Optimizing Windows 10 to improve laptop performance

Good day everyone!

In Windows 10, unlike previous operating systems, a special gaming mode has appeared (it is designed to improve computer performance in games). I note that you can find this “thing” in a version no lower than Windows 10 Creators Update...

Because I quite often receive questions regarding games (and problems with them), I think that a note on how to enable this mode and how to use it would be very helpful. Moreover, in some cases, using the game mode it is possible to increase the number of FPS by 10-15%! (just a few clicks of the mouse (without doing anything else), agree, useful?!).

In addition to this article, I highly recommend reading this one: (it lists the main reasons why games can slow down, even on new powerful PCs).

Now to the point...

Enabling Game Mode

And so, first you need to open Windows settings (you can use START, as in the screenshot below, or you can use the Win+i button combination).

Then go to the "Game Mode" tab. Here you need to check that it is enabled and supported (as in the example below). If you have Windows version 1703 or 1709, then you will have a switch that should be turned on.

Add your game to the list of applications (the "Browse" button), and then set its settings to high performance (example below). This is especially true if you have 2 video cards (integrated and discrete) - this way the game will run on the discrete card.

Well, the last point that needs to be checked and configured is the game menu. By default, the buttons to call this menu Win+G(but you can specify your own). It allows you to enable game mode, take screenshots, record videos, enable broadcasts, etc.

How to use Game Mode

Very simple! Launch some game and press the Win+G button combination (or the ones you specified in the previous step).

You should see a small panel appear at the bottom of the screen. On its right side there will be a button to turn on the game mode - just click on it (number 2 in the screenshot below).

In general, it’s that simple!

Personal notes on whether the game is worth the candle:

  1. The game mode does not always increase the number of FPS (but in general, it has a positive effect: some half-second freezes may disappear during dynamic episodes of the game, for example);
  2. if you have a powerful gaming PC (laptop) and no programs other than the game are running, then the game mode will have virtually no effect on performance;
  3. if you have a budget device (for example, only with an integrated video card), then the game mode can increase the number of FPS by 10-15%;
  4. game mode can significantly speed up the game if you have many processes running, some third-party programs, etc.;
  5. when you exit the game, this mode will be automatically stopped (there is no need to do this manually all the time).

What else to pay attention to:

1) About Turbo Boost

If you have a modern laptop with an Intel i3, i5, i7 processor, then it does not always work at its full performance. The fact is that in order to save battery power, Turbo Boost technology is not always used (note: processor self-overclocking*) . To check if it works for you and how to enable it, check out this material:

2) About FPS

To increase the number of FPS in a game, the game mode alone is often not enough. For example, in addition to this, you can configure the video card driver, the game itself accordingly, remove excess garbage from the system (and other actions) - and, as a result, get an increase of 30-40% (sometimes more!).

All these actions are described in the article "How to increase FPS: methods from a gamer" -

Additions on the topic are welcome...

Good game!

How to speed up Windows 10 if your computer is slow? Optimization Tips

“Ten” began to treacherously slow down after just a few months? Don't rush to reinstall anything. In this guide, we will explain in detail how to speed up Windows 10 on a computer or laptop without reinstalling.

Optimizing Windows 10: cleaning startup

One of the serious obstacles that most often slows down Windows 10 are programs that automatically start with the OS. Because of them, the computer takes longer to boot, and overall performance is seriously affected. And the most interesting thing is that most people don’t even know about these programs: there is zero benefit, but resources are used.

We described a lot of important information on optimizing Windows in our article “Optimizing Windows XP”

Disabling everything unnecessary in startup is one of the reliable ways to speed up Win 10. What do you need for this?

How to understand what the system really needs to work, and what wastes memory? The easiest way is to google each of the “suspicious” programs: most likely, 90% of them are at least not necessary for you. Often autorun is full of unnecessary software from the PC or laptop manufacturer, hidden adware or even spyware.

What exactly can you turn off?

  • Cloud storage(so, in the case of “ten”, OneDrive is automatically “registered” in startup).
  • uTorrent, MediaGet and other programs for downloading - when you need them, run them separately. In addition, the constant distribution of torrents significantly slows down Windows of any version.
  • Official software, which was loaded by default when installing a scanner, printer or MFP. You are unlikely to use it exactly, but the devices will work fine as is.
To optimize Windows 10, we only clean startup; the programs themselves will remain on the computer. So you can run any of them manually if necessary.

We turn off services that load the system “idlely”

Developers cannot predict which services you will need. Therefore, the entire array automatically starts along with the OS. To speed up Windows 10 on a laptop or computer, it is useful to find unnecessary services that you personally do not need and turn them off.

What to turn off and what is better not to touch? There are many lists floating around the Internet, but we will focus on those services that can be turned off with virtually no risk. Let's start with the most "gluttonous".

  • Update Center - it is better to periodically update the system manually.
  • Windows Search - if you rarely search for something on your computer.

These services can be safely removed if the computer is not connected to a public network:

  • KtmRm for distributed transaction coordinator.
  • Offline files.
  • IPSec Policy Agent.
  • Computer browser.
  • NetBIOS support module.
  • Server Network service.

The task of these services has already been taken over by the antivirus:

  • Firewall.
  • Windows Defender.

These are useless in 99% of cases, but they can slow down Windows 10 significantly:

  • Adaptive brightness control.
  • IP Ancillary Service.
  • Secondary login.
  • Client for tracking changed connections.
  • IPsec key modules for Internet key exchange and authenticated IP.
  • SSDP detection.
  • Parental Control.
  • Error Logging Service.
  • Remote registry.

Leave these only if you are using devices that correspond to them:

  • Smart card.
  • Fax machine.
  • Print manager - for the printer.
  • Image download service (WIA) - for scanners and photographic equipment.
  • Bluetooth support - hardly anyone uses bluetooth anymore.
  • Tablet PC input service - if you don't use handwriting input.
  • Basic TPM services - if there are no BitLocker or TMP based monitoring devices.

How to disable the service?

Double-click on it and in the window that appears, in the “Startup type” line, set “Disabled” / then “Apply” or “OK”.

We carry out “cleaning” among the installed software

It is worth keeping only the software that you really need on your laptop or PC - removing unnecessary programs will significantly speed up your computer on Windows 10.

You will feel the effect immediately. The result in optimizing Windows 10 is especially noticeable if a fair amount of “junk” has accumulated among the installed software. And this is what happens most often if you don’t monitor it separately.

Cleaning junk files from drive C (system)

Over the course of months of operation, any OS accumulates a fair amount of “junk” system files. To speed up Windows 10, we recommend removing them periodically.

Cleaning your hard drive from unnecessary files (our own)

If you have a capacious hard drive of several terabytes, and there is still a lot of free space on it, you do not need this advice. But if the computer is old and the hard drive is “full to the brim,” this can greatly slow down Windows. If there is less than 20-30 percent of free space left, problems with performance are almost guaranteed.

Of course, all this takes time, but with a small and cluttered hard drive, the effort is worth it: every 5-10% freed up will help significantly speed up your Windows 10 PC.

  1. How to approach the matter? Slowly. Look through all the files on your computer: you will probably find a lot of incomprehensible archives and folders that have not been opened for many years, a bunch of movies, heavy TV series, old installers, etc. For convenience, you can sort everything by size: this way you will clearly see what “eats up” more of the whole place.

    If you are not yet ready to change the hard drive, you will have to decisively remove everything unnecessary. Valuable but heavy things can be partially “stuffed” onto flash drives, external drives and various cloud services.

  2. Another tip: never save personal files on disk "WITH"- because of this, a weak computer running Windows 10 is almost guaranteed to slow down. If there is something there now, move the files to neighboring drives, for example, to “D”. Don't forget about:
  • desktop (if necessary, it is better to create shortcuts),
  • libraries (my videos, my images, etc.)
  • and be sure to check your “Downloads” folder (tons of long-forgotten files often accumulate in it).
After all deletions, do not forget to empty the trash!

Defragmentation (optimization) of disks

It is especially good to carry out defragmentation after you have cleaned up “system garbage”, removed some installed software, or manually deleted unnecessary files from your computer. This useful procedure restores the correct disk structure, which seriously speeds up Windows 10 on a weak computer.

If you nevertheless took the time to radically clean non-system disks (removed everything heavy but unnecessary from them), repeat the procedure for them (D, E, etc.)

Cleaning the registry with a program to optimize Windows 10

If you are not an advanced user, we do not recommend digging through the registry yourself. It's safer to leave everything to a program that will do it for you. Let's look at the steps using CCleaner as an example, a popular free program for optimizing Windows 10. By the way, cleaning and defragmentation can be done in it.

Eliminate unnecessary load on the processor

Often some completely unnecessary process is constantly running in the background, causing the computer to slow down greatly. To speed up Windows 10, it is highly advisable to clean up the task manager.

Optimizing your hard drive on Windows 10

If you have a regular HDD and not a high-speed SSD, do this.

The hard drive will now work better, and at the same time, Windows 10 will also speed up a little.

Removing unnecessary tiles from the Start menu

The system automatically places a set of live application tiles on the Start menu. Stop by and see if you use them?

We recommend leaving only those that are really necessary, and selecting the remaining rectangles with the right mouse button and selecting “Remove from the Start menu.” This is not a panacea, but it will still slow down Windows 10 a little less.

Turn off tracking in Windows 10

Yes, the “top ten” really “spys” on our actions, regularly sending the collected information to Microsoft. The tracking function also consumes some system resources. To optimize Windows 10 on slow computers, it is better to turn it off.

When a speed increase is urgently needed: remove special effects

Simplifying graphics

If your computer slows down too much, you can radically speed up Windows 10 by sacrificing “cool” graphics. Of course, the graphical shell of the OS will become very simple, turning into something between the seven and the rare Win 98. But the serious increase in performance on old computers is worth it - all the freed up resources will be directed in the right direction.

Particularly good results in terms of optimizing Windows 10 can be expected here on weak PCs and laptops with up to 4GB of RAM.

Now turn off the animation

Turn off menu transparency

This detail looks impressive, of course, but it also wastes precious memory.

Removing system sounds

Another good method that will contribute to speeding up Windows 10. Don’t worry, the sound on the computer itself will not go away. Only alerts for various system events will be removed. You can easily do without them, but the system will no longer have to “torture” the hard drive in search of this or that sound file.

Windows 10 still slows down. What else can you do?

Here are some more useful optimization tips that will speed up Windows 10 on any computer or laptop.

  1. Check your system for viruses regularly. Here are some smart free antivirus programs:
  2. Make it a rule to always turn off your computer at night. If the system works without stopping for several days, it begins to seriously slow down - this is especially felt on weak computers. If Windows 10 is slow, reboot more often, it really helps.
  3. Don’t forget to clean your laptop or PC from dust twice a year - a computer clogged with dust will heat up and work much slower.
  4. Captain Obvious, but still. If your computer is weak, try to open as few programs as possible at the same time - especially those that heavily load the processor. It's better to take turns. This also applies to browser tabs.

Now you know how to speed up Windows 10 if it is slow. Well, if the system is completely “killed” and reinstallation cannot be avoided, be sure to take a look at our article “How to reinstall Windows 10”. And be sure to share your successes and questions in the comments!

Windows 10 desktop

The main problem of the "ten" is that it has a lot of background processes. And if the computer has less than 4 gigabytes of RAM, then this number of unnecessary processes becomes critical. Even well-equipped PCs and laptops are sometimes unable to work properly with Windows 10. Therefore, you need to know how to speed up the operating system and make it give up a bunch of unnecessary processes and useless options. The task is not that difficult. The main thing is to strictly follow the instructions, since you will have to disable some options in the very depths of the OS. And there, one wrong move can destroy the entire system. Therefore, you need to act carefully. Why speed up Windows? This is necessary for the user to work comfortably at the computer. After all, when the car slows down it is simply impossible to work. After setting all the necessary parameters of the “tens”, the PC will work like a clock.

Acceleration methods

There are several options that can help optimize your operating system and make it run faster. However, they will not improve overall PC performance. Here you will need to replace the hardware.

  • Startup programs. Often they become the main cause of brakes. You can get rid of them using standard Windows options or using third-party programs
  • Windows Defender options. The standard OS antivirus can also greatly slow down your computer. Especially if one of the resource-intensive features is enabled
  • Spy functions "tens". They run in the background (hidden from the user), but also load the system. And they can’t be turned off so easily
  • Tiles in the Start menu. Live tiles are beautiful and convenient. But they consume their share of RAM. And if no one uses them, then why not remove them altogether?
  • Graphic effects. When the windows open smoothly, the interface elements slowly fade out - it’s beautiful. But RAM eats these delights mercilessly. They can also cause brakes.
  • Cluttered system partition. If there is catastrophically little space on the hard drive, then the system may completely refuse to work. And the brakes may be due to lack of disk space

All of the above reasons can theoretically affect the performance of a PC or laptop in a negative way. And the lion's share of these problems can be fixed using Windows 10 system utilities.

Regarding the numerous programs to speed up and optimize the operating system, then it is better not to use them at all (especially on old machines). They are always in the system tray and start automatically along with the OS. As a result, they themselves load Windows.

Startup programs

A certain number of programs are loaded along with the operating system. Some of them are necessary because they are components of system drivers. But for the most part, the startup list is just junk. And it wouldn’t hurt to remove some utilities from this list.

This can be done easily using the tens system capabilities. And it is not at all necessary to install third-party software or delve into the registry to do this. Just one utility is enough.

Press the key combination "Win+R" and the tool appears "Run." Enter the command in the line "taskmgr" and click "OK" or "Enter" on keyboard.

The main task manager window will open. But only basic information will be displayed. And we need detailed information. Click "More details."

Now go to the tab

Now you need to carefully review the list of programs and determine which ones are not needed and without which the system can work normally. For example, you can disable the same One Drive. This will not harm the OS. But most users don't need it. Right-click on the program name and select from the drop-down menu "Disable."

You can disable other applications in the same way. However, do not touch system applications and software that comes with drivers. Otherwise, the OS may become unstable. After disabling all programs, reboot the PC or laptop.

Windows Defender features

It is known for certain that at least one function of the standard Windows antivirus loads the OS beyond all limits. It's called Control Flow Guard (CFG). And you just need to turn it off. There will be no harm to security from this.

The fact is that CFG is protection against “exploits” that take advantage of RAM vulnerabilities. However, such malicious software is extremely rare. And this option uses a lot of OS resources all the time.

Open the menu "Start", looking for an item "Windows Defender Security Center" and click on it.

Scroll the window to the end and see the inscription "Protection against exploits." This block is what we need. Click on the item "Exploit protection settings."

Now you need to select the item in all lines "Off" default". Only after this the exploit protection will be deactivated.

Now the standard antivirus will not mercilessly use the resources of the computer and operating system. It is worth considering, however, that sometimes Windows Defender will persistently persuade the user to return everything to its place. But you shouldn't agree.

Disabling spy functions "tens"

Read also: Windows Update: How to disable? Methods for Windows 7 and Windows 10

Windows 10's spying tendencies are well known. Telemetry, keylogger and other invisible utilities for collecting information work in the background and do not allow themselves to be detected even in the list of processes. They're just pretending to be system options.

The worst thing is that you can’t simply remove them (like regular programs). And Windows itself won't help here. All that remains is to use third-party applications. One of the best is Destroy Windows 10 Spying. The program is free. It can be downloaded from the official website. No installation required.

Run Destroy Windows 10 Spying (DWS) as administrator. To do this, go to the directory with the downloaded program, find the file "DWS.exe" and right-click on it. Select from the drop-down menu

The main program window will open with a large button "Destroy Windows Spying NOW!"(under the console), but it’s too early to click on it. First you need to configure the settings for disabling spyware. Go to the tab "Tools".

In the tab "Settings" There are settings to disable some options. You only need to move the sliders to the on state in some of them. You only need to turn off the items "Disable Windows Defender" And "Create Restore Point". All other switches must be in position "On". After that, move back to the first tab.

Now you can click on the big blue button. The spy modules will begin to disable. The entire process will be displayed in the console.

Once the process is completed, the program will ask you to reboot the machine. You need to agree to this, since some actions can only be continued after a reboot. As soon as the OS starts again, there will be no trace of the spyware modules.

Live tiles in the Start menu

The guys from Microsoft met users halfway and returned the Start menu to Windows, which was shamelessly removed in version 8 of the OS. However, the menu turned out to be anything but classic. The new feature was live tiles that launched Metro apps.

However, users reacted to this idea more than coolly. And no one wants to use the application data. Therefore, live tiles can be disabled. Or better yet, completely remove the Metro applications to which they are attached. You can do this using the wonderful system console.

Open the menu "Start", let's go to the catalog "Windows PowerShell", select an object with the required bit depth, right-click on it and select "Additionally" and click "Run as administrator."

Now in the terminal window you should enter the command "Get-AppxPackage | Select Name, PackageFullName" and press "Enter". It will show a list of all applications installed on the system. Moreover, they will be displayed as specified in the OS. This means that they can be painlessly removed by adding this particular name to another command.

Let's move on to removal. For example, we need to uninstall the One Note application. We look for his full name and enter it into the team "Get-AppxPackage PackageFullName | Remove-AppxPackage" instead of a phrase "PackageFullName". You can use asterisks instead of typing the entire application name. So, the command to remove One Note will look like this: “Get-AppxPackage *OneNote* | Remove-AppxPackage". Paste this command into the terminal and click "Enter".

That's the whole process. Other applications are uninstalled using a similar algorithm. The main thing is not to make mistakes in the team. If the error is minor, then nothing will happen at all. But if you replace a couple of elements, you can completely “kill” the operating system.

Microsoft has improved the Windows system well, but it has also added additional features that slow down Windows 10. These features include services, such as those aimed at networking and synchronizing information across different types of devices.

But it’s not just Microsoft services that are responsible for system slowdowns. Often, we ourselves unconsciously create problems using additional antiviruses without disabling the standard one, adding various widgets and applications, installing programs into autorun, which can happen without our knowledge.

So, we have finally decided to bring order to the system, where to start?

How and what services can be disabled in Windows 10

What services can be disabled?

  • Windows Biometric Service- used for processing and storing biometric data;
  • Computer browser- used to create a list of computers on the network;
  • Secondary login- allows other users to control the computer;
  • Print Manager- ensures the operation of printing devices;
  • CNG Key Isolation- produces insulation for the key process;
  • SNMP trap- provides message interception for local SNMP agents;
  • Work station- access to workstations via SMB protocol;
  • Work folders- used to synchronize directories on different devices;
  • Xbox Live Online Service- provides access to Xbox Live services;
  • All hardware related services Hyper-V visualization- services that are designed for the operation of virtual machines;
  • Geographic Location Service- used to track computer coordinates;
  • Sensor Data Service- processes and stores information received from sensors installed on a PC;
  • Sensor service- manages sensors on a PC;
  • Client License Service- ensures the correct operation of the Windows 10 store;
  • Microsoft Windows SMS Router Service- forwards messages according to pre-created rules;
  • Remote registry- created for editing the registry by a remote user;
  • Fax- ensures the operation of devices that can receive and send fax messages.

All of the listed services do not affect the performance and stability of the operating system, therefore you can safely turn them off.

I would also like to note that before disabling these services, carefully read their purpose in the description. For example, if you disable Print Spooler and Bluetooth Helpdesk, you will not be able to connect the printer and will not be able to use Bluetooth devices.

I would also like to advise our readers that if you want to disable a certain service not from the list considered, then carefully read its functions and purpose so as not to harm the system.

For example, if you stop Windows Audio, you will disable all audio devices and audio programs. To restore the functionality of audio devices and sound programs, you need to restart unused Windows Audio. From this example it can be noted that it is necessary to remember the services to be disabled to restore Windows 10 to normal operation.

How to disable unnecessary services in Windows 10

Disable unnecessary services using the Services add-on

Get into the add-on " Services» possible through Control Panel and through the program " Execute", entering the command "services.msc" in it.

By opening the add-on, you will see the entire list of services installed on your computer.

For example, let's try to disable the service " Remote registry» through the opened add-on. To do this, let's go to the service we are looking for and open it.

From the window that opens you can see a detailed description of the service, as well as its status. To finally stop " Remote registry", we will select the launch type " Disabled"and press the button Stop.

Disable unnecessary services using the command line

Each of the services that are listed in the first example can be disabled quite easily and quickly through the console. To disable it, we need a console running in Administrator mode. In Windows 10, you can launch the console in Administrator mode in various ways. The most convenient way is to click on the menu “ Start» right-click and select the item we need.

In the running console, let's try to stop the service that is already familiar to us " Remote registry" To do this, type the command net stop "RemoteRegistry" in the console and execute it.

If you need to start the “Remote Registry” again, you can do this with the command net start "RemoteRegistry"

The English name for entering on the command line can be found in the task manager on the “ tab Services»

This example is best suited for system administrators and experienced users. I would also like to note that the example considered can be used without problems on previous operating systems Windows 7 and 8.

Disable unnecessary services using PowerShell

In addition to the command line, you can also use PowerShell. You can open PowerShell in Windows 10 through the Control Panel or through search.

Now let's enter the command stop-service remoteregistry in PowerShell and execute it.

This command will stop the service we are familiar with " Remote registry" To restart " Remote registry"in PowerShell, you need to run the command: start-service remoteregistry

In the same way, unnecessary services are stopped via PowerShell. This example, like the previous one, is best suited for system administrators and advanced users.

Stop services via task manager

First of all, let's launch the Task Manager. You can launch it in Windows 10 using the familiar key combination Ctrl + Shift + Esc. You can also launch it by clicking on the menu “ Start» right-click and select « Task Manager».

In the open task manager, go to the “ Services» to the remote registry.

Now right-click on it and select “ Stop».

After these steps, the remote registry will be stopped. In the same way, you can restart this service.

I would also like to note that you can open the add-in discussed in the first example through the task manager. To do this, click on the link at the bottom of the task manager window.

Disabling unnecessary services Easy Service Optimizer 1.2 Portable

This is a very simple program that will help significantly speed up your system by disabling unnecessary and little-used Windows services.

Easy Service Optimizer allows you to disable unused Windows services in three scenarios: safe, optimal and extreme.

Now you don't need to go and disable any services in Windows settings. Easy Service Optimizer will help you optimize your system by disabling services in just one click and without necessarily understanding which service is intended for what. It is strongly recommended that you create a system restore point before applying the settings.

You can also disable any services yourself, and, if necessary, delete them ( If you lack basic and technical knowledge, we strongly do not recommend doing this. ).

Video about improving Windows 10 performance

“Braking” a computer or laptop always causes negative emotions. Often, this problem affects not only the user’s nervous system, but also the device itself. In fact, the solution is quite simple: you just need to check the device's performance and improve it. This is easy to do even for a beginner. The main thing is to deal with the elements that prevent you from “overclocking” the operating system to its full capacity or interfere with its operation. After eliminating the cause of the freeze, your device will “fly”.

How to check the performance of a computer or laptop

When buying a new laptop or installing new Windows on a computer, any user wants to configure it so that the system works at maximum performance. As practice shows, this does not always work out. The performance issue is especially acute for those who are trying to install Windows 10 on older devices. As a result, problems arise with the operation of the system, freezing and “braking”. Don't despair - the problem may simply be caused by a large number of automatically enabled utilities and applications that the user did not even know about. If you turn them off and clear the system of other unnecessary components, even an old laptop will begin to “fly”.

Often, users do not check the performance of their devices only because they find this process quite difficult. But that's not true. In fact, this procedure can be done using components already built into the system. The scan will help monitor the performance and operation of the system as a whole and will even show whether any virus has “settled” in it.

Check your device using the performance level index

Microsoft has provided such a performance check in all versions of Windows. And Windows 10 was no exception. You can run the performance level index using a simple algorithm:

  1. Launch the command line (go through “Start” and select the “Run” section or simultaneously press Win + R).
  2. Enter the command winsat formal - restart clean.
  3. Wait while the system collects information.
  4. Open the Windows partition on the hard drive (on which the system is recorded).
  5. Open the Performance folder.
  6. Next, open the WinSAT section and select DataStore.
  7. In this folder, open the file Formal.Assessment (Recent).WinSAT.xml.
  8. Find the WinSPR block, where Windows performance information is located. Indicators SystemScore - general indicator, MemoryScore - RAM, CpuScore - average processor performance index, GraphicsScore - graphics card performance, GamingScore - game performance, DiskScore - information about reading data from the hard drive.

The average index score for Windows 10 is 8.1.

In the WinSPR information block you can find out the performance index of almost all OS components

Checking the device through the "Task Manager"

To check the functionality of the device through the “Task Manager”, you need to follow these steps:

  1. Enter the “Task Manager” through “Start” (or simultaneously press the key combination Alt + Ctrl + Delete).
  2. Open the "Performance" section. Here are performance graphs that, in percentage terms, reflect the performance of Windows 10 and its individual components.

Device performance graphs in the Task Manager will help you evaluate the performance of the system and its components

Checking the device with third-party resources

If you need a more accurate analysis of the system's performance, you can use special programs. They display more accurate information about the device's performance and also contain other useful information. Among the variety of such programs, the following can be distinguished:

  • AIDA64 is the most popular download utility; shows all information about the computer: from free space on the hard drive to the model of additional devices and drivers for them;
  • SiSoftware Sandra Lite is a free utility with a simple control panel; the test result is presented in clear color graphics;
  • 3DMark - a paid universal program with a wide range of analysis (price - $30);
  • CINEBENCH - a utility with the ability to analyze various aspects, including PC performance;
  • Winaero is another utility that will quickly analyze your performance process.

How to speed up your computer or laptop on Windows 10

If checking your PC's performance reveals its low performance, you should remove unnecessary system elements and disable those that are rarely used. In most cases, this will help the device speed up.

Cleaning startup

Every time you turn on your laptop or computer, programs from the startup list automatically launch. Not all of them are listed personally by the user. Some programs end up there by default when installing the operating system, so the user may not even know about them. Carefully review the list of all background programs and disable or remove utilities and applications that are not needed or rarely used (you can return them to the auto-enable list at any time).

What you can safely disable in startup:

  • torrent client (for example, uTorrent, MediaGet) - these utilities usually “settle” in startup, but there is no constant need for them; this kind of program can be enabled immediately before downloading anything using it;
  • cloud storage (OneDrive) - the application is in the startup list immediately after installing Windows 10; if there is no constant need for it, it can also be removed from the list;
  • peripheral programs - if a printer, scanner, etc. is connected to the PC, then the startup contains programs from the manufacturers of this equipment; such programs select performance reserves, while the listed devices will work correctly even without their programs in startup;
  • other unknown applications - if there are program names unknown to you in the startup list, you should check on the Internet what they are responsible for and disable them if not needed.

To clean startup, follow these steps:

  1. Open Task Manager (shortcut Ctrl + Shift + Esc).
  2. In the tab that opens, a table will appear with a list of all programs and applications that automatically launch when Windows 10 boots. At the bottom of the list on the right there is a “Disable” button, with which you need to disable applications and programs.

Video: Ways to improve productivity in Windows 10

All applications disabled in this way will no longer launch when the computer boots, which will have a positive effect on the performance of the device.

You can also disable a particular program in startup by right-clicking on it and selecting the “Delete” option from the list that opens.

By clearing the startup list you can increase your computer's performance significantly

Disabling reports

With the release of the new version of Windows 10, you can find a lot of information on the Internet that Microsoft is collecting information about users and spying on them. This is not entirely true. Some information is indeed collected, such as information about the products you order and the websites you visit. But leakage of confidential information is excluded. However, such applications consume system reserves, which negatively affects its performance, so it is better to disable them.

If you already have Windows 10 installed, check to see if Cathedral Data is disabled on your device:

There are several good utilities that help you find and collect into one list items that can be disabled. The user can only determine what to disable and what not. Before running such utilities, it is advisable to create a system restore point. These are the programs:

  • DWS (Destroy Windows 10 Spying) is a program designed to stop activity tracking activities on devices running Windows 10 OS; has a clear and simple interface in Russian;
  • O&O ShutUp10 - an easy-to-use program in Russian contains recommendations on what can be disabled and what is better to leave;
  • Ashampoo AntiSpy for Windows 10 is a useful utility in English that runs without installation; the menu has all the necessary tools to disable tracking, as well as recommendations and tips;
  • WPD is a free application in Russian that allows you to disable not only “spyware” positions, but also to individually configure a firewall with the ability to block telemetry, allow or block access to the Internet for third-party programs, and disable OS updates.

Disable apps from the Start menu

On Windows 10, the Start menu uses Live Tiles - a set of applications for quick launch: calendar, homegroup, weather, OneNote, mail and others. At least half of them are not used by users at all or are used very rarely. And applications at this time consume device resources. Therefore, it is advisable to remove or disable applications from the Start menu that you do not use.

By moving the slider, you can turn off or turn on the desired option

You can disable any application from the Start menu by right-clicking on it and selecting the “Unpin from Start Screen” section. That's it - the application will no longer appear in the menu. But this does not mean that it is disabled, because it will still consume the device's reserves and reduce its performance. It is best to disable unnecessary applications permanently. To do this you need to do the following:

To improve device performance, you can remove the following programs and applications that are usually not used by users:

  • people - “People” application;
  • communicationsapps - calendar and mail;
  • zunevideo - “Cinema and TV”;
  • 3dbuilder - 3D Builder;
  • skypeapp - download Skype;
  • solitaire - Microsoft Solitaire Collection;
  • officehub - download or improve Office;
  • xbox - XBOX application;
  • photos - photographs;
  • maps - maps;
  • calculator - calculator;
  • camera - camera;
  • alarms - alarms and clocks;
  • onenote - OneNote;
  • bing - news, sports, weather, finance (all at once);
  • soundrecorder - “Voice recording”;
  • windowsphone - “Phone Manager”.

Driver Update

The reason for poor PC performance may also be unoriginal device drivers. Windows 10 has a system installed to recognize and automatically install the necessary drivers, but failures often occur. Therefore, in order to check the drivers and improve the performance of your computer or laptop, you can perform a kind of revision of the device:

  1. Right-click on the Start menu bar and select “Device Manager” from the list that opens.
  2. Open “Properties of key devices” and select the “Driver” section.
  3. View driver publishers. Microsoft must be listed as the supplier (except for the video card - in this position the official supplier is NVidia, AMD or Intel). If the supplier is different, you need to download the original driver from the manufacturer’s official page and install it.

Disabling visual and other effects

Any Windows device has many elements that make interacting with your PC more colorful and interesting. But they also consume computer resources. You can slightly improve the performance of your device only if Windows 10 is installed on an earlier version of your laptop or computer.

Visual effects

If we talk about all the components of the operating system that affect performance, then first of all we need to remember about visual effects. To disable them you need to do the following:

Graphic and color effects

To disable graphics, follow the steps:

  1. Go to the “Special Features” section (Win+I key combination).
  2. Select "Other options".
  3. Disable "Play animation in Windows".

If you want to turn off the color, the instructions are as follows:

  1. Open the Start menu.
  2. Go to "Options".
  3. Open the “Personalization” folder and select “Colors”, where you want to turn off transparency.

Sound effects

To turn off sounds on your device:

  1. Open the Start menu.
  2. Go to "Control Panel".
  3. Open the “Sound” tab. Here you need to check the “Mute” box.

Indexing

Indexing helps you find information, folders or files stored on your computer through internal search. To quickly find the necessary information on a device without stopping, the device is scanned, and this requires resources, which reduces productivity. To disable indexing you need to:

  1. Go to the “Run” menu (Win + R).
  2. Enter the services.msc command.
  3. Find the “Windows Search” service in the list, right-click on it and open the “Properties” folder.
  4. In the “Startup type” column, select “Disabled”.

To disable the Windows Search service, you need to open the folder properties and select the “Disabled” option.

If you disable indexing, you will not be able to use internal search.

Temp folder

Temporary and intermediate files are stored in this folder. They also slow down your device. Therefore, it needs to be cleaned from time to time as follows:

  1. Close all folders and programs.
  2. Open the “This PC” section.
  3. Enter %TEMP% in the top field.
  4. Delete the contents of the folder.
  5. To restart a computer.

The Temp folder stores temporary files that can be deleted to improve device performance

Browser extensions

Setting up your favorite browser is an individual matter. It is important for the user to configure it so that he has quick access to the necessary tools at any time. However, it often happens that previously installed extensions are no longer used, but continue to use system reserves. If your goal is to improve your computer's performance, check all extensions through your browser settings and remove unused ones.

Don't forget to clear your cache and delete your browsing history at least once a month. This will significantly improve the performance of the device.

Removing viruses

Viruses and Trojans not only harm individual files and the system, but also slow down PC performance. Of course, a careful user often runs an anti-virus scan of the device, but a regular anti-virus does not always find all infected files. However, there are programs (for example, Malwarebytes Anti-Malware) that even find “disguised” viruses. If you suddenly start having problems with the performance of your device, download a similar program and use it to check your PC.

Malwarebytes Anti-Malware scans the system for a long time, but after completing the full scanning cycle it finds all infected files and hidden viruses

Enable Windows 10 High Performance Mode

The power supply of the device directly affects the performance of the OS. You can choose the optimal energy consumption option for your PC as follows:

Using utilities to improve device performance

If your level of computer skills does not yet allow you to “dig” into the hardware, then special programs will come to the rescue that solve the problem with minimal user participation.

Built-in Microsoft utility

Your Windows 10 device comes with a useful Disk Cleanup program that cleans up a ton of unnecessary files, thereby improving performance. You can find it like this:

  1. Open the “Properties” tab of the hard drive.
  2. Open the "General" section and select "Disk Cleanup".
  3. In the window that opens, select all the items that can be deleted (be sure to select “Temporary files”) and confirm your choice.

CCleaner

Despite the fact that the program is shareware, even in the free version there are many elements for optimizing the system: the ability to optimize startup, deleting temporary files and uninstalling programs, cleaning browsers and much more.

The CCleaner interface is easy to understand: on the left is a column with tool sections, on the right are folders and device files

AVG TuneUp

The biggest advantage of this program is that it is enough to set it up once, and all subsequent cleansing will occur automatically with a user-specified cycle. Running the utility once every 2-3 weeks will keep the device practically sterile clean: the system registry will be cleared, temporary files will be deleted, viruses will be neutralized, and autorun will be reliably protected from unauthorized intervention by third-party programs.

To access all functions of the program, you must subscribe to it. The cost of a subscription is approximately 25–30 USD. e. per year.

The AVG TuneUp interface consists of only 5 buttons, which ensure reliable protection and high performance of your PC

Advanced SystemCare

A free program that can be downloaded legally from the manufacturer’s website. There is also a paid option with additional features. But the free version is quite enough to optimize the operation of the device. There are more than a dozen useful utilities in the program menu.

A clear control panel of the program makes it easy to optimize the performance of the gadget

Auslogics BoostSpeed

The Auslogics BoostSpeed utility is designed specifically to improve device performance. The new version for Windows 10 has all the components to improve device performance by up to 40%.

With Auslogics BoostSpeed you can increase your process speed by half

In pursuit of increasing computer performance, your rash actions can cause great harm to the entire system, so the main thing in this matter is not to overdo it. Perform all manipulations and actions exactly in accordance with the instructions. To avoid errors and performance issues, follow these guidelines:

  1. Be careful when downloading and installing new programs. Sometimes programs can start a conflict, which will not only lead to a decrease in performance, but will also end fatally for the system.
  2. Clean the system unit. Sometimes contamination of the computer's internal hardware and components can be more harmful than a full disk. Therefore, clean your PC every few months.
  3. Select the right components for the device.
  4. When running cleaning programs, carefully check what exactly the program wants to delete so as not to accidentally lose important information.
  5. Update your drivers promptly.
  6. Regularly check your system for viruses.
  7. Don't disable swap files. Otherwise, the performance of the device will not improve at all, but some programs may not start.
  8. Do not run cleaning programs every day.
  9. Don't disable all services indiscriminately. If you do not know exactly how important a particular program is for the operation of the system, it is better not to delete or disable it.

If the speed of your device is no longer satisfactory, there is no need to buy new expensive equipment to improve its performance. An old computer or laptop can still quickly cope with its duties. The main thing is to correctly configure and distribute resource consumption between all components of the device.
