that it will have to be entered before the operating system boots, and not after. This method is more reliable than the previous one.

It is very difficult to bypass such protection. Unfortunately, not all BIOS versions have this option. This should not be confused with the password for the BIOS itself.

First you need to go into the BIOS, then select the Security section. We are looking for the “Password on boot” or “Set HDD Password” item, depending on the BIOS version, this option allows you to set a boot password.

Now you know, how to put a password on a computer, and if you do everything correctly, no one will be able to use your computer or laptop without your knowledge.

But about that how to set a password on a computer I haven’t written yet, so I’ll correct myself. In fact, this is a very important point that will help protect your computer from prying eyes. But to tell the truth, any protection can be hacked if necessary, and if someone really needs your information, they will get it. But these are special cases; to protect your computer from children and curious relatives, the password that is set on your account will be enough.

Today I will write how to set a password for your account in the Windows 7 operating system; you can also set a password in the BIOS system, but I think that I will write about this a little later, in a separate article. We'll look at how to set a password when you have one administrator account.

I advise you to immediately come up with a password that you will set. I’ll say right away that there are no dates of birth, last names, first names, etc. you don’t even need to hack such a password, you can guess it :). Come up with a good password of ten characters. The main thing is that you remember it, and preferably not write it down anywhere, just so that no one sees it, well, you understand :).

When setting a password, look carefully at the keyboard layout language, whether Caps lock is enabled or disabled. Otherwise, set a password, and when you try to log in using it you will be refused, my friend once had this, he hid it from himself :).

If you have already come up with a password and know how to enter it correctly, then let's get started.

Set a password on your computer

Open “Start” and click on the picture of your account, so we will quickly get to the account settings.

A window will open in which click on “Creating a password for your account”.

A window will open in which we will set a password. Everything is very simple, we enter the password we came up with twice, then a hint, this is a thing that everyone can see, but only you it should remind you of the password. And press "Create a password".

Now you can restart your computer, and when you turn it on you will need to enter the password we set, like this:

You can also block your computer, for example, when you leave it for a few minutes. Just press Win+L and the computer will be locked. A window will appear in which you need to enter the password we set and after clicking on the arrow, you can continue working with the computer. Sometimes this is very useful.

In order to remove or change the password that we set on your computer, also go to Start and click on the photo of your account. A window will appear in which you can select “Change your password”, or “Removing your password”.

In order to change the password, you need to enter the current password, and then the new one twice. And if you want to delete a password, you just need to specify the current password once and confirm the deletion.

This is how easy it is to protect your computer, and just as easy to remove the protection, for example, when relatives leave :). Good luck!

Computer protection is always given a lot of attention. To protect yourself from viruses, install antiviruses, and to protect yourself from unwanted or very curious users, you can set a password and thereby block access to information stored on the computer from prying eyes.
