Through a search, I found an article on the Habrahabr website, where the author proposed automatic conversion of books into graphic format. But this would not help me, because... The book I needed was optimized for approximately A4 format, and the PocketBook 626 screen size is only 6 inches. So I had to create a book in fb2 format. Long, but in principle necessary, because... I didn’t find any normal alternatives (it was possible to read directly in pdf format, but it was displayed very poorly on the reader, and without hyphenation).

To create fb2, in addition to having the source text of the book, you need to install an extension for OpenOffice:
1. Download and install OpenOffice (if it is not on your computer).
2. Download and unpack
3. In OpenOffice, go to the Menu and select Tools -> Manage extensions... -> Add...
4. Select the file OOoFBTools.oxt and install it. After OpenOffice restarts, the menu item should appear OOoFBTools

Once all the tools for creating a book are prepared, you can begin creating it. I’ll note right away that this process is not at all fast, but with some practice you can create several hundred A4 pages over the weekend, which in principle is quite enough to prepare reading material for the whole week.

1. For convenience, create your own page format in OpenOffice.Writer, which is more similar to the screen of an e-book: Format -> Page... -> Paper size"Custom..." - approximately 8.80cm by 12.50cm and margins 0.30cm on the right and left and 0.50cm on the top and bottom.
2. Copy the text from the PDF file and paste it into a new OpenOffice Writer document. It is better to paste through “Paste as...” or using the key combination Ctrl + Shift + V and select "Text without formatting"
3. Next, call the FB2 Styles Panel: Menu -> OOoFBTools -> “Fb2 Styles Panel...”
4. Launch Menu -> OOoFBTools -> “Text proofreader...”
In this version of fb2tools, the corrector is also applied to a block of text selected as a listing (code), so to avoid unnecessary deletions, it is better to remove the checked items (I also removed the removal of page breaks):

6. Now you need to manually go through the text to identify missing line breaks.
7. After this, you can use the style panel to highlight parts of the text:

• Book - Title
• Book - Author
• Heading 1 (for the title of the Chapters of the book)
• Heading 2 (for the names of subsections)
• Quote - Subtitle (to highlight the word Note)

8. If the book contains code fragments (listings), then you need to select the menu item OOoFBTools -> Automatic markup of program listings
9. After all the necessary styles have been applied to the text, you can create a “Table of Contents” using OpenOffice. All text highlighted in the “Heading” style will be automatically added to it and page numbers will be added.
10. Before launching Export to FB2 for the first time, you need to configure the following parameters: Menu -> OOoFBTools -> Export2FB21 Settings…

Unfortunately, OOoFBTools is just a Visual Basic script, so it won’t be possible to automatically correct the text 100% correctly and you will have to manually remove paragraph symbols ¶ or insert it where needed. For convenience, you need to enable the display of Non-printing characters in OpenOffice.Writer (Ctrl + F10).

You need to remove ALL paragraph characters followed by text that begins with a small (lowercase) letter. There are, of course, exceptions, for example, when the text begins with numbers, but this happens extremely rarely.

FB2 books, which have become popular especially among PDA owners, are available for download from numerous online libraries. And each user is quite capable of creating an FB2 book on their own. There are already many tools for this. We will look at one of them, Fiction Book Designer, in today's review. This utility allows you to create FB2 books, edit text and tags.

After installing and launching Fiction Book Designer, a small sample text with short instructions opens in the editor window.

If we have our own text, then upload it ( File – Open Book) and start formatting. When preparing an FB2 book, it is advisable to highlight entire paragraphs (lines) double click, this allows you to save a little time and accurately select text.

Any work begins with titles. Click on the line with the name (it will be highlighted), then right-click to call up the context menu (or menu Format) and select the item book title. Thus, we indicate the name of the FB2 book in tags, and the selected text is automatically formatted, for example, it is centered, highlighted in a different color, the font is changed, etc.

To see all the tags of an FB2 book, click the button . Save the changes and check in the window that opens make Fiction Book file. In field book title the name we recently highlighted should be listed. Similarly, we add all other important parts of the text into tags, for example, chapter titles, subheadings, annotations, etc.

When creating an FB2 book, it is necessary that the author's name be indicated in the tags in the following format: first name, patronymic (if any), last name. If the text is in the wrong order, you can quickly correct it by selecting the menu item more transformations - shift selected words. In any case, full name. the author of the work should appear in the tags, and the text will be formatted.

Further in our example follows book title and number(or the title and number of the book series). In order for the program for reading FB2 books to display the text correctly, in this case it is necessary to correct the title and number of the book in the following format: (Book title – book number) . Be sure to indicate in parentheses separated by a dash. Then, as usual, select the line and in the context menu (or in the menu Format) select the item subtitle. In tags, this data needs to be checked in the field sequence.

If the text contains annotation, then select it and select it in the context menu annotation.

Epigraph at the beginning of the book, also highlight and select the item in the menu epigraph(together with the author, if indicated). Then, if there is a link to the author at the end, mark it as text author. If the line with the author is the last in the epigraph, the same can be done faster by selecting epigraph+text author.
