How to remove the speed limit of the Internet? How to limit the speed of the Internet via a Wi-Fi router? On an example of a router from TP-Link.

Internet speed can be controlled at the router or computer level. At that time, the speed can be limited by itself, you can also use tools to assign different parameters to individual programs and make many restrictions how many bandwidth   they use and how to prioritize. Built-in Parental Control can also set different limits on one account on one computer and provides additional parameters for blocking websites, limiting downloads and selecting which programs are acceptable for use.

Instructions

Install the Traffic-Shaping software

1. Select, download and install the traffic inspector program, such as NetBalancer, Traffic Shaper XP or NetLimiter for the computer for which you want to limit the speed or bandwidth.
  2. The download limit and download speed on the computer in general, or the priorities for using the available bandwidth first and how much they use. With some programming, you can install download and download limits for certain programs.

3. Save changes and make the necessary changes. You may have better test results at the peak hours, when any differences will be most noticeable.

Change router QoS settings

4.Get access to the router and control panel via the web browser of any computer connected to the router. This is usually done by entering the IP address of your router, which can be found either on the router itself or in its instruction manual.
5.Open QoS settings (Quality of Service), if your router has them in stock. Primary settings   you can change the Uplink and Downlink fields. After enabling QoS, enter the numbers below in these QoS fields until they become effective.
  6. Save changes, check the connection. You may need to change the fields several times to achieve the effect you desire.

Using Parental Controls

7.Open "Parental Control", then select the Account account that you want to limit. If you do not have the Family Safety service enabled for this account, however, do this by opening and editing their account settings.
8.Open the "Web Filtering" options "Timing" and "App Restrictions." While you can not control the speed in particular, you can control which applications can be used, which ones can be downloaded and how much time a user can spend on the Internet.
9.Save the user settings and apply to other users as needed.

  • Using parental control, you need to make sure that no one is short of bandwidth by distributing user time that can be ONLINE throughout the day. Thus, each user gets to use your connection with the bandwidth of unhindered access by other users.
  • Not all routers will have QoS settings that you can change. If you do not, you can install third-party firmware that perform similar functions.
  • Before changing any settings of the router, make sure that the current settings are saved, in case you need to return them back.
  • Installing the firmware for your router may break it or render it unusable, so be very careful.

It is not uncommon for a single person to be connected to the Internet at the same time by several people. For example, this is often the case with shared home access. Because of this, sometimes you have to deal with the natural consequence - the problem of low speed.

In practice, everything looks like this. Suppose that there are two computers that use the same connection at the same time. If you do not make changes to the algorithm of the local router (if any), programs or operating system, then almost all available resources of the channel are received by the computer that creates more requests and / or initializes them first. In simple language, if someone at home includes uploading a file using a torrent client, the other user at best can be content with reading texts and checking mail. But if you enter that problem, you can easily solve it. And quickly and simply. In addition, understanding how to limit the speed of the Internet, it is possible to organize traffic distribution to multiple users, while saving on the services of the provider. That's how knowledge can make a profit.

How to limit the speed of the Internet

So, there are two ways to manage traffic: software and hardware. And the first is divided into two groups: the built-in operating system and using third-party applications. Both the first and the second method allow you to limit the speed of the Internet, but they have a number of characteristic features. So, the hardware almost does not depend on the computing capabilities of the components of the computer and can work effectively even with older systems. But the second is more flexible in setting up and relatively cheap (although this is not the rule). The choice depends on the user's requirements, ability to work with devices / programs and financial capabilities. By the way, Internet traffic accounting is easy to configure in both cases.

Hardware method

To implement it, you need a special device - a router. Prices for budget models start from $ 10-15, which makes them an interesting offer. If there are few users, it makes sense on each computer to register a unique IP-address. After you need to go to its settings (the address for the browser is specified in the instruction or on the label) and in the list choose "DHCP - Address reservation". Here you need to add each computer by specifying unique MAC and IP addresses (you can see in the properties After rebooting the router, you should check the "DHCP client list" - all computers should be visible.) To now limit the Internet speed for each IP address, you need to proceed to "Control bandwidth - List of rules. "Here you need to add an address and register the uploads and returns.

It is also recommended to configure the MAC address filtering in the wireless section, which will secure the connection from getting full speed by any user who, on his part, has changed the ID of the network card.

Software method

In this case, preference should be given to specialized programs (rather than built-in Windows solutions like QoS). You can install the local HandyCache proxy server and specify a restriction in it. The disadvantage is that you will have to configure the network in such a way that other computers can access through one - the main one on which the proxy is installed. Also very well known is the Traffic Shaper XP program. It allows you to set speed limits. Once configured on each computer, you can start using a single connection.

Sometimes there is a need to limit the speed of the Internet connection to home computer. Often this is necessary when several machines are combined into a local network. To make both machines roughly the same in their work on the network, you need to change the Internet settings. Their change is made either on the router itself (the dispenser) or with the use of special programs.

It should be taken into account that changing the settings of the router is a rather difficult task. When an inexperienced person intervenes, this can lead to undesirable consequences, device malfunctions, so it is easier to apply special programs that allow you to manage traffic in local Area Networks.

So, let's figure out how to limit the speed of the Internet on your computer in a simple and affordable way.

The most popular software products

Such programs are often called traffic inspectors:

  • BWMeter
  • NetBalancer
  • SoftPerfect Bandwidth Manager
  • Traffic Shaper XP
  • NetLimiter
  • Tmeter

And the last software can be found on the network absolutely free of charge. So, download the program you selected (paid or not) on the network. Unzip and install it on your computer. Then carefully read its admin panel, activate the menu.

Algorithm of actions for speed limitation

  • Use IP address filtering. To do this, start one of the programs mentioned above.
  • Alternately open the following items: "configuration", "filter set".
  • Click on the "change" button, this will lead to a complete modification of the settings file.

  • Simulate a new customized file by clicking on the "add" button.
  • Again go back to the settings, put a "tick" against the item "master filter".
  • Find the item "enable speed limit", select the required speed (for example, 5Mbps) and also put a "tick".

For correct operation   computer and Internet, it is necessary to pay attention to a number of other parameters. For example, there is an option "A certain amount of traffic consumed". When a certain parameter is reached, access to the Internet is blocked or the speed is reduced to a minimum.

Remember that it is best to entrust the operation to a person familiar with computer technology. An incompetent person can cause significant harm to your computer, make it difficult to access the Internet, and "drop" the settings, which will cause the device to malfunction.

If you decide to cope with this task yourself, carefully read the instruction manual and the video in advance. If you have sufficient knowledge, try to enter the internal settings of your router and there already set the appropriate restrictions on the speed of Internet access on a particular machine.

The speed of the Internet depends on how busy the service provider channel is. Therefore, many are interested in how to limit the speed of the Internet to ensure the most efficient allocation of resources. This will allow several users to connect to one device, while providing them with the necessary required bandwidth and, correspondingly, speed. You can influence speed by slowing or speeding it up. To do this, use the toolkit that will help reduce the amount of traffic consumed. An example of such a software product   is Tmeter.

Initial Actions

If you do not know how to limit the speed of the Internet with of this product, then we can help. To reduce traffic consumption, you need to use IP address filtering. To find all IP addresses (for assigning them certain filters), you need to enable software   Tmeter. In the main menu of this program, you need to find and open menu items such as "Configuration" and "Filter Set". Then click the "Edit" button, which allows you to edit the files, then create a new settings file. To do this, click on the "Master Filter" line in the settings. After that, mark the "Speed limit" menu and set the required value there.

Optional speed limit

How to limit the speed of the Internet, in addition to entering its value? There are some options that can also limit traffic. For example, there is an option "Size of consumed traffic", that is, when a certain amount of traffic is reached, Internet access is automatically blocked. But this option has disadvantages. Network monitoring should check the computers on the network and all the actions that are done in them. In addition, at the moment when the host computer does not work or it is turned off, the network control settings will be violated. For this reason, programmers propose to limit the speed of the Internet on the computer with the settings of the router, and then you can connect and special programs.

Speed limit with a router

How to limit the speed of the Internet for all devices that work through routers? An example is the TP-Link router. These speed limiting devices use IP addresses. This is the responsibility of the DHCP service. To check if it works, you need to enter the address: 192.168.0.1 or 192.168.1.1, which is the address for testing connections, then a login and password request will appear to enter the settings. Login and password: admin. In the settings, go to the DHCP tab. If there is an "Enabled" there, then the service is turned on. In the settings of this type of router there is a menu that is responsible for setting the Bandwidth Control speed limit. You need to go into it and select the type of connection in the Line Type section. In the Egress Bandwidth field, specify the highest outbound rate (it is better to specify the one that is given by the provider). In the next Ingress Bandwidth field, the maximum incoming rate. In order to limit the speed of the Internet on the computer, the Protocol menu selects a restriction for a particular protocol.

Hello dear friends! Today I would like to tell you, via WiFi or in a local network for computers via a router.

It can take in different situations, for example, my friend lives in a hostel, he is connected wired Internet, and he manages through the router to give WiFi to the hostel is not free!

He has his own list of customers, and they pay him a monthly fee for using wireless internet   as a provider.

To ensure that users do not overload the channel, and I could most comfortably use the Internet, I helped him adjust the download speed limit for other computers.

It is installed WiFi router   Tp-Link WR841ND, with function support Bandwidth Control   (shaper), responsible for traffic distribution. Just on it, I made the setting, of which I will describe below.

By the way, almost everything modern routers   firms TP-Link   support this option, and the firmware interface for all models is similar, so do not worry if you have another modelka, just follow the instructions and everything will turn out.

Internet speed control for all computers

So, the first thing to consider is setting the speed limit for all computers connected to the router by wireless network   either locally.

I want to note that it is desirable to be set up to be included DHCP Dynamic IP address assignment service for devices. Usually, it is turned on by default, but still it will not be superfluous to check. Go to the settings of the router through the browser, type in the address bar 192.168.0.1   or 192.168.1.1 . A pop-up window will appear where you need to enter your login and password, usually admin   and admin   if you did not change anything.

Go to the menu tab DHCP, where opposite DHCP server   must be checked Enable.

Put a tick opposite Enable bandwidth monitoring.

Type of line in my case I chose Other, if you have ADSL, then indicate this option.

In the field Outgoing and Inbound Bandwidth   Enter the maximum values that are appropriate for your tariff plan. If you do not know, please contact your provider. If I have 100 Mbps, then I enter 102400 Kbps.

After saving the changes, open the tab - List of rules   and click Add a new one.

Put a tick opposite Enable.

In the field Range of IP-addresses   enter the address range as in the settings DHCP, which will allow us to monitor all connected devices. Range of ports   we will miss, Protocol   we will leave All .

Further, we indicate in the fields Outgoing Bandwidth   minimum and maximum outgoing speed (this is when you upload your files to the Internet). For example, I set a limit of 5 Mbit / s. Therefore, in the minimum set to 0, and in the maximum we enter 5120 Kbit / s (5 * 1024 = 5120).

In the Fields Incoming bandwidth   (when you download files from the Internet), I registered the same.

Now all devices with IP addresses from 192.168.0.100 to 192.168.0.199 connected to the router will be assigned a speed of 5 Mb / s. If you need to remove or change this restriction in the future, click the links Edit   or Remove.

Now it remains to reboot the router, so that the settings take effect, go to the tab System Tools   -. After a reboot, make sure that this restriction is working.

Limit traffic speed for individual devices

The limitation for individual devices is set by IP   address, and before that you need to bind this address to the MAC address of the desired device. For example, to the MAC address of the user's computer "H" I made an IP binding 192.168.0.129 , therefore this PC will always receive only these digits from the router when turned on.

Linking the IP address to the MAC address

So, we go in DHCPReservation of addresses   and press the button Add a new one .

In field MAC Address   enter the desired value. In field Reserved IP address enter the corresponding IP address. condition   - leave it on. Click the button Save.

Where can I get the MAC address of the desired computer?

If this computer or other device is connected to our router, go to the tab DHCP   -, where all connected clients to the router will be displayed. Select the desired one.

After the performed operation it is necessary to make reboot the router. Click the System Tools – .

When the hardware reboots, go back to the DHCP   - and check if the IP is tied to the desired device.

Then open the tab we already know Bandwidth controlList of rules   and press Add a new one .

Put the opposite Enable   tick, in the first field Range of addresses   enter the desired IP address, Range of ports   and Protocol   leave unchanged.

In field Outgoing Bandwidth   enter the desired outgoing speed (when we upload files to the Internet).

In field Incoming bandwidth   enter the desired incoming speed (when we download files from the Internet). In both cases, I entered the maximum 5 Mbit / s (5 * 1024 = 5120 Kbit / s). Click the button Save   when you finish the setting.

If there are any errors when saving, check to see if you have any other rules. They can conflict with each other. Just delete the previously created one.

In the event that everything went well, a rule will be created that will limit the speed to 5 Mb / s for one device with IP 192.168.0.129.

When there are many devices, create for each such rule, the parameters can be different everywhere.

Protection in case the client changes the MAC address

Now we know how to reduce the speed of the Internet   for individual devices, but if one of the clients changes the MAC address, then it will bypass the speed limit. Whatever happens, you can install a filter on the MAC address, thanks to which, if the client decides to cheat from him, the Internet will be completely lost.

This method will be a little inconvenient for those who constantly connect different devices   to the router, what would the Internet have earned on them, you will need to add their MAC addresses to the whitelist.

Yes, and use this option should, I think, not always. For example, somewhere in the office it will do better than ever, but for home, I think that it will be superfluous.

Click the Wireless Mode   - and press Add a new one .

First of all, add the address of the computer from which you configure, or you block yourself!

In field MAC Address   enter the relevant data in the field Description   enter a short name for the tag, Status   put Enabled. Then click Save .

Now you need to check the Allow stations listed in the included records to access   then click on the button Enable    to activate the filter.

After making the settings, access to the Internet will have only one PC, to add other devices, computers, laptops, smartphones, click Add a new one   and repeat the above operation to add devices.

The list of MAC addresses can be checked on the menu tab DHCP – .

Be very careful, follow strictly instructions, and even yourself can be blocked and access to settings lose. Then you have to do a system reset of the settings.

To disable the MAC address filter, on the Wireless Mode   - click on the button Disable    opposite the inscription MAC Address Filtering.

If you do not know how through a laptop to distribute WiFi, read.

Well, that's all, dear friends, now you know how to limit the speed of the Internet   through a router. If you have any questions, ask in the comments, I'll try to help!
