Positioning

In the line from Nokia, the Nokia 2 model is currently the simplest, it opens the model range. But it is impossible to call this device the most inexpensive on the market, there is no shortage of offers in the 120 euro segment, and Nokia found a win-win option when they decided to choose a set of characteristics that have proven themselves in models from other companies and achieve the right price/quality ratio. Such models have a large, capacious battery and fairly typical, minimal characteristics.

For the consumer, Nokia 2 is a device with a long battery life, which is aimed at those who make a lot of calls and play few or no games. This is an excellent choice for those people who want to charge their phone less often, rarely watch movies and do not spend time on the Internet constantly. That is, social networks and calls are the main use of the device. And in this capacity, Nokia 2 fully justifies its positioning. Moreover, in the case of Nokia 2, we also see a good design of the case, which can ensure continuous use for several years. But you can expect updates to new versions of Android only in theory (most likely Android Go), since the hardware characteristics of the model are modest.

Design, dimensions, control elements

By modern standards, when the market is dominated by smartphones with a diagonal of 5.5 inches and above, Nokia 2 looks like a compact device: dimensions - 143.5x71.3x9.3 mm, weight - 161 grams. A small smartphone that fits well in the hand. The aluminum frame, removable back cover with a matte finish - all this creates the impression of an expensive device, which this model from HMD Global cannot be called. In my opinion, this is a good example of the use of materials, the smartphone turned out to be very nice for its price category, often they simply offer a plastic case, and such models look cheap. Nothing similar can be said about Nokia 2.

The device is available in several colors, you can see them in the photo.

The downside of the matte cover is that it rubs off quite easily. Such covers are not sold separately, so, oddly enough, the most durable device will be white, the cover will definitely not be shiny. It is possible that the service will be able to purchase the cover separately; I can’t even imagine the cost, but it is unlikely to be low.

On the right side there is an on/off key and a paired volume key. At the bottom end there is a microUSB connector and a microphone, the second microphone is at the top end, there is also a 3.5 mm jack.

Under the cover you can see two slots for nanoSIM cards, as well as a separate slot for microSD. Depending on the market, the model may come with one SIM card slot. In Russia, this is a dual-SIM option.

The glass covering the screen is recessed into the body; the frames protrude slightly, but this does not create any flaws in the ergonomics; your finger cannot feel the edge of the screen. On the back of the device you can see the camera with flash and the main speaker. On the front panel above the screen is the front camera.

The bottom line is that the Nokia 2 is well built in its price class and the device does not cause any complaints. I like the fact that it has a cool design and body at a fairly affordable price point.

Display

Screen 5 inches, LTPS, 1280x720 pixels, 16:9, 294 ppi, automatic brightness adjustment, Corning Gorilla Glass 3. Minimum settings, maximum brightness can be turned on (in automatic mode the backlight level increases for better readability outdoors). I like the quality of the screen, it's not bad and provides readability both indoors and outdoors. By today's standards, the screen is small, although five years ago 5 inches was considered a large screen. You can watch video on such a video, but it’s not as comfortable as on large smartphones, but it all depends on your habits.

The oleophobic coating is good, which is important, since people usually save on it in this segment. And the presence of Corning Gorilla Glass 3 is a plus for the phone. For those who will choose this device for older people, I note that you can enable larger font sizes, then readability will increase, and this also makes the device interesting for this audience.

Battery

Built-in Li-Ion battery with a capacity of 4100 mAh. Unfortunately, HMD Global does not even indicate approximate operating modes and the expected time in each of them with a fully charged battery. Therefore, we can only focus on the results that we obtained in practice. So, at maximum brightness, playing unconverted HD video in MX Player will give approximately 8 hours of work. This is a good result for an IPS matrix; there are no records, but there are no failures either.

When using the device for calls for an hour, browsing the web, communicating in instant messengers and social networks, it lasts for two full days. In this case, the screen backlight was set to 60%; with automatic backlight adjustment, the operating time did not change much. The total screen operating time was about 4.5 hours, the volume of transferred data was about 600 MB.

The battery charging time using standard charging (fast charging is not supported, wireless is also not supported) is about 4.5 hours. There are no special power saving settings, only the one that is present as standard in Android and can be activated when the charge reaches 15%. In a word, this device is quite superior in this aspect.

For those who use a smartphone only for calls and occasionally browse the web, the operating time will easily be 4-5 days. These are very realistic numbers in this scenario.

Chipset, memory, memory cards, performance

One of the main complaints is the small amount of RAM of 1 GB; it is not enough for “heavy” games and modern applications, so slowdowns may be noticeable in operation, although they are not critical and you can get used to them, it all depends on your previous experience. There are no miracles, and the small amount of internal memory of 8 GB can also be interpreted as a drawback, since it runs out quickly, especially if you use a large number of additional applications. In many ways, the ease of use of the device directly depends on how you use it, on your scenarios.

Snapdragon 212 chipset, 4 Cortex-A7 cores with a frequency of up to 1.3 GHz, Adreno 304 graphics processor. There are no records in synthetic tests, everything is predictable, and the numbers are far from average for modern smartphones, which is explained by the budget nature of this device.

Communication capabilities

A budget solution, and that says it all, there is no USB Type C (it’s a few pennies more expensive), just a regular microUSB. There is no second band for Wi-Fi, which immediately makes you hostage to good Internet and absent neighbors transmitting a lot of data over their Wi-Fi networks. LTE cat.4 supported.

Cameras

The front camera is 5 megapixels, without any special features, very budget-friendly, the image quality is appropriate.

The main camera is 8 megapixels, it works slowly and very slowly, sometimes it takes up to 5-7 seconds from the moment of start to the ability to take a photo. The quality of the images leaves much to be desired, the device cannot boast of anything here, the interface is familiar to HMD Global devices.
