Windows 10 cannot be installed. If Windows cannot be installed on this disk. Using the SFC and DISM tools

Starting with Vista, the Windows installation process has been simplified due to the presence of a graphical interface when selecting the system installation partition. Having learned to set the boot priority in the BIOS version of your computer and understood the specifics of the arrangement of hard drive partitions, in fact, any more or less experienced user can independently carry out the Windows installation process. But provided that he does not encounter an emergency situation. And there can be a lot of them. Let's look at some of them below.

So, what could be the reasons for the Windows installation process to fail?

The article mentions the possibility of downloading distributions and creating installation media for Windows 8.1 and 10 using the Microsoft Media Creation Tool. Links to download this utility:

  • for Windows 8.1 http://windows.microsoft.com/ru-ru/windows-8/create-reset-refresh-media
  • for Windows 10 http://www.microsoft.com/ru-ru/software-download/windows10

1. Computer specifications

If your computer does not meet the minimum requirements for installing a particular version of Windows, some part of the system installation process may fail. Modern computers almost all meet the minimum requirements for installing the latest versions of Windows. On old computers with less than 1 GB of RAM, less than 1 GHz processor frequency and a hard drive that is not capable of providing 40-50 GB of space for the system disk, it is better not to try to install Windows 7, 8.1 and 10. Even if the system installation process is completed successfully , in the future, the performance of these versions of Windows will be terrible. It is better to install Windows XP on old low-power PCs and laptops.

If we are talking about a modern, but low-power budget laptop, and installing one of the latest versions of Windows is of fundamental importance, it is better to focus on the latest version 10. It is more productive compared to versions 7 and 8.1, and contains a larger number of device drivers in its distribution , which will save you from red tape in the future with their manual installation. Also, Windows 10 is better adapted to work with small netbook screens than other versions of the system due to the presence of a tablet mode.

2. Pirated builds of Windows

In some cases, an unsuccessful build of Windows downloaded from the first torrent tracker available can cause the installation process to fail. Pirate modified builds are an attractive way to get Windows with an alternative appearance, and even for free, but this is far from the best way to get a stable operating system.

Builders of illegal Windows distributions rarely release original images untouched. As a rule, even the slightest changes are made to the system. Which system components were removed from the Windows build offered for download, and which, on the contrary, were added, whether the interface was modified - all this is indicated in distributions on torrent trackers or in descriptions on other sites. However, carefully reading information from builders does not guarantee a stable build of Windows. It is better to install the original system builds that Microsoft offers on its web resources. In addition, you can use Windows 10 completely free and legally.

3. Problems with CD/DVD drives

CD/DVD drives are finicky devices. Many drive models refuse to read DVDs (both regular and installation) created using low-quality discs or even the slightest scratch on the disc. If we are talking about computer devices that support booting from USB drives, and these are the majority, it is better to carry out the Windows installation process using a bootable flash drive. In addition to the fact that the software market today offers quite a large number of programs that can burn bootable USB media, Microsoft itself has taken care of all the tools necessary to install Windows versions 8.1 and 10.

Using Microsoft's Media Creation Tool, you can download the operating system distribution and immediately write it to a bootable USB flash drive. You can download such a utility for creating installation media for Windows 8.1 and 10 on the Microsoft website completely free of charge.

4. Problems with the hard drive

The Windows installation process may fail if there are problems with the computer's hard drive. If the previous operating system is still operational, you need to log into it and diagnose the hard drive using special programs, for example, CrystalDiskInfo, HD Tune Pro, Hard Drive Inspector, Hard Disk Sentinel, etc.

And if the system disk is already formatted, you can resort to Live Disk - boot disks designed to resuscitate the operating system. They usually contain one or even several programs for diagnosing the hard drive. If the diagnostics show a poor condition of the hard drive, it is better to wait a little while reinstalling the system and show the computer to a specialist.

5. Installation of the system in a circle

When the file copying stage is completed during the Windows installation process, the computer reboots, and the further process of installing system components and drivers occurs on the system disk. If you use a bootable USB flash drive to install the system, you must remove it after copying the files so that the computer can boot from the hard drive. Naturally, initially, when setting the priority for booting from a flash drive in the BIOS, the hard drive must be set as the second priority boot device.

If the hard drive is not set as the second priority, after copying Windows files is complete, you need to purposefully set it as the primary boot device for the computer by entering the BIOS. Otherwise, downloading Windows installation files will occur in a circle.

It's easier to avoid the round-robin Windows installation process by using a bootable DVD. In this case, as a rule, you need to confirm booting from removable media by pressing any key when the message “Press any key to boot from CD” appears on the screen. After copying the installation files is complete and after rebooting the computer, you simply do not need to press anything to boot from the hard drive, if it is the second boot priority.

6. Connected digital TV

If a digital TV is connected to the computer via the HDMI output, while the main monitor is connected via the VGA or DVI outputs, a blank screen may be displayed on the latter instead of the installation process. As a rule, the HDMI output has priority when determining the main screen: the digital TV is determined by screen No. 1, and it is on it that the image with the Windows installation process is displayed by default.

This is very easy to detect if the TV is turned on. But when the TV is turned off, the absence of an image on the monitor screen can be misleading, as if the system installation process is not starting. In this case, you can install Windows on the TV screen, then designate the monitor as the main screen in the installed system. You can also disconnect the TV's HDMI cable while installing Windows and reconnect it after installing the system.

7. Problems with BIOS UEFI

BIOS UEFI is a basic data input/output system of the new standard, originally designed to increase performance when working with new computer devices and to enhance security; during the process of reinstalling the operating system, it will become an obstacle if you try to install unlicensed Windows or a system version lower than 8. This situation provides the Secure Boot protocol as part of the UEFI BIOS, which includes verification of Microsoft certified keys.

Windows versions starting from 7 and earlier, as well as Linux distributions, cannot be installed on new PC builds and laptops without disabling Secure Boot. The consequence of disabling Secure Boot will be a forced abandonment of all the benefits of the UEFI BIOS. In particular, it is impossible to install Windows on a hard disk partition with the GPT (GUID) style - a partition table that allows working with disk space of more than 2.2 TB and allows the creation of 128 primary disk partitions.

Refusal of the UEFI interface and choosing a regular BIOS in the latter’s settings will give the green light to installing any operating system on a disk partition with the old MBR table.

8. UEFI bootable USB flash drive

To install Windows 8.1 and 10 on laptops and build PCs with UEFI BIOS, you will need not a regular bootable USB flash drive, but a UEFI bootable USB flash drive. The ability to create one is not present in all programs for creating bootable USB media. In particular, the Rufus and WinSetupFromUSB programs can create bootable UEFI flash drives. But the easiest way to install Windows 8.1 and 10 on a GPT partition without disabling the UEFI and Secure Boot interface is to use the Media Creation Tool utility mentioned above.

9. Skip entering a product key when installing Windows 10

While at the beginning of the installation of licensed Windows 8.1, downloaded using the Media Creation Tool utility, you will need to enter a product key, Windows 10 has more gentle conditions. Licensed Windows 10 can be installed without activation. However, this will require attentiveness so that during the system installation process at certain stages you see options with small print “Skip” and “Do it later,” which allow you to install the operating system without entering a product key.

Some may simply not notice such an advance from Microsoft during the system installation process.

As of late 2019, downloading Windows 10 for installation using the methods described below will download the Windows 10 1909 November 2019 Update. If you have already installed a licensed Windows 10 on your computer or laptop, obtained by any method, you do not need to enter a product key during installation (you should click “I don’t have a product key” at the appropriate stage). Read more about the features of activation in the article: (you can work without activation, see). If you only need to fix problems with the installed OS while it starts, you can use a simpler method: .

  1. On the first screen of the installation program, you will be asked to select a language, time format and keyboard input method - you can leave the default values, Russian.
  2. The next window is the “Install” button, which should be clicked to continue, as well as the “System Restore” item at the bottom, which will not be discussed in this article, but is very useful in some situations.
  3. You will be taken to a window to enter your product key to activate Windows 10. In most cases, unless you purchased a product key separately, all you need to do is click “I don’t have a product key.” Activation will occur automatically after connecting to the Internet, if a licensed Windows 10 was already installed on this computer or laptop. Additional options and when to use them are described in the “Additional Information” section at the end of the guide.
  4. The next step (may not appear if the edition was determined by a key, including from UEFI) is selecting the Windows 10 edition for installation. Choose the option that was previously installed (if activation of the assigned digital license is required).
  5. Read the terms of the license agreement and accept them. Once this has been done, click the "Next" button.
  6. One of the most important points is choosing the type of installation of Windows 10. There are two options: Update (can only be done if a new system is installed, when the old version of the OS is installed on the disk) - in this case, all settings, programs, files of the previous installed system are saved, and the old system itself is saved in the Windows.old folder (but this option is not always possible to run). That is, this process is similar to a simple update; it will not be considered here. Custom installation - this item allows you to perform a clean installation without saving (or partially saving) user files, and during installation you can partition the disks and format them, thereby clearing the computer of previous Windows files. It is this method that will be described.
  7. After specifying a custom installation, you will be taken to a window for selecting a disk partition for installation (possible installation errors at this stage are described below). Moreover, if this is not a new hard drive or SSD, you will see a much larger number of partitions than you previously saw in Explorer, an example is shown in the screenshot. I will try to explain the options (also in the video at the end of the instructions I show and tell you in detail what and how you can do in this window).
  • If your computer has multiple physical disks, they will appear as Disk 0, Disk 1 and so on. Each can have multiple sections. No matter what drive you install Windows 10 on, Disk 0 will be used to record system files, hidden partitions, and the bootloader. Therefore, ideally, install the OS on Disk 0 (otherwise, if this disk is disconnected, the system on the other disk will not start). If, for example, you purchased a new SSD and it is displayed as Disk 1, you can try to find a separate item in the BIOS to indicate the order of hard drives and put the SSD in first place, or change the SATA cables (if this interface is used) between the two drives, so that the desired disk appears in the installation program as Disk 0.
  • If you had Windows preinstalled by the manufacturer, then in addition to the system partitions on Disk 0 (their number and sizes may differ: 100, 300, 450 MB), you will see another (usually) partition 10-20 gigabytes in size. I do not recommend touching it in any way, as it contains a system recovery image that allows you to quickly return your computer or laptop to its factory state if the need arises. Also, you should not change system-reserved partitions (unless you decide to completely wipe the hard drive).
  • As a rule, during a clean installation of the system, it is placed on a partition corresponding to drive C and formatted (or deleted). To do this, select this partition (you can determine it by size), click “Format”. And after that, having selected it, click “Next” to continue installing Windows 10. If messages appear about the impossibility of installation on this partition, click on the message to get information about the error (they are discussed later in the instructions). Data on other partitions and disks will not be affected. If you had Windows 7 or XP installed on your computer before installing Windows 10, a more reliable option would be to delete the partition (but not format it), select the unallocated area that appears (unallocated space on the disk) and click “Next” to have the program automatically create the necessary system partitions installation (or use of existing ones, if available).
  • If you skip formatting or deleting and choose to install a partition on which the OS is already installed, then the previous Windows installation will be placed in the Windows.old folder, and your files on the C drive will not be affected (but there will be quite a lot of garbage on the hard drive).
  • Best method: if there is nothing important on your system disk (Disk 0), you can completely delete all partitions of this disk one by one, select a single unallocated space on Disk 0 and click the “Next” button, this will avoid almost any errors and problems. You can create disk D (if required) after installing the system.
  • If the previous system is installed on partition or drive C, and you select another partition or drive to install Windows 10, then as a result, you will have two operating systems installed on your computer at the same time and select the one you need when you boot the computer.

Note: If, when you select a partition on the disk, you see a message that Windows 10 cannot be installed on this partition, click on this text, and then, depending on the full text of the error, use the following instructions:

  1. After selecting your partition option for installation, click the “Next” button. Windows 10 files will begin copying to your computer.
  2. After the reboot, no action will be required from you for some time - “Preparation” and “Configuring components” will occur. In this case, the computer may reboot, and sometimes freeze with a black or blue screen. In this case, just wait, this is a normal process - sometimes dragging on for hours. Important: If you get Windows 10 setup again after a reboot, simply set to boot from HDD or SSD in BIOS or Windows Boot Manager in UEFI, or unplug the USB flash drive, or don't press any key when prompted to do so.
  3. The next stage is setting up the basic system parameters. The first point is choosing a region.
  4. The second stage is to confirm that the keyboard layout is correct.
  5. The installer will then prompt you to add additional keyboard layouts. If you do not require input options other than Russian and English, skip this step (English is present by default).
  6. If you have active network adapters, you will be prompted to connect to the Internet. You may want to do this, especially if you plan to use a Microsoft account. If you require a local account, I would recommend not connecting to the network until the Windows 10 installation is complete. To do this, click on “I don’t have Internet” and “Continue limited installation” in the next window.
  7. If you have an Internet connection, you will be offered two options for setting up Windows 10 - for personal use or for an organization (use this option only if you need to connect your computer to your work network, domain, and Windows servers in your organization). Typically, you should select the option for personal use.
  8. The next step of installation is setting up your Windows 10 account. If you have an active Internet connection, you are prompted to set up a Microsoft account or enter an existing one. You can click “Offline Account” in the bottom left to create a local account (in the latest versions of Windows 10 Home there is no “Offline Account” option, but creating one is still possible, see). If there is no Internet connection, a local account is created. When installing the latest versions of Windows 10, after entering your login and password, you will also need to ask security questions to recover your password if you lose it.
  9. If you use a Microsoft account, you'll be prompted to use a PIN to sign in. You will also be prompted to set up OneDrive.
  10. If you choose an Offline account, you'll be told again about the benefits of using a Microsoft account (opt-out) and then asked to enter your computer username. Do not enter the name Administrator because it is assigned to a hidden system account. The user you create with any name will in any case be a Windows 10 administrator.
  11. Enter your account password, confirm it, and then select and provide answers to security questions that will be used if you forget your password.
  12. You will be asked to enable Windows 10 Activity History, a new feature that stores the history of programs, documents, and sites used, with the ability to access from other devices with the same Microsoft account. Enable or disable - at your discretion.
  13. The final step of setup is to configure Windows 10 privacy settings, which include location sharing, speech recognition, diagnostic data sharing, and creating your advertising profile. Read carefully and disable what you don't need. I turn off all the options, but if you have a laptop or tablet, we recommend leaving Location and Search for your device turned on, this can help you find it if you lose it.
  14. Following this, the last stage will begin - setting up and installing standard applications, preparing Windows 10 for launch, on the screen it will look like the inscription: “This may take a few minutes.” In fact, this can take minutes or even hours, especially on weak computers; you should not force it to shut down or reboot during this time.
  15. And finally, you will see the Windows 10 desktop - the system has been installed successfully, you can begin to configure and study it.

Video instructions for installing Windows 10 from a USB flash drive

In the proposed video instructions, I tried to clearly show all the nuances and the entire process of installing Windows 10 from start to finish.

Actions after installing the OS on your computer

The first thing you should worry about after a clean installation of the system on your computer is installing drivers. At the same time, Windows 10 will load many device drivers itself if there is an Internet connection. Most drivers will work fine, but just in case, keep in mind that they can be downloaded:

  • For laptops - from the official website of the laptop manufacturer, in the support section, for your specific laptop model. At the same time, even if the official website has drivers only for Windows 8.1, 8 and 7, they can be installed in Windows 10, and usually they will work. Cm.
  • For PC - from the website of the motherboard manufacturer for your model.
  • For a video card - from the corresponding NVIDIA or AMD (or even Intel) websites, depending on which video card is used. Cm. .

The second action I recommend is after successfully installing all drivers and activating the system, but before installing programs (using built-in OS tools or using third-party programs), in order to significantly speed up the reinstallation of Windows in the future if necessary.

If, after a clean installation of the system on your computer, something does not work (for example,) or you need to configure something (for example,), you will most likely be able to find possible solutions to the problem on my website, or use the site search in the menu by asking question in your own words: with a high probability a solution will be found.

Most Windows 10 users have encountered a problem where, when starting the computer, a blue screen appears with information that an error has occurred (without any information about the factors that caused it).

Let's look at the main problems that arise when turning on a computer with Windows 10, and ways to solve them.

CRITICAL_PROCESS_DIED

Probably, most often, users see a blue background on the screen with a smiley face conveying a negative emotion, and a message that an error occurred when starting Windows.

For the first time, try restarting Windows 10, and when this does not help, restore it using one of the latest rollback points.

At this stage, it is important to know what actions most likely caused the problem when starting Windows 10, in order to resume it the first time, and not roll back endlessly, choosing an older restore point each time. If you updated the OS or installed a driver/program before rebooting or shutting down the PC, select the restore point created by the system before performing this operation.

Boot Failure

This error indicates that it is impossible to detect a boot record on the logical system disk.

There are several solutions here:

  • check that the priority of boot devices in the BIOS or UEFI is correct (perhaps the computer starts booting from a connected flash drive);
  • Next, we check the SSD or system partition for bad sectors;
  • We restore the Windows bootloader using System Restore, booting from the installation disk.

Let’s look at the last option in more detail, because not all beginners understood what we were talking about.

  • We boot the computer from a removable bootable media or CD with Windows 10 installation files.
  • On the screen with the “Install” button, click on the “System Restore” link.

  • Select the additional boot options item, which is responsible for troubleshooting and troubleshooting.
  • In the menu with additional Windows 10 startup options, select the item indicated in the screenshot so that the installer will restore the boot record.

Operating system wasn't found

The error described in this section appears when the computer starts, immediately after its hardware is initialized. Its cause is hardware or logical damage to the drive from which the system is trying to read information, because it was not possible to find and extract information from the bootloader.

Try disconnecting and reconnecting the media using another free cable. Check the surface of the media for bad sectors, which may cause you to be unable to access the system information contained in them. In this case, restoring Windows 10 is not recommended - the best solution would be to reinstall the OS and completely format the partition. Then the future system partition will be checked for the presence of bad sectors and then corrected or reassigned.

Other common mistakes

Let's briefly look at other, less common problems that arise during the launch of the "ten".

  • Error 0x800F0923 - one of the drivers or software products used on the computer is incompatible with the current Windows update/edition.

If restoring the system followed by updating all installed drivers/programs (or removing products that are incompatible with the current update) does not help, contact Microsoft support.

  • Error code 0x80200056 - most likely, the update process was interrupted and the computer needs to re-run the update to correct the functioning problems.
  • Black screen when turning on computer - boot into safe mode and enable low resolution mode.

Next, turn off each of the video adapters one by one and restart the PC to determine the problem. If you use one video card, update it, and if you cannot connect to the Internet, roll back the drivers for it.

Windows 10 is an operating system for the long haul. Microsoft has stated that no new versions (in the usual sense) will be released, and the system will be developed through permanent updates. Many Windows users want to be on the wave of progress, so they switch to the newest and most advanced operating system in the world. But those wishing to upgrade face many pitfalls, especially for owners of computers two or three years old: from incompatibility of motherboards and components to lack of support for some processors. As a result, the installation attempt fails or the process hangs.

Installing Windows 10 via the Internet

Microsoft considers the most logical way to install Windows 10 to be updating the current version of the system via the Internet (this way you can upgrade from Windows 7 and 8), for which you can download the Get Windows 10 application from the company’s website, which will do all the work independently, and in the background: will download the necessary components, install drivers, and save user data.

Many experienced users prefer Clean Install - installing from removable media - in order to have complete control over the situation. The best media for such an installation is a bootable USB flash drive with an operating system distribution image. The problem is that the OS tools format the flash drive as a disk with an MBR partition. On computers with UEFI (that is, most modern ones), installing the system from such a flash drive will fail and the installer will not see the partition with the files.

If you don’t want to encounter an error, prepare a boot disk in GPT format. A program that will do this quickly and for free is Rufus.

Video: creating a bootable USB flash drive in Rufus

The disk contains an MBR partition table

When booting in UEFI mode, Windows 10 Setup will not be able to install the system on a disk with MBR partitions. This situation is possible if the Windows 7 or lower operating system was previously installed on the disk. As a result, a warning is displayed and the installation is paused.

To continue with the installation, you need to convert the disk to GPT format. There are two ways to solve this problem: fast - with the loss of all data on the disk - and slow, with preservation of information. If you don't need the information or it's just a used disc from the secondary market, the first method is best:

  1. When you receive a warning about MBR partitions on the disk, press Shift+F10: this will open a command prompt window.
  2. Enter the following commands sequentially:
    • diskpart;
    • list disk - the program will display a list of disks;
    • select disk n - select the drive to be converted;
    • clean - delete all partitions;
    • convert gpt - convert the disk to GPT format;
    • exit.
  3. Close the window and click the "Update" button in the partition selection screen.
  4. Select unallocated disk space for installation and continue: the error will no longer appear.

To implement the second method - converting a disk while saving data - you will need a software package for working with disk partitions. Let's focus on the Minitool Partition Wizard program: it is free, and you can download a bootable flash drive image from the manufacturer's website.

The message about the impossibility of installing the system on a disk with MBR partitions can be avoided by switching the boot mode to Legacy in the BIOS settings. But this is a temporary solution, which will then lead to a decrease in the speed and reliability of the system. The best option would still be to convert the disk.

Windows 10 won't install to solid state drive (SSD)

When installing Windows 10 on an SSD drive, you may encounter errors such as “infinite installation”: at a certain stage, the computer reboots and starts the installation again. There is also such a nuisance as a critically low access speed to the SSD - installation can last 12–15 hours. In addition, sometimes the installer does not recognize the disk and the SSD is not displayed in the disk selection window. To get rid of such errors, you should take a number of simple steps:

  1. Download the latest BIOS version from the official website of the motherboard or laptop manufacturer and install it according to the instructions provided.
  2. In the BIOS settings, be sure to enable the boot type - UEFI.
  3. On the peripheral settings screen, select the controller operation type SATA - AHCI.
  4. If the computer, in addition to the SSD, also has internal drives. Disable them before starting installation by disconnecting the cables from the motherboard.
  5. When the installation begins, on the disk selection screen you should delete any partitions on the SSD, if they are present there. Install the system in an unallocated area, allowing the installation program to create and format the partition automatically.

To install the system, select an unallocated area

Blue screen when installing Windows 10

Blue screen, also known as Blue Screen Of Death (BSOD), is a Windows OS diagnostic message about a critical error, after which the system cannot function. Errors can occur both during installation of the operating system and during its further operation.

Most often, such errors appear when there is a problem with the computer hardware. To get rid of the error, you can take the following steps:

  1. If the motherboard's BIOS includes options for overclocking the processor and RAM, disable them.
  2. Check the amount of installed RAM. If you have multiple sticks installed, try leaving only one of them before running the installer. This will put the memory controller into single-channel mode - slow but error-tolerant.
  3. Disable all peripheral devices except those required during the installation phase.
  4. Make sure that the bitness of the OS distribution and the bitness of the processor in your computer match. If you try to install a 64-bit OS on a 32-bit processor, the installation will fail. You can check the processor bit depth using the free CPU-Z utility.
  5. Remove the hard drive and install Windows 10 on another computer that does not experience the error. After installation is complete, return the disk and try to boot in normal mode.

Black screen when installing Windows 10

One of the common problems is a black screen (with or without a mouse cursor) after installing the operating system. This error most often appears on computers with discrete AMD and NVidia video cards; this does not happen with integrated video. It is possible that the computer is installing downloaded updates: in this case, you should wait 15–20 minutes until the welcome screen appears. If waiting does not lead to a positive result, you should restart the computer and then disable the system's fast startup function (this is guaranteed to eliminate the black screen problem with AMD or NVidia video cards).

Windows 10 takes too long to install

Let's look separately at a group of errors due to which the installation of Windows 10 takes too long. In normal mode, on an average computer, a complete system installation takes no more than 35–40 minutes; on a system with an SSD, it takes 3–4 times faster.

Windows 10 gets stuck on logo when installing

This problem most often occurs when trying to install Windows 10 on one of the Samsung laptops. Some time ago, the company stopped producing laptops and stopped purchasing OEM versions of the operating system. Therefore, Microsoft removed support for these laptops from the distribution. As a result, the installation program freezes already at the system logo, that is, at the very beginning.

You can install the operating system by removing the hard drive, which is connected to another computer, where the operating system installation procedure takes place. Then the disk is returned back to the laptop and after the automatic setup phase, Windows 10 works fine on it.

Windows 10 hangs while preparing files for installation

This error occurs when updating Windows 7 or Windows 8 using Windows Update. The installation progress can stop at an arbitrary point and not increase indefinitely. In this case, the best option would be to install the operating system from bootable media (flash drive). On the start screen, you can select the installation mode - “Update” - and all your data and programs installed in the previous version of the OS will be saved.

Windows 10 installation stuck at 0%

This issue occurs when you try to upgrade to Windows 10 from previous versions of the OS. An Update Center error does not allow you to install a new system; when you try, you receive the message “There were some problems installing updates...”

To make the installation of Windows 10 possible, you need to run a special script that will reset all Windows Update errors.

  1. Create a Notepad file and write the following commands in it (without the semicolon):
  2. Save the file as winupdate-reset.bat.
  3. Click on the file icon RMB (right mouse button) and run it as administrator.
  4. Close the script window and restart your computer.

Now you can re-run the upgrade to Windows 10 - there will be no errors.

Windows installation aborted with 25% error

At 25%, Windows 10 installation may freeze with error code 0xC1900101.

The error indicates a conflict between peripheral devices and the installation program. Although Microsoft does not provide any official instructions on how to fix it, you can achieve a normal system installation by following these steps:

  1. When installing Windows 10, use a flash drive. Installing and updating from the operating system or from an optical disc increases the risk of error 0xC1900101.
  2. Disconnect all peripherals, leaving only the keyboard and mouse.
  3. Disconnect all SATA and ATA drives, except the one on which you are installing the system.

Installation freezes at 32 or 99%

If the installation freezes after 32%, this is a feature of the system update mechanism, and not a bug. The amount of data that needs to be downloaded from the Internet is about 10 gigabytes, and the number of files is in the tens of thousands. Depending on the speed of the Internet connection of the central processor and the amount of RAM of the computer being updated, the Windows 10 installation procedure may take a long time. Sometimes the process can last almost a day.

When updating, there are several “checkpoints”, after which the process slows down so much that the update program seems to be frozen. All you have to do is wait in cases such as:

  • on a black screen with a blue circle in the range of 30–39%, when the Windows update system downloads all dynamic updates for Windows 10 from the network;
  • by 96–99% when Windows OS backs up user data;
  • while the message “This will take a little longer than usual, but it will be ready soon” remains on the screen.

You can significantly speed up the update process by turning off all USB peripherals, as well as additional monitors, if any.

Windows 10 does not create partitions during installation

This error occurs when you try to install an OS on a disk with an already created partition table. There are no unallocated areas on the disk, the installation program cannot create additional hidden partitions for system needs and displays the error message “Could not create a new or find an existing partition.”

In order for the installation program to create the structure of system partitions necessary for the operation of the OS, you must either delete existing partitions from the disk (in which case all data will be lost), or the partitioning program must reduce those that are on the disk. This will free up approximately 700 MB of space and installation will be possible.

In the first case, select the existing partition with the cursor without leaving the disk selection window and click “Delete”. Then, in the same way, allocate the freed up space and specify it for further installation of the operating system.

In the second case, you will need a bootable USB flash drive with the Minitool Partition Wizard program.

Windows 10 installation reboots at 64%

The error occurs after installing the cumulative update KB3081424 (or using an installation disk where this update is already integrated). The installation program scans the system registry and, if it finds entries for non-existent users in it, it crashes, after which the update tries to install again - and so on ad infinitum. To fix the error, you need to make changes to the system registry:

  1. After restarting the computer in safe mode (hold down the F8 key at startup), launch the registry editor through the command line interface.
  2. Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\.
  3. Remove the ProfileList key.
  4. Restart your computer and continue with the installation or system update.

Windows 10 installation window does not appear

A very rare error that also occurs when installing other systems of the Windows family. Appears on configurations that have a floppy drive. Solution to the problem - using the BIOS settings, disable the drive and in the Drive A (B) line set the value to disabled.

Device drivers not found

During the installation process, the installation program reports that there are no drivers for the drive and stops. It is not possible to continue the installation.

The reason is the USB 3.0 port to which you have connected a bootable flash drive with the system distribution or a portable hard drive. Fixing the error is very simple - switch the drive to another USB 2.0 port. It is very easy to distinguish it: ports of the USB 3.0 standard are blue, and ports of the 2.0 standard are black.

Windows 10 Installation Errors - Official Guides

Microsoft has published at least two articles dedicated to troubleshooting errors when installing Windows 10 or upgrading to it from older OSes. These are detailed manuals with error codes and brief descriptions. These are “Help for Windows 10 upgrade and installation errors” and “Troubleshooting errors when upgrading to Windows 10.” You can find them in the “Documents” section.

Please note that you can access Microsoft knowledge bases, including the articles mentioned, if you have a Microsoft account. If it’s not there, don’t be lazy to spend 15 minutes registering.

The errors and solutions discussed in the article are typical, that is, they occur on a wide variety of configurations. At the same time, there may be “floating” errors - occurring with unpredictable frequency, which are very difficult to track and systematize. The stability of the OS and the absence of problems with its installation are closely related to the quality of the components from which the computer is assembled. Use RAM modules from trusted brands, error-free and damage-free hard drives, and a reliable cooling system. After all, it is much easier to prevent errors than to deal with them in the process of work.

It so happened that recently, several times in a row, I was faced with the fact that when I tried to install images of various programs in Windows 10 from an ISO flash drive, I just couldn’t do it. After startup, either a cursor on a black screen or various inscriptions appeared on the monitor. Everything stopped there; attempts to wait for a while led to nothing. Nothing was loading. Installing an image from a USB drive simply froze without starting. I tried for a long time to find all sorts of solutions to this problem: I formatted the disk, downloaded the images again, re-uploaded them to other flash drives - but it was all in vain. From this I concluded that the problem, apparently, is not at all in the files or in my USB storage.

I began to guess that the problem lay in the structure of the flash drive itself. As usual, I began to google solutions to such problems. And I found a solution that has helped me out several times already. The big advantage of this method is that the Windows 10 ISO image already recorded on a flash drive does not need to be deleted, nor does it need to be formatted on the USB drive itself.

The point, apparently, is that when creating a bootable flash drive, we use a variety of programs to write ISO images. We often abuse the same drive with these experiments more than once. As a result, the internal layout changes, additional sectors invisible to us may appear, and existing ones may be modified. How exactly and why this happens is not important to us, as amateurs in general. It is important that neither deleting files from a flash drive, nor even completely formatting a USB drive often helps resolve this issue.

Of course, my solution to the problem of the inability to load an ISO image from a flash drive is far from the only one. Perhaps your reason will be completely different. But, nevertheless, since my method described below helped me personally, and more than once, I decided to write about it on my website.

So, if you have Windows 10 (or any other ISO image) that doesn’t want to boot from a USB drive, then you need to work with this flash drive on any computer with Windows 7, 8 or 10 installed. What’s especially attractive to me personally is that that we will carry out all manipulations with our removable storage exclusively using the built-in tools of the Microsoft operating system itself, that is, without downloading and installing any third-party programs, and therefore without the threat of catching something painful, which we, of course, No need. It is also IMPORTANT that it is NOT NECESSARY to delete the ISO image already recorded on the flash drive!

Step 1: Working with flash drive partitions

First, let’s check whether any additional partitions have appeared on the flash drive during operation and numerous rewrites. To do this, in any of the above operating systems, use a search to find the “Create and format hard disk partition” utility. We just start typing its name in the search bar of the Start menu (“Creating and formatting...”) and it’s found. Let's launch this tool that helps you manage any disk space. We find our USB drive (Disk 1 in the image) and make sure that there is only one partition on our flash drive, and not several (like, for example, I have on Disk 0). If there is only one section, go to the next step.

If there are several sections, then we determine which of them is the main one. This can be done by size - the main partition on our flash drive (with the Windows 10 image or any other software) is the one whose volume matches the one displayed in Explorer. Then, in turn, stand with the mouse on each additional partition and use the right mouse button to open the menu in which we select “Delete volume”. As a result, we have unallocated (unallocated) space. It is painted black, not blue. To add it to the main partition, you need to stand on the main partition and select “Extend volume” with the right mouse button. We add all the freed space there. After this, you can try loading our ISO image from the flash drive again on your computer. If there were several partitions, then perhaps this was the problem, why the Windows 10 image did not want to boot from the flash drive. However, personally, for the sake of reliability and saving time, I immediately recommend doing the next step No. 2.

Step No. 2 is below, but for now a small digression: If some partitions on the flash drive are inactive and during the first step they could not be removed by any means, then all that remains is to completely format your USB drive. To do this in Windows 10, in my opinion, the easiest way is to use the HDD LLF Low Level Format Tool. Go to the official website, scroll down the page to the phrase “Download Windows Installer (most people will want this option)” - it is located immediately under the social buttons. Download the file whose name ends with setup. Install and launch the program. After launch, select the third item “Continue for free” (1). In the window that opens, find your flash drive (select by capacity in the far right column CAPACITY), select it and click “Continue” (2). Next, select the second tab LOW-LEVEL FORMAT (3) and click FORMAT THIS DEVICE (4) in it. The process of completely reformatting a flash drive using this program takes a lot of time. But the result never gave me any complaints.

Step 2: Make the partition with the ISO image active

At this stage, using the command line in Windows, we will designate the only partition on our flash drive as active (what else it can be and why is not important to us). To do this, again, through the search of the Start menu, we find and run with administrator rights (right mouse button) the “cmd” utility (in the search we type these three abusive letters without quotes).

  1. We make sure that our flash drive is inserted into the USB port and type “diskpart” in the command line and press Enter.
  2. Next, enter “list disk” + Enter. With this command we display all drives connected to the computer in the form of a list. We determine by size which one is our flash drive and remember the number. In my case it is “Disk 1”.
  3. Now select our disk. To do this, type “select disk=X” (X is the number of our flash drive, which we remembered at the previous stage - for me it’s 1). Press Enter.
  4. Next, enter the command “list partition” + Enter. Thus, we display all the partitions already inside our flash drive (there should be one and only “Section 1.”)
  5. Now we need to focus on this single section. To do this, type “select partition=1” and press Enter.
  6. The last command we type to make this section active is: “active” + press Enter as always.

As an example of what the entire process of activating a partition on our flash drive should look like, below is a screenshot from my own example of such work on the Command Line.

Of course, the likelihood that these instructions will help with problems with launching an ISO image of Windows 10 (or any other software) from a flash drive is far from 100 percent. However, personally, this method helped me in the vast majority of cases. As a rule, it became the last one after numerous attempts to rewrite images and boot from different USB drives. Let me remind you that it is not at all necessary to delete an already recorded image from a flash drive when carrying out the above manipulations. And, in my opinion, it’s even better not to do this, since it is unknown how the program for recording the image will mark out our active partition on the flash drive.

Installing Windows 10 from a flash drive: detailed instructions

As a rule, guides say that installing Windows 10 from a flash drive starts with BIOS settings. Indeed, you need to boot from a flash drive. This is called a clean installation of Windows 10. But you can select the media in a much simpler way, bypassing the BIOS. Launch settings are made by pressing F12. This is the so-called boot menu. A window appears showing all available devices. This is a big plus, because it's easy to get confused in the endless BIOS lists.

The same installation media, according to Microsoft's idea, is used to deploy a system from scratch and update an existing one. You can reinstall Windows 10 on any equipment where the operating system was already installed before. There is one caveat: you need to skip entering the key, because the program will not accept options from previous versions.

Installation from scratch

If you just need to update, then ten does not require downloading Ultraiso and burning blanks. In fact, the first system for people, Billy Gates took pity on his billion customers and simplified the procedure as much as possible. You no longer need to watch the program swear at your hard drive, and you won’t be able to install the hard-won distribution. Every user knows that this is the most delicate moment. Now the installer will complain that the boot record is in the wrong format, and think like this:

  • do not lose existing data;
  • get things going;
  • where to get a system unit to run utilities.

There is no such thing anymore!

Bootable media settings

We believe that we already have a multiboot flash drive for installing Windows 10, or the distribution was created by a standard utility, so we take the bull by the horns. At the very beginning, immediately after turning it on, a message appears stating that you can enter the media selection menu by pressing F12.

Boot Menu is exactly what we are talking about. Patiently click on the F12 button to see the list. In it, select the line you need. For a flash drive, this is a USB-HDD.

You should press Enter, and signs will appear that this is Windows. Unique windows modified by wave deformation in a graphic editor.

If the installer was made by a Microsoft utility, then there simply cannot be any problems at this stage. The windows will appear anyway. As a last resort, you should install Windows 10 on the USB flash drive again. The first dialogue asks you to select the time and language. Most users don't need it at all.

Selecting a distribution

The next screen is no more interesting. But in its lower left corner there is a small mark Restoration. This is for those who pick up their system unit after a fall. Behind the link are powerful tools, including a command line for controlling your computer. The next screen will ask us to enter the key. Owners of previous versions will not be able to do this, therefore, they must select I don’t have...

Now is the time to select the installation package. In our case, the media was created for two types of operating systems, because nothing else was required. The Microsoft utility (Media Creation Tool) asks which options to download from the server.

Click Next, and the display will show information about the installed hard drive. Every admin knows that this is the most delicate moment. Seven was often capricious at this point, and I had to reinstall and boot 10 times. Ten does not do this, so the installation instructions are greatly simplified. We skip the screen with the license agreement, because there is no point in rejecting the offer of the Good Corporation.

As you can see, we are asked about how to install Windows 10 from a flash drive:

  • From scratch.
  • On top of the existing version, preserving all files and parameters.

It is clear that the second method is safer, and most of the population chooses it. Only some strange virus in the system can become an obstacle, but this is already in the category of unusual things. In any case, it will be possible to make some changes to the hard drive if required.

Working with a hard drive

The hard drive will appear in all its glory, but only simple operations are available. In Windows 10, some of the prohibitions have been removed, which will please many Microsoft fans. No more complaints about the hardware that so bothered 7 users.

For example, we used a hard drive that was not yet old, damaged by a virus, which erased the initial sectors to the point of failure and was registered somewhere on the sidelines of the tracks. However, we are confidently waiting to create it and ask for about 150 GB for the system. Why so much? Ten really loves free space and swap files. And if you decide to install the now free Express Studio, you will need a lot, a lot of space.

Please note that the brainchild of Billy Gates created a small subsection for his own needs. Do not touch it under any circumstances. To install, choose a hand-measured size (in our case, about 150 GB).

For complete order, you need to format it (the button is right there, under the window). No one will ask about the type of file system; this, of course, is NTFS. The latest versions of Windows do not function differently. The installation process will begin, occurring in fully automatic mode. There is no point in describing it.

Reinstallation

It happens that part of the operating system fails. And then a reinstallation is required, saving all files and parameters. It was said above how to do this. It remains to add that the utility will search for all instances of operating systems on the hard drive, and the main thing here is to choose the appropriate one. The good news is that after July 29, 2016, it will still be possible to put a ten on the system unit where it was already activated once. Information about this act remained in the depths of the Microsoft server.

Boot from USB

We have a separate topic about creating installation media. There are several options here:

  1. Download the official Microsoft Media Creation Tool.
  2. Use a third-party utility (wide list). In this case, you need to acquire a system image in advance (it can be created according to step 1, or purchased in a store).

That's all for today on how to install Windows 10 from a USB drive.

Fast method of installing Windows 10 from a flash drive

Hello, my dear readers! We are sure that many of you are interested in installing Windows 10 from a flash drive. This issue became relevant back in the summer of 2015, when users of Microsoft operating systems were faced with an “obsessive” offer to upgrade to a new version of the OS for free. In this guide, we will try to describe in as much detail as possible all stages of installation - from creating an image to the first launch.

The instructions are suitable not only for a USB drive, but also for disk media. Although, few people use disks these days. Do you agree?

Create a bootable USB flash drive

This is the very first stage, during which Windows 10 is installed on a flash drive. Microsoft has developed a free application specifically for this purpose (you can download it from this link). Please note that when downloading the utility, you should select the appropriate bit depth (x86 or x64), which must match the characteristics of the system installed on your PC or laptop.

After launching the program, you need to select the “Create installation media for another computer” option, specify the language settings and version of Windows 10. At this stage, you can select any bit depth (32 or 64 bits), but it is worth considering that for the x64 version to work comfortably on the computer, you must be at least 4 GB of RAM.

Next, you will be asked to select the media on which the files will be written. We strongly recommend using a USB flash drive, but if you prefer the “classic”, then check the “ISO file” checkbox to burn the image to disk:

Note. If you already have a downloaded image of “ten”, then you can create a bootable drive in any other way. For example, for UEFI, you can simply copy the image file to a flash drive, having previously formatted it in the FAT32 system. The UltraISO program (and similar ones) is suitable for this.

Getting ready for installation

If you are mentally prepared, then you should take care of the safety of personal data that may be lost during installation. Don't forget to transfer all important files from the system drive C (and the Desktop) to drive D or a removable drive (flash drive, tablet, etc.). This way you can protect memories of travel and other joyful moments of life from being ridiculously deleted. Unfortunately, many people ignore such warnings and then greatly regret what they have done. Yes, it is possible to use utilities to completely restore data, but they do not always work as we would like.

To start installing Windows 10 from a flash drive via BIOS, you must first boot from a removable drive. To do this, restart the computer and, without waiting for the OS to start, press the Del or F2 key (for a laptop). In the BIOS you need to find the item responsible for the boot order and put USB (or DVD) in first place.

In some cases (depending on the type of motherboard), when you start the PC, the Boot Menu may be available, in which you select the boot media.

After these manipulations, the following message should appear:

Press any key and begin an exciting journey!

Installation process

Soon a window will appear on the screen in which you need to specify the language parameters and currency format:

Pretty simple, right? But there were times when installing Windows required a lot of experience and could only be done by “enlightened gurus.” Now everything has changed, and even an ordinary user can easily download a new OS by following simple step-by-step instructions.

The following window may be confusing, but we will show you the right choice:

  1. If you purchased a Windows 10 license, then simply enter the key indicated on the box or received by email in the field.
  2. If you used the free update option, having first downloaded all the necessary updates, then you need to select the “Skip” option.
  3. If the update was not performed and you prefer a “clean” installation, then you should interrupt the process, log into your operating system and update it. This will avoid activation problems in the future.
  4. If all of the above points do not suit you, then indicate “I don’t have a key” and the installation will continue. But your OS version will not be activated. After some time, you will be shown reminders, and after 30 days the system may be blocked.

After clicking the “Next” button, you should read the agreement and accept its terms (if everything suits you). We are sure that 99% of users never read this text and simply check the appropriate box. How are you doing?

In the next window you have to decide. You can update while saving all files and programs. In this case, the previous version of the system will be moved to the Windows.old folder. But we would recommend “Custom Installation”, which will clear the system disk and allow you to redistribute (split) the drive into parts:

The first point does not require much explanation. After selecting, you will have to wait a little while the installer copies the files and configures the “top ten”. During this time, you can drink coffee or tea and play a little on your tablet. Although, if you use a high-speed SSD drive, the update will happen very quickly.

New installation

How to clean install Windows 10 from a USB flash drive? Let's consider this option in more detail. When you are asked: “Where do you want to install...?”, you should look around carefully before clicking “Next”:

  1. The window may display several disks of different sizes. Some laptop manufacturers embed the recovery image into the hard drive. This partition takes up from 10 to 20 GB. There is no need to delete it. It may be useful if you need to return to the factory state. "Small" partitions are reserved by the installer. They should also be left.
  2. To install, you should select a partition that matches your disk (you can calculate it by the total size, if you know it). What should I do if Windows cannot be installed on this partition? Most likely there is not enough space on it (less than 14 GB). This problem can be solved simply: select the desired disk and click on the “Format” item. This will completely clear the partition without affecting other drives.
  3. If there is enough space and you do not want to format, then the previous version of the OS will be saved in the Windows.old directory. It is possible to remove it, but sometimes it is not easy. We would recommend getting rid of this “garbage” immediately, even at the time of installation.
  4. Want to change disk sizes? Have you transferred all important information to removable media? Then select all sections in turn and click on the “Delete” item. When you have one unallocated area, the size of which corresponds to the full capacity of the hard drive, select the “Create” item and specify the new partition size. You can create as many of them as you like (at your discretion). But you should allocate at least 50 GB for the system (for updates, installing programs and the swap file).

Copying files

When you click “Next”, the copying process starts, which we cannot influence in any way (except perhaps by unplugging the power cord from the outlet))). When finished, the system will reboot. And for the installation to continue, you must disconnect the flash drive (remove the disk). Otherwise, it will boot from the media, but we don’t need this, because all the necessary files have already been copied to the hard drive.

All you have to do is wait for the preparation and installation of components and updates to take place. It will take 10-15 minutes, no more. Sometimes the image may disappear or flicker. Don't be alarmed - the video driver is being configured. In the next window, we recommend clicking the “Use standard settings” button. If you want to disable some functions, click on “Settings”.

And here it is, the long-awaited moment! The last installer window that says "This won't take long." On “fast” PCs the process will take 2-3 minutes. And on low-power systems, the final setup can take up to 30-40 minutes.

The appearance of the Desktop is a sign that the installation is complete. And for those who did not manage to update on time, all is not lost, read the article on how to upgrade to Windows 10 after July 29 for free.

Congratulations! Now you know how to install Windows from a Windows 10 flash drive (and here is an article about a clean installation of Windows 10 from a HDD). If you still have questions after reading this instruction, feel free to ask them in the comments. We will help you in any way we can!

Sincerely, Victor

How to install Windows 10 from a flash drive (USB drive)

As you know, many modern laptops no longer have a DVD drive. In addition, installing Windows from a USB drive is much faster than from an optical drive. Therefore, this article specifically describes step-by-step instructions for you on how to install Windows 10 from a bootable USB flash drive.

Recording to a USB flash drive

In this article, we talked in detail about how to create bootable media with a fresh distribution of Windows 10. And here we describe how to legally download an image of the desired edition of Windows 10 from the Microsoft website and immediately create a bootable USB media.

Booting from a flash drive

The easiest way is to call the Boot menu when you boot your computer and select the USB flash drive as the source.

For example, this is how it looks in Award BIOS - you need to select USB-ZIP:

And so on an HP laptop - just select the flash drive by name:

If the flash drive does not appear in the menu, enter the BIOS and make sure the following options are enabled:

  • USB-HDD
  • Legacy support
  • External device boot

Read more about booting from a flash drive here.

After choosing to boot from a USB drive, you should see the message Press any key to boot from CD or DVD... and press any key as quickly as possible:

If after this the Windows logo appears on a black background, then the installation program has started downloading and you did everything correctly:

So, after successfully loading from a USB drive, we begin the actual process of installing Windows 10 from a flash drive, in which your direct participation will be required.

Now Install:

Check the I accept the license terms and then Next again:

If your hard drive is completely empty, you can simply click Next. The boot and system partitions will be created automatically in this case. And later you can divide the system disk into two partitions, if necessary.

If the hard drive contains the necessary information, format only the boot (100 MB or 350 MB) and system partitions, and leave the rest alone.

There is no need to delete individual sections!

If there are partitions on the disk without important information, we advise you to delete them all and repartition the disk. By the way, it is advisable to allocate at least 100 GB for the system. There is no need to create a 350 MB boot partition manually! Otherwise, you will end up with two such batches. The fact is that the installation program will one way or another create one itself.

After this, the installation process will start and all you have to do is wait:

On this screen you can configure some settings or select standard settings:

Click Continue or Continue:

Enter your username, password, password confirmation, and hint. After that, click Next or Next:

How to install Windows 10 from a USB flash drive

So, have you decided to refresh your personal device with the brand new “Windows 10” instead of “seven” or “eight”? No problem, you can do it without difficulty, you don’t need to create any additional subsections. We simply create a bootable USB flash drive, then format the system partition of your hard drive and effortlessly install the operating system on your device. The system requirements are not high, similar to the “seven”.

Create a bootable USB flash drive to install Windows 10

The Windows 10 image takes up about 4 GB of free space, so it is better to take a flash drive of 8 GB or more. It is also necessary to take into account that all available information from your storage device will be deleted. There are many programs to perform this procedure. The best option would be the Rufus program. The utility is in Russian, download and launch. Next, in the “Device” section, you need to select a flash drive.

  • Using the appropriate button, select your image file.
  • Set the remaining parameters and press the “Start” button.
  • The system warns that the data will be destroyed, we agree.
  • After finishing mounting the image, press the “Close” button.
  • The bootable USB flash drive has been created. Next, we’ll figure out what needs to be done to start from it. To do this, set the computer to reboot and visit the blue BIOS screen.

To enter the BIOS immediately after starting the computer, press “F2” or “Del” on the keyboard, depending on your device model. In our case, press “F2” and go to the “Boot” item. Using the F6 button, move the flash drive to the very top. If you are unable to enter the BIOS, I recommend reading the article “How to enter the BIOS settings.”

  • Now the flash drive is placed in the first place when loading. Press “F10” to save the settings.
  • Next, restart the computer. Almost immediately after the reboot, “press any key to boot from...” will appear on the screen in English. This means that to boot from the drive you need to press any key.
  • Now the drive menu is loaded, where we select the required section “Install Windows 10”.
  • Select the hard drive partition you need and click on the “Format” button.
  • The hard drive partition is formatted, then click on the “Next” button.
