Looking at the modern smartphone market, we can say with confidence that phablets have almost sunk into oblivion. Their dawn in 2013 and rapid fading popularity scared many manufacturers away from producing truly huge smartphones. Yes, some companies are still trying to experiment with screen diagonal, but not everyone succeeds. Has Xiaomi managed to reincarnate its once successful Mi Max? We'll find out during the review.

Contents of delivery

Xiaomi Mi Max 2 comes in a minimalistic white cardboard package with a small but bright company logo. The front side of the box also indicates the device version (number of gigabytes of RAM and internal memory).

Inside are the Mi Max 2 itself, a small instruction manual in the form of images, a clip for removing the combined tray, a white USB Type-C cable and a white power supply.

Appearance

The matte monolithic body without a hint of sharp edges immediately attracts the eye. Xiaomi designers did not come up with something new and ambiguous, but simply abandoned the general ideas for the appearance of the latest smartphones from the Redmi line and received a pleasant product as a result. Yes, in appearance there are “echoes” of the design of the iPhone 7, but this does not harm Xiaomi Mi Max 2.

The front of the smartphone is completely covered with today's standard 2.5D glass with an oleophobic coating, which does not always cope with the task of keeping the glass clean, but provides a pleasant tactile sensation when in use.

Above the huge screen, which measures more than 6 inches, there is a front camera, light sensors and a speaker. The downside was an atavism that came from previous devices from the Chinese manufacturer - physical navigation buttons. With such body sizes, their placement becomes a matter of safe use of the smartphone and overall convenience. The most successful solution would be to use a navigation bar. The same as in the frameless Mi Mix.

The back of the new phablet from Xiaomi is made of high-quality processed metal. In addition to the standard camera and flash, a very fast fingerprint scanner is in its native place for Xiaomi smartphones.

The top edge of the smartphone received a now rather rare infrared sensor, which allows you to control household appliances in the house, and a 3.5 mm port. There is nothing new on the right side: a volume rocker and a power key. The slot for memory cards and SIM cards live on the other side.

The lower part of the device, in addition to the Type-C port, received two speaker grilles. At least that's what it might seem at first glance. Only one grille is used to protect the speaker. The second is to protect the microphone. Moreover, there is more than one speaker in a smartphone. Another one is activated when using the smartphone in landscape mode, and it is located above the display.

Display

Xiaomi has always tried to put high-quality IPS display modules in its devices, and the new phablet is no exception. Six and a half inches of bright and high-quality images in a package that is not the largest for this class of device.

Choosing Full HD resolution with such a diagonal is the right step, because the image does not suffer from this, and the battery life is only pleasing.

The colors are not oversaturated, the contrast is normal, and the resolution is sufficient for all tasks. There is no air gap between the glass and the top layer of the display, so the image looks acceptable even from fairly large viewing angles. Color distortion is still slightly present, but only when looking at the display from the right side.

The brightness is a little weak in direct sunlight, but this is not particularly critical. In a slightly darker place, even small text can be read.

Software and OS

The operating system is Xiaomi's own MIUI 8 firmware, standard, running on Google's Android 7.0 Nougat. The firmware version is global, no problems with localization or services from the search giant. You can use your smartphone right away, just by taking it out of the box.

MIUI provides users with a fairly clear and minimalistic interface, which looks much nicer than “slightly” modified firmware icons based on “pure” Android.

However, not everything is as good as it might seem at first. Some of the branded features that were added to Android 7.1.1 have not yet found a place in MIUI. For example, there is no way to change the DPI setting. Even if the user manages to do this by resorting to modifying system files, this will result in graphical artifacts in SystemUI. The firmware also does not have the ability to use two application windows at the same time, although it would be most convenient on the Mi Max 2 with its diagonal. Fortunately, the next update to MIUI 9 should bring this feature to the phablet.

Performance

The Chinese are very fond of the Qualcomm Snapdragon 625 platform, introduced in 2015, so you shouldn’t be surprised that they installed it in the Mi Max 2. The processor performance, combined with 4 GB of RAM, is enough for all everyday tasks.

In synthetic tests, the smartphone showed the following results.

Heavy and simple games run on the characteristics automatically selected by the system without any complaints. The number of frames does not drop, however, sometimes “ladders” appear, but this was noticed only in Need For Speed: No Limits.

4 GB of RAM saves MIUI from being excessively gluttonous in terms of RAM consumption. With standard use of the smartphone, about 800 MB remain free. But applications are not unloaded, and if this happens, it is only when the device is heavily loaded.

Fingerprint's scanner

The phablet has a fast fingerprint sensor that quickly and almost without false positives unlocks the device. There are no long transition animations from the lock screen to the desktop. Pressed - unlocked. Yes, the speed, of course, is not the same as that of the OnePlus 3T, but it is also impressive. By the way, false positives do not occur in the scanner’s pocket.

Through a special menu in the smartphone settings, you can additionally assign actions for pressing the scanner. For example, it can be used as a shutter button, which is especially convenient with such dimensions when taking a selfie.

Camera

Surprisingly, Xiaomi Mi Max 2 is equipped with the same camera sensor as the company's flagship Mi6. True, with a number of limitations that cannot reveal its full potential. It's a pity.

Firstly, this is not such high-quality optics and the aperture value is equal to f/2.2. There is less light coming in, image processing algorithms have to slightly “stretch” the image to a normal result. Secondly, there are software limitations that seriously limit the smoothness of setting shooting parameters. Although there is a professional mode with the ability to manually focus, adjust shutter speed, and change photosensitivity, there is no option to shoot in RAW in this firmware. Therefore, there can be no question of high-quality editing of the resulting images.

The Xiaomi Mi Max 2's manual camera mode allows you to highlight focus areas with a specific color. Both semi-professional and professional cameras. This is definitely a plus for macro shooters.

HDR works well, without greatly stretching the shadows in the pictures. The result is a slightly more dramatic image, nothing more. This is good for beginners who don't want to think about post-processing the image.

In the dark, the camera's automation makes the image grainy, setting the ISO much higher than normal for such conditions and reducing the shutter speed. Fortunately, in automatic mode this is not so critical.

In daytime conditions there are no problems with pictures. Contrast is normal, white balance is also selected adequately. True, the camera sometimes does not process black colors very well, automatically increasing their brightness.

The front camera is just right for taking selfies. The resolution of the front sensor is 5 MP, which makes the pictures quite detailed. There is a function to improve skin tone. Therefore, you can post photos taken on Mi Max 2 from social networks without shame.

Connection

Unfortunately, these improvements have led to an increase in the price of the smartphone. For this reason, you should do your research carefully before purchasing.

This year is distinguished by the appearance of frameless smartphones, so it cannot be said that the frames here are particularly thin. Despite this, the screen to body size ratio is a high 74.13%.

Compared to the previous generation, the build quality has been improved. This year's model is larger and heavier, but at the same time it has a more premium feel and the device is more comfortable to hold in the hand thanks to a metal monolithic body with rounded corners. The power and volume buttons feel solid and responsive.

The fingerprint scanner is reliable and fast, a connector has appeared. Overall, I liked the design of the Mi Max 2, but keep in mind that devices of this size are not suitable for everyone.

Screen

The device has a huge LCD screen with a resolution of 1080 x 1920, a pixel density of 342 ppi, which is a good value. There are also good viewing angles and the screen is not as glarey as in the first generation smartphone, but the maximum brightness has decreased and is 496 nits, which is a good indicator. However, visibility in the sun is not the strongest point of this device.

Due to the color temperature of 7500K, most colors have a blue tint, but the situation is still better than in the original Mi Max, where the screen was even cooler. For a device priced around $300, the screen is not bad.

Interface and performance

This smartphone uses Xiaomi MIUI 8.5 shell on top of Android 7.1.1. The system is very similar to iOS, while possessing a number of exceptional functionality.

For example, the Dual Apps feature allows you to run two instances of the same application at the same time, like WhatsApp or Viber. If you want to use your smartphone with one hand, there is a separate operating mode and a Quick Ball function for this. There is also a Themes application for customizing the appearance of the device. At the same time, there is no possibility of splitting the screen between two programs, which is strange on such a large smartphone. I would like to believe that it will appear in future software updates.

In terms of performance, many may be disappointed as it only uses the Snapdragon 625 processor instead of the Snapdragon 652 in last year's model. It is less powerful, but is created on a more advanced 14 nm process technology. Games and applications will run slower, but less energy will be consumed.

Despite this, there should be no problems in everyday tasks; navigation through the interface is usually smooth, not counting searches in the settings. Depending on the number of search results, there may be a 2-4 second delay before they are displayed.

There are two versions of the smartphone available, with storage capacity of 64 GB and 128 GB, both have support for microSD memory cards. The amount of RAM is 4 GB.

Cameras

The only rear camera has a resolution of 12 megapixels and f/2.2 aperture, and a dual LED flash is used. The front camera resolution is 5 MP. This seems like a step back since last year the rear camera was 16MP with f/2.0 aperture, but in practice this is not the case. The developers increased the pixel size of the main camera from 1 micron to 1.25 microns and, as a result, the photographs became better.

We managed to get excellent pictures even in not the best daylight. Exposure levels are generally good and color reproduction is fairly accurate. Digital noise can be noticeable in dark photos, but the Night Scene mode helps improve sharpness.

The camera app launches and works quickly, and there is a wide selection of shooting modes and filters. As for the front camera, it takes good photos, but you need to turn off the beautification mode.

Video recording

Video recording on Mi Max 2 is not amazing. It's nice to be able to shoot at 4K resolution, but autofocus is unreliable and the lack of optical stabilization results in shake.

Multimedia

The device is well suited for games, watching videos, and full-fledged movies, which is helped by the large screen. This time Xiaomi used stereo speakers. The lower one is responsible for bass and low frequencies, the built-in earpiece is responsible for mids and high frequencies. The sound comes out clear and loud enough.

Call quality and communication

The speaker in the ear is loud, there were no problems with telephone conversations. You can easily hear the voice of your interlocutor. For users in Europe, LTE frequency bands 3 and 7 are supported.

As for communication standards, there are no , so the payment system does not work here. Hybrid bays allow you to install two SIM cards or one SIM card and one microSD. There are Bluetooth 4.2, GPS, the latest versions of the Wi-Fi standard.

Autonomous operation

The battery is one of the main advantages of this smartphone, as its capacity is 5300 mAh. Together with a processor that is not the most productive, this ensures record operating time.

In tests with the screen on, the device lasted 17 hours and 22 minutes. He beat the previous X Power champion by 2 hours. For comparison, the iPhone 7 lasts 7 hours 46 minutes, Galaxy S8 8 hours 22 minutes. The Mi Max 2 will last two days without any problems, and if you rarely touch it, it will last three to four days.

The charger supports the Qualcomm Quick Charge 3.0 standard, which allows you to spend 2 hours 15 minutes on recharging from zero to 100%.

Conclusion

The competition in the mid-priced device market is the most serious, but Xiaomi Mi Max 2 was able to stand out. This is not a device for everyone, but it will appeal to those who can handle its size. The strengths here are build quality, adequate performance, good cameras, suitability for multimedia content and exceptional battery life.

Although there are shortcomings here, they are redeemed by the price of 16,500 rubles. for the 64 GB version (according to Yandex Market). It has few competitors in this category.

If you do not feel discomfort from such a large smartphone size and limited manufacturer support, we can safely recommend the device for purchase.

pros

  • Build quality;
  • Good cameras;
  • Excellent autonomy;
  • Large nice screen;
  • Reliable fingerprint scanner.

Minuses

  • Large size is not suitable for everyone;
  • There is no protection against water;
  • Limited network support in Western countries;
  • Video recording quality is not the best;
  • There is no split screen between two applications.

Xiaomi Mi Max 2 arrives in a white box made of thick cardboard, traditionally made in a minimalist style. Model name, logo, memory option, that's it. Inside, the user will find a startup guide, a charger, a USB Type C cable, and (obviously) the phone itself. Modest and neat, which does not mean, of course, that it is bad. But let's focus on the smartphone itself.

So, Xiaomi Mi Max 2 lies very comfortably in the hand, despite the fact that it has a screen with a diagonal of almost 6.5 inches. The phone does not slip out, the weight (211 grams) combined with a thin and metal body does the job.

The 6.44" IPS panel displays images in Full HD resolution. This gives a density of 342 ppi. Unfortunately, the display colors seem cool and slightly shabby. However, a plus should be given for good viewing angles. Even with large deviations, there are problems with reading There is no content on the display, and the colors are distorted quite a bit.

The phablet runs on the Android 7 .1.1 operating system on MIUI 9 in a stable version.

Housing and its design

As for the design, Xiaomi Mi Max 2 looks like an enlarged version of Xiaomi Mi 5x/Mi A1. The only differences (besides the size and the fact that the model came out a few months later, of course) are the camera module and the relocation of the audio jack to the top of the phone.

In the place where the audio jack was located, holes were added for the second speaker. But there’s no second speaker - a microphone is installed instead.

The body is made of aluminum. The left side has a tray for two SIM cards (micro and nano) or microSD and microSIM cards. This is a hybrid slot and both cards work in standby mode. On the right side there are built-in lock and volume buttons.

For many, the big disadvantage will be the use of 2.5 D glass on the display, that is, with curved edges. The fact is that the search for suitable protective glass (or installation) may not result in the expected effect. Despite using fourth-generation Gorilla Glass and carrying the phone in a case, when testing the phablet, a small scratch appeared in the lower left corner. Also after just 1 month of use there are tiny chips in the paintwork around the USB Type C port (sadly it's still USB 2.0).

Despite its large dimensions (174x88x7.60 mm), Xiaomi Mi Max 2 does not seem too massive. But holding it with one hand, much less performing any operations at the same time, is very difficult.

Efficiency

When testing, the Xiaomi Mi Max 2 did not allow us to particularly notice large differences in performance, but this does not mean that they did not happen. Three or four times the phone froze briefly. It also happened that the application required a reboot.

Fortunately, the smartphone has enough RAM (up to 4 GB) and energy - in this regard, the smartphone works perfectly. Even with a fairly high load, the phone does not heat up. In fact, this is to be expected - it has a Qualcomm Snapdragon 625 processor.

In AnTuTu, Xiaomi Mi Max 2 scores 57,550 points - this is a good result for a gadget in this category. In terms of performance, it can be compared with the flagship devices of 2015.

Camera and multimedia

Unfortunately, the camera of this smartphone leaves much to be desired, which is actually nothing new in the budget products of this Chinese brand. The Sony matrix has big problems with focusing (macro photography practically does not work, although the Xiaomi Mi Max 2 will be able to photograph text). When the focus switches to distant objects, there is a lot of noise and blurry pixels in the pictures. The effect is even worse in low light.

The front camera is similar to the main one - it is also not of high quality. But many will say to this - just install the Google Camera application. Then it turns out that Xiaomi cameras differ only in that they have weak software support.

Sound

It must be admitted that even one speaker, which is equipped with Xiaomi Mi Max 2, works very well. The sound is clear and loud. Pairs well with a large display, making this large smartphone from Xiaomi a good solution for watching movies.

A plus for music lovers may be additional options for customizing the sound for the headphones used and assigning function buttons.

Xiaomi Mi Max 2 as a tool for everyday work

A large screen may be bulky for some, but it also has many positive qualities. Of course, it is worth evaluating the convenience of browsing web pages - the Internet on a large display is always much more convenient than its compact version.

Another use for this smartphone will be for students who can use the phone to watch multimedia presentations. Also, Xiaomi Mi Max 2 will be appreciated by drivers who need a phone suitable as a navigator - a large display, loud speaker, and long battery life will do their job. You just need to find a suitable holder.

As for the quality of calls, as well as for the phone’s operation on the LTE network (the smartphone operates in the LTE B20 band), there are no comments. It's worth repeating that the phone supports dual SIM cards in standby mode.

The battery is the biggest surprise

Batteries are not the strong point of smartphones, and this has been known for many years. The trend of minimizing the weight of phones has a negative impact on battery capacity. Compared to smartphones 3-4 years old, of course there is a big improvement and 2 days of continuous use is no longer a miracle.

What would you say about charging the battery every 3 days? And here we are not talking about saving mode or switching to airplane mode. This refers to daily use (including Facebook, Messenger, LTE networks, navigation and some games in the background). Yes, it's possible - Xiaomi Mi Max 2 will allow you to do it.

An additional advantage is the manufacturer’s use of Quick Charge 3.0 technology. Despite the large battery capacity, in just 1 hour the gadget is charged to almost 70%.

Summary

In general, Xiaomi Mi Max 2 is a bright representative of its category - despite the large diagonal, the device does not seem massive. The stylish design of the smartphone will appeal to many fans of the brand, and its performance will delight gamers.

Cameras, of course, are not a feature of this model, but their quality is quite enough for the average user (given that you can use various applications to improve the quality of pictures). 4 GB of RAM, a 5300 mAh battery with fast charging, a fingerprint scanner, Android 7 out of the box - all this makes the Xiaomi Mi Max 2 a good Chinese compromise.
