PS3 firmware in detail.

You can flash the PS3 console in almost any service center. This is a pretty popular service, due to the advantages that the stitched game console gives to the original one.

The firmware process consists in unlocking the prefix shell and changing it. If you flash the PS3 correctly, you will have access to previously impossible things:

  • the console will begin to play not only licensed discs, but also copies, self-written discs and even pirated media;
  • you will be able to download and install games from the Internet without worrying about the availability of a license for them;
  • installation of paid games and applications becomes available for free;
  • you can install on the console not only the applications that are offered by the manufacturer, but also those designed by craftsmen in the vast network.

In short, flash PS3 after purchase is useful. However, there are a number of nuances that should be considered. So, only those users who are familiar with electronics in practice are at risk.

This process requires practical skills and special equipment, as well as programmers, with the help of which the console is unlocked. Naturally, few people at home there will be such things.

In addition, inept actions when attempting to flash the console themselves can lead to damage, which will be quite expensive.

In short, it is better not to try to flash expensive equipment on your own, and immediately turn to professionals who will help you with this. You can flash Play Station 3 in Moscow in dozens of places.

But flash PS4 you can not everywhere. This is due to the high degree of protection of the console by the manufacturer and the relatively recent period of its production.

However, and for this are craftsmen. The main thing is to choose the right service center for the firmware procedure. There are dozens of such places and all of them differ in the quality of the work performed and the cost of repairs and firmware.

If you are still wondering whether to install the firmware for you on the PS3 or not, learn from this article what advantages you will get. And also about what disadvantages the firmware has. Make a decision weighing all the pros and cons.

PS 3 firmware is an installation of modified software. The official firmware version is replaced with a custom one and a special MultiMan shell or Rogero Manager is installed, which makes launching games more convenient.

What do you get by flashing your console

If you install the firmware on the PlayStation 3, then you can:

Record games to the internal disk of the console from licensed disks or downloaded from the Internet (these games can be copied to the console via ftp or from a flash drive). In the future, to run these games you will not need disks.

Run games not only from disks and internal memory, but also from an external usb disk or flash drive. It can also be games downloaded from the Internet or copied from licensed discs.

Use homebrew - unofficial programs for PS3 - more convenient file managers and shells for running games, video players, etc.

In other words:

You save money on games (you can no longer buy them)

You save drive resource (you can not use it at all)

You expand the possibilities of your console

Agree, this is a good reason to flash the PlayStation 3. However, the firmware has some drawbacks.

Cons of firmware

Sony provides the PSN online gaming service for most of its consoles. Including for the PS3. But on the PSN network there is a DNAS protection system, which is able to calculate unlicensed versions of games. In this case, you will be banned. To avoid this, play over the network only in licensed games and do not use homebrew-programs during the release to the network.

In other words, the firmware functions can only be used when you are disconnected from the PSN network. And even in this case, the probability of a ban remains.

But this is not the biggest flaw of the firmware (and if you are not interested in multiplayer, then this is not a flaw at all). There is another firmware fat minus.

Worst news

So, you were delighted with the new features and decided to flash your console. But do not rush to carry it to the repair shop or download firmware from the Internet for self-installation. The fact is that

Not all PlayStation 3 models can be flashed.

You can only flash consoles with the version of the official software not higher than 3.55. If you have a newer version installed, then it is necessary to make a downgrade - lower the version of the official shell to “stitched”.

Downgrade requires connecting a special programmer (E3-flasher). Therefore, downgrade must be done in a specialized workshop. Of course, you can lower the firmware version yourself, but the cost of the programmer needed for this will be even higher than the downgrade with subsequent firmware in the service center. That is, giving your prefix to the firmware to specialists, you will save money and get a guarantee on all the works.

Unfortunately, not all models are possible to downgrade for further firmware. Downgrade (and, therefore, flashing) all the "thick curling" - that is, PS 3 FAT, which were produced until July 2009. From the PS3 Slim series, prefixes released before 2010 and some revisions that were released in the first half of 2011 are being stitched.

PlayStation 3 SuperSlim and PS3 Slim, released since July 2011 will not be downgraded and not stitched! But most of them can be installed ODE, which has similar functionality.

How do I know if my console is being flashed?

If you have a PS3 Super Slim, it is definitely not flashing (yet).

If you have a PlayStation 3 Slim, you need to know the specific model of your firmware and release date. This information is written on the back of the console.

The PS3 Slim series is denoted by CECH2 *** or CECH3 *** code, where *** are numbers indicating a specific model. The release date is indicated using DATA CODE type 0A. The number indicates the year of release (0 is 2010; 2011 is denoted by one), and the letter indicates the quarter in which the prefix is released: A - I (from January to March); D - IV (from October to December) The second and third quarters are denoted by the letters B and C, respectively.

When you know the model and release date, call our service center, and the specialists will answer you - whether it is possible or to it (drive emulator).

  • Prefix Sony Playstation 3 with official software 3.55  or version below. Firmware 3.56 and above are not supported yet.
  • USB flash drive or USB hard drive formatted with FAT32 file system.

Preparing for PS3 firmware

Check the version of the software (software) console at the moment. You can do this as follows: go to the PS3 menu in the section “Settings” - “System Settings” - “System Information”. The screen will show the current software version of your console.

1. Install the official software update version 3.55.

If you already have firmware 3.55 installed, then proceed to the installation (as I wrote above, the prefixes with software version 3.56 or higher are not yet flashed).
Make sure that the file system of the used media (USB HDD or USB flash drive) is FAT32, if your console “sees” its contents, then the USB flash drive is already formatted in FAT32. Create a folder in the root on your USB drive with the name "PS3" and the subfolder "UPDATE" (keeping the specified register). Download the archive with the official software update to 3.55, unzip it and copy the file of the official firmware “PS3UPDAT.PUP” to the PS3 / UPDATE directory created earlier. Connect the USB flash drive to the Playstation 3 console and select from the menu System Update - Update from media. The prefix will update. After the installation is completed, the PS3 will turn off, now turn it on and check the software version - 3.55.

2. Install custom firmware 3.55 kmeaw.

Download custom firmware 3.55 kmeaw and run it. Specify the path to the flash drive, it will be installed. Connect the USB flash drive to the console. Now you need to completely de-energize the Playstation 3 (switch the toggle switch on the back - FAT models, to pull out the power cord - Slim models). Turn on the power of the console again. Press and hold the console power button until it turns on and turns off again (about 30 seconds). Press the button again and hold it until the set-top box emits a short beep twice. After the signal, release the button. Playstation will boot into recovery mode.
Connect the joystick with a wire, press the "PS" button and select "System Update". Playstation 3 will begin installing the kmeaw custom firmware.
After the console completes the update and reboots, two new items should appear in the “Game” menu: "Install package files"  and "/ App_home / PS3_GAME".

Installing the multiMAN manager to run games on custom firmware.

multiMAN is considered the best manager for running games on custom firmware.
Download multiMAN 2.03.00 and BDEMU Blu-ray drive emulator, copy the files to the root of your flash drive and connect it to the Playstation 3. Via the menu “Games” - “Install Package Files” On the console, set the joystick “X” first with multiMAN, then BDEMU. A drive emulator is necessary, because in the latest version the developer has removed the ability to run backups.

Games that you will download from torrents write to an external disk or USB flash drive. On the external disk in the root, create a folder «GAMEZ», and inside it a folder with the code of games.

Attention! In order to avoid errors at startup, check the correct sequence of folders, since when you add subsections of a directory to the game, the game will not start.

How to run the game on custom firmware

Go to the multiMAN manager and press the “X” button on the game - the image of the game is mounted and a new icon will appear in the “Game” menu: if any Blu-Ray disc is inserted into the console drive - the game will appear in the disc section, if there is no disc in the drive, / app_home / ps3_game).

Attention! Not all games go without a disc, some require the presence of any Blu-Ray disc in the drive box.

Downgrade on PS3 with firmware 3.56 - 4.46 (firmware rollback)

Downgrade (from English - downgrade)  - This is the use of old device software. Downgrade, as an operation with a device, is used to roll back the firmware due to the greater stability of the early firmware or the possibility of any manipulations with the device. Owners of PS3 with firmware 3.56-4.46 can use a special device - E3 Flasher (E3 Flasher), which can lower the console firmware, that is, make a downgrade. E3 Flasher is a special chip that is installed inside the console in order to be able to roll back to an earlier firmware version, respectively, in order to install a custom one.

Downgrade, as a rule, is made on custom firmware 3.55, since it is this firmware that has been completely hacked. After rolling back to an earlier version of the firmware, you can install the custom firmware Rogero 3.55 v.3.7 or (or Kmeaw 3.55 - instructions in this article).

Conditions under which PS3 downgrade is possible:

  • Date Code prefixes must not be higher than 1B (this means that the prefix must be made no later than 2 quarters of 2011). View Date Code can be on the back of the console. Suppose 9D and 0C are suitable, since the prefixes were released in Q4 2009 and Q3 2010, respectively. 1C, 1D - no longer fit (3, 4 quarters 2011). Also, your PS3's memory should be of type NOR, as indicated by the following model numbers: CECHH, CECHJ, CECHK, CECHL, CECHM, CECHP, CECHQ
  • The firmware of your console should be below 3.60.
  • Slim consoles with model number 3000 cannot be subject to downgrade.

Becoming the owner of a wonderful PlayStation console, most owners are thinking about how to flash a PS3 at home.

Why PlayStation owners are puzzled by such a question is easy to understand. The problem is that the console refuses to run unlicensed gaming applications.

And only custom PS3 firmware allows you to run any homebrew and other unlicensed content. Homebrew is a software or gaming product developed by enthusiastic programmers.

Many are not satisfied with the standard PS3 firmware, so they reflash their device

In addition, after the decoding, which also includes the PS3 firmware, it will be possible to launch copies of licensed games downloaded from the original discs from friends or from the torrent.

If you carefully read the instructions on how to install the firmware on the PS3, you can immediately notice several conditions, without which you can simply flash the PlayStation 3.

There are such models of PS3 prefixes that simply cannot be decoded by any of the available methods.

It is very important to determine whether your set-top box is subject to modernization, and only then proceed to practical actions.

What consoles are stitched

If your console has already acquired the status of "old woman", since it was released more than five years ago, you are lucky, you can make a jailbreak by upgrading the operating system to version 3.55.

Unfortunately, if the operating system was previously updated to the specified version on PlayStation 3, then the jailbreak will be simply impossible.

All new PlayStations are immediately accompanied by versions not lower than 3.55, so decoding requires more complex manipulations, including downgrade.

But even downgrade may not be implemented on every PlayStation. For this reason, initially you need to figure out which consoles can be subjected to downgrade, and which ones can not.

First try to determine the type of your console. Pick up your PlayStation, unwrap and see what is written on the sticker.

In particular, it is very important to clarify the date of manufacture of the console, it is indicated near the “datecode” parameter. It is also very important to clarify the parameter of the so-called CECH revision.

Considering the datecode, you can find the number and the next Latin letter. The figure indicates the year of release, and the letter helps to figure out in which quarter the PS3 prefix "saw the light" for the first time and went on sale.

For example, having a datecode of 10D, it can be argued that it was in the fourth quarter of 2010 that the prefix was released. The letter D occupies the fourth position in the alphabet, so we can safely say that we are talking about the fourth quarter.

The revision of the console may be indicated slightly differently. If the console has a FAT system, then five CECHH letters and two numbers indicating the region in which the console was manufactured will be indicated near the revision.

Since the region does not play any role for the firmware, you can pay attention only to the first five letters.

If SLIM or SuperSLIM is in your hands, then the revision will be displayed as four letters (CECH), four digits (year of release) and at the end of another letter indicating the parameters of the hard disk, which also do not play a role in determining whether to flash this console.

Now that you have successfully figured out which model of console you have, you can determine if you can flash it.

All consoles with the FAT system, accompanied by the inscription CECHH, you can flash and install custom firmware on them.

SLIM consoles with revision CECH - 20xx and CECH - 21xx are stitched. If revision CECH - 25xx has a datecode below 1A, the model can also be flashed.

Unfortunately, the SLIM console, which has a revision of CECH - 30xx, or the SuperSLIM console is not flashing.

Risks and disadvantages of firmware consoles

Proceed to decoding the PlayStation should only be when you receive the most complete information on how to carry out the process without accompanying errors and problems.

Of course, some experienced craftsmen may try to “revive” the PS3, but this will require great effort, so this service will not be cheap, you will have to fork out.

Unfortunately, even such resuscitative actions are not able to fully return to your “life” your PlayStation. The prefix will work, but it is hardly a long enough period.

Another risk is that, by flashing the PS3, the owner of the set-top box loses the right to official warranty service. Including after installing an unlicensed PlayStation firmware, it is banned, as a result of which the multiplayer will simply not be available over the network.

All this should be considered, weigh the degree of risk, only after that you should finally decide whether to perform a jailbreak or downgrade on your PS3.

Self-firmware firmware

It is easy to flash the prefix with custom firmware if you first study the algorithm of the procedure. By the way, custom firmware wins significantly before the jailbreak.

For the PS3 firmware, you will need an ordinary flash card or a portable hard disk, which you must first format into the FAT file system.

Installing the official software update

Making sure that the PS3 console version does not exceed 3.55, you can perform some manipulations to update the existing firmware.

Formatting the flash drive in advance, do not forget to create a folder on it, calling it "PS3", inside it - another one, but already under the name "UPDATE". It is very important that it be signed in capital letters.

Now download the archive containing the update files, unzip it, find the file responsible for the PS3UPDAT.PUP official update process, then move it to “UPDATE”.

Connect the USB flash drive to the PlayStation, find the “System Update” option, click on it, and then select the new “Update from media” option.

After turning off the console, start it again, go to the “Settings” main menu, select “System Settings”, and then go to the sub-item “System Information”. Now it will indicate that the console is accompanied by version 3.55.

Installing custom firmware

Wanting to install custom firmware, you need to initially find it on the network and download, of course, preferring only to trusted sources.

There are several variants of custom firmware that are popular, among them are Rogero 4.55 and 3.55 kmeaw.

Now unzip the downloaded version, rename the PS3UPDAT.PUP if necessary, and then move it to the “UPDATE” folder located on the USB flash drive, which should be similarly prepared as before the update.

Immediately after disconnecting, reconnect the power supply to the console. At this point, hold down the power button and do not let go; the set-top box should turn on itself and immediately turn itself off. Next, do exactly the same, hold down the power button and hold it until the console beeps twice.

After such a characteristic sound, release the power button to start the recovery mode.

Now, by connecting the joystick, you need to select the PS parameter, and then click on the “System Update” button. Now all the important actions are over, since the PlayStation 3 will continue to operate independently, the firmware will be installed automatically.

After the installation process is completed, the prefix will reboot. You can make sure that the custom firmware is installed by the presence of two items “Install package files” and “/ app_home / PS3_GAME”, which were not there before.

MultiMAN Manager Installation

By installing custom firmware, it is too early for you to celebrate the victory, since you were pursuing a slightly different goal - to launch non-licensed games, homebrew.

And you will succeed only after the installation of a special multiMAN manager.

Download the program itself by visiting specialized forums or websites, and then place the boot file on the USB flash drive.

Now, going into the “Games” menu, you need to find the “Install package files” item there, by clicking on which, specify the path to the multiMAN download file.

After the successful installation of the manager, download games from torrents that you would like to run on the console. Put them in the GAMEZ folder.

Now, by opening the multiMAN manager, you can find the desired game in it, click on the cross next to it, the image will be mounted, and the game will start. This completes the firmware process, and the user can enjoy the daily game.

So, the firmware process is completely uncomplicated, if you initially thoroughly prepare for it, and then follow the algorithm that was developed and presented by experienced users and programmers.

Already, the owners of the Sony PS3 are jubilant with delight, because now, you can absolutely and quickly, flash your gaming console and freely download and install games. Today, we will introduce you to the step-by-step actions of the PS3 firmware.

First, a little theory.

Jailbreak or simply - firmware, this is changing / unlocking the software shell of your console. After the firmware, your gaming console will be able to run games downloaded from the Internet without having a licensed disc, as well as install various applications written by craftsmen for ease of use of the console.

The history of the firmware:

December 29, 2010 a PS3 security breach was found
January 9, 2011 George Hotz (Geohot) posted the first of its kind custom firmware for the PS3, which allowed to run any software on the curling.
January 17, created and posted on the 3.55 Waninkoko CFW network
January 18, created and posted on the network 3.55 Wutangrza CFW
January 19, created and posted on the network 3.55 Kmeaw CFW
On January 27, the official 3.56 firmware was released
January 29, created and posted on the network 3.55 Waninkoko CFW version 2

What is required for console firmware:

1. Prefix, with firmware not higher than 3.55 (see below how you can check the firmware version of your console)

2. USB flash drive formatted with FAT32 file system

4. A little patience and care 🙂

How to check your firmware version?

Everything is very simple. To do this, follow these steps. Turn on the console and go to the menu " Settings"System""System Information"  - here you will see the version of your firmware (example: 3.41, 3.55, etc.).

ATTENTION! For the firmware of the console, you must have installed the official firmware 3.55

Ways to upgrade firmware.

There are 3 ways to update the firmware, consider each of them.

but) From a flash drive.  Download the firmware. Next, create a “PS3” folder on the flash drive and the “UPDATE” folder in it (the names of both folders need to be written in capital letters)and throw there the downloaded firmware.

ATTENTION! The firmware should be located approximately in the following path: H: /PS3/UPDATE/PS3UPDAT.PUP

b) From a flash drive, through the recovery (Recovery) menu. For a start, we prepare flash drives with firmware according to the instructions above (see paragraph “ but)“, Update from flash drives). Turn off the console. Lift your finger to the power button on the console and hold until the console turns on and off. We remove the finger and hold it down again by pressing the console enable button and wait until we hear a double “pip-peep” (in the process, the prefix will peep but with a large interval, you need to hold it until the double peak), then remove the finger. The console will ask to connect the game controller using a wire, which we should do.

Select the item - "Firmware Update" (it is the latest in the list) and wait for the end.

Video of the whole process:

c) Through the Internet from XMB. ATTENTION!With this method, the update will occur immediately on the latest firmware and if you need 3.55, then do not use this method!

Select custom firmware

At this stage, you will need to decide which custom firmware you will install for yourself. At the moment there are 4 versions of various firmware.

I want to note that the quality of each of the firmware, sometimes very different for each user, is precisely in this, your task is to choose the best option for your console!

ATTENTION! It is safer to flash the console in the recovery (revovery) menu (see above for a way to get into the menu recovery menu). Although many without any problems it turns out to carry out the necessary operations through XMB.

1. CFW from kmeaw.

This firmware is already with the built-in lv2.pkg (there is no need to install it separately, but you still have to run every time). Accordingly, there are no bricks.

Installing firmware:

  1.   If you have GEOHOT, then you can put it on top of it, without OFW.

Video instructions for installing firmware from kmeaw.

2. CFW from Geohot.

This firmware was the first. With it there is no likelihood of getting brik. Games are started from the internal hard disk using the previously found and installed pkg game file. This method allows you to run games without a disc in the drive! In recent versions, managers have the opportunity to run games without pkg and even from external disks!

Installing firmware:

  1. Upgraded to the original firmware 3.55. (3 ways described above)
  2. Downloading firmware from Geohota - HERE. And update the system with a flash drive.

3. CFW from Waninkoko.

The first firmware with the support of file managers! Also, it is possible to start games from an external hard drive.
But for a start, we look carefully what revisions of consoles are amenable to firmware!

You can see the revision number of your console on the back (bottom) cover. ATTENTION! After the revision number can still go tsiferki (for example CECHH08 - this is the same CECHH).

DO NOT slim the console:

Shave

  • CECHA = 256MB
  • CECHB = 256MB
  • CECHC = 256MB
  • CECHE = 256MB
  • CECHG = 256MB
  • CECHH = 16MB
  • CECHJ = 16MB
  • CECHK = 16MB
  • CECHL = 16MB
  • CECHM = 16MB
  • CECHP = 16MB
  • CECHQ = 16MB

Slim version:

  Successfully

  • CECH-20..A = 16MB
  • CECH-20..B = 16MB
  • CECH-21..A = 16MB
  • CECH-21..B = 16MB
  • CECH-250.A = 16MB
  • CECH-250.B = 16MB
  • CECH-251.A = 16MB
  • CECH-251.B = 16MB

Installing firmware:

  1. Install the original firmware 3.55 (OFW). If you have CFW 3.55, then do it through the recovery mod.
  2. Download firmware - HERE.
  3. Update via USB flash drive via XMB.

4. CFW from Waninkoko version 2

The new version of the firmware from VaniKokos. This time they promise no bricks. And the rest is pretty stable firmware! Based on Hermes’e seems to be like. The people respond very positively.

Installing firmware:

  1. Install the original firmware 3.55 (OFW). If you have CFW 3.55, then do it through the recovery mod. Some of the users put it directly on the first version through the menu recovery and everything works fine!
  2. Downloading the firmware - HERE.
  3. Update the finished firmware from a flash drive via XMB

ATTENTION! If the console constantly displays a message stating that the firmware version is the newest - flush through the recovery menu!

5. CFW from Wutangrza

There are no bricks on which it is rumored. In principle, for the average user, except for 0% of the Bric, the difference from "Waninkoko"  - not. The only thing is that the firmware itself will have to be assembled by the manual itself (see below).

Installing firmware:

  1. Install the original firmware 3.55 (OFW). If you have CFW 3.55, then do it through the recovery mod.
  2. Download the original firmware - HERE.
  3. Download patch Vutangi - HERE.
  4. Download the program called: "bsdiff" - HERE.
  5. We write the original firmware, patch and downloaded program in one folder - (for example C: \\ cfw)
  6. Open the command prompt - Windows (press Win + R and type cmd) and go to the created folder (command: cd c: \\ cfw)
  7. We execute the following command - “bspatch PS3UPDAT.PUP CFW.PUP Wutangrza-3.55.patch”
  8. Rename the file "CFW.PUP" to "PS3UPDAT.PUP" and update it with the prefix from the USB flash drive via XMB
  9. Install the firmware from Geohot’a - “ CFW from Geohot» (we described her second)
  10. Downloading the package: lv2 - HERE. And install it
  11. Install the file manager you need

Error codes:

80010009 — Rebuild original EBOOT and SFO hands.

80029567 — This error occurs when the PKG is signed for a specific firmware, and not for the one you are installing. Look for signed PKG or install another firmware.
